¹യെരൂശലേമിലെ രാജാവായി ദാവീദിന്റെ മകനായ സഭാപ്രസംഗിയുടെ വചനങ്ങള്‍.

¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

²ഹാ മായ, മായ എന്നു സഭാപ്രസംഗി പറയുന്നു; ഹാ മായ, മായ, സകലവും മായയത്രേ.

²“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

³സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില്‍ പ്രയത്നിക്കുന്ന സകലപ്രയത്നത്താലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

³What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

⁴ഒരു തലമുറ പോകുന്നു; മറ്റൊരു തലമുറ വരുന്നു;

⁴One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

⁵ഭൂമിയോ എന്നേക്കും നിലക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന്‍ ഉദിക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന്‍ അസ്തമിക്കുന്നു; ഉദിച്ച സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു തന്നേ ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ചെല്ലുന്നു.

⁵The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

⁶കാറ്റു തെക്കോട്ടു ചെന്നു വടക്കോട്ടു ചുറ്റിവരുന്നു; അങ്ങനെ കാറ്റു ചുറ്റിച്ചുറ്റി തിരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു പരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

⁶The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

⁷സകലനദികളും സമുദ്രത്തിലേക്കു ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്നു; എന്നിട്ടും സമുദ്രം നിറയുന്നില്ല; നദികള്‍ ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്ന ഇടത്തേക്കു പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും ചെല്ലുന്നു.

⁷All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

⁸സകലകാര്യങ്ങളും ശ്രമാവഹങ്ങളാകുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന്‍ പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ തീരുകയില്ല; കണ്ടിട്ടു കണ്ണിന്നു തൃപ്തി വരുന്നില്ല; കേട്ടിട്ടു ചെവി നിറയുന്നതുമില്ല.

⁸All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁹ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതു ഉണ്ടാകുവാനുള്ളതും, ചെയ്തുകഴിഞ്ഞതു ചെയ്‍വാനുള്ളതും ആകുന്നു; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില്‍ പുതുതായി യാതൊന്നും ഇല്ല.

⁹That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

¹⁰ഇതു പുതിയതു എന്നു പറയത്തക്കവണ്ണം വല്ലതും ഉണ്ടോ? നമുക്കു മുമ്പെ, പണ്ടത്തെ കാലത്തു തന്നേ അതുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

¹⁰Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new?” It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

¹¹പുരാതന ജനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു ഔര്‍മ്മയില്ലല്ലോ; വരുവാനുള്ളവരെക്കുറിച്ചു പിന്നത്തേതില്‍ വരുവാനുള്ളവര്‍ക്കും ഔര്‍മ്മയുണ്ടാകയില്ല.

¹¹There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

¹²സഭാപ്രസംഗിയായ ഞാന്‍ യെരൂശലേമില്‍ യിസ്രായേലിന്നു രാജാവായിരുന്നു.

¹²I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹³ആകാശത്തിന്‍ കീഴില്‍ സംഭവിക്കുന്നതൊക്കെയും ജ്ഞാനത്തോടെ ആരാഞ്ഞറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതു ദൈവം മനുഷ്യര്‍ക്കും കഷ്ടപ്പെടുവാന്‍ കൊടുത്ത വല്ലാത്ത കഷ്ടപ്പാടു തന്നേ.

¹³I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

¹⁴സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന സകല പ്രവൃത്തികളും ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടു; അവയൊക്കെയും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹⁵വളവുള്ളതു നേരെ ആക്കുവാന്‍ വഹിയാ; കുറവുള്ളതു എണ്ണിത്തികെപ്പാനും വഹിയാ.

¹⁵That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

¹⁶ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ ആലോചിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞതുയെരൂശലേമില്‍ എനിക്കു മുമ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരെക്കാളും അധികം ജ്ഞാനം ഞാന്‍ സമ്പാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; എന്റെ ഹൃദയം ജ്ഞാനവും അറിവും ധാരാളം പ്രാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

¹⁶I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

¹⁷ജ്ഞാനം ഗ്രഹിപ്പാനും ഭ്രാന്തും ഭോഷത്വവും അറിവാനും ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നമെന്നു കണ്ടു.

¹⁷I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

¹⁸ജ്ഞാനബാഹുല്യത്തില്‍ വ്യസനബാഹുല്യം ഉണ്ടു; അറിവു വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നവന്‍ ദുഃഖവും വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
