¹“इतर राष्ट्रांच्या मालकीचा प्रदेश तुमचा देव परमेश्वर तुम्हाला देत आहे. परमेश्वर त्या राष्ट्रांना नष्ट करेल. मग त्यांच्या जागी तुम्ही वस्ती कराल. त्यांची नगरे आणि घरे तुम्ही ताब्यात घ्याल. तेव्हा

¹When Yahweh your God shall cut off the nations, whose land Yahweh your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;

²you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

³[This verse may not be a part of this translation]

³You shall prepare you the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there.

⁴“मनुष्यवध करुन या तीनपैकी एका नगरात आश्रयाला येणाऱ्याबद्दल नियम असा: पूर्वीचे वैर नसताना ज्याच्या हातून चुकून आपल्या शेजाऱ्याचा वध झाला आहे त्याने येथे जावे.

⁴This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past;

⁵उदाहरणार्थ, दोन माणसे लाकडे तोडायला जंगलात गेली. तेथे झाडावर कुऱ्हाड चालवत असताना चूकून कुऱ्हाडीचे पाते दांड्यापासून निसटले आणि ते नेमके दुसऱ्यावर पडून तो मेला. अशावेळी कुऱ्हाड चालवणाऱ्याने या तीनपैकी एखाद्या नगराच्या आश्रयाला जाऊन आपले प्राण वाचवावे.

⁵as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to chop wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live:

⁶हे नगर फार दूर असेल तर त्याला तेथपर्यंत पोचता येणार नाही. मृताचा जवळचा नातेवाईक त्याचा पाठलाग करील व त्याला त्या नगरात पोचण्यापूर्वीच गाठेल. आणि रागाच्या भरात त्याचा वध करील. यास्तव मुळात त्या माणसाच्या हातून वैर नसताना मनुष्य हत्या झाली होती तेव्हा तो प्राणदंडाला पात्र नव्हता.

⁶lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he didn’t hate him in time past.

⁷म्हणून ही नगरे सर्वांना जवळ पडायला हवीत. तेव्हा अशी तीन नगरे राखून ठेवा.

⁷Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourselves.

⁸“तुमच्या प्रदेशाचा विस्तार करण्याचे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याने तुमच्या वाडवडिलांना वचन दिले होते. त्यांच्याजवळ कबूल केलेला सर्वप्रदेश तो तुम्हांला देईल.

⁸If Yahweh your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers;

⁹9तुमचाच देव परमेश्वर ह्याजवर प्रेम करा व त्याने दाखवलेल्या जीवनमार्गाने जा. या मी दिलेल्या आज्ञा तुम्ही पूर्णपणे पाळल्यात तर तुम्हाला हे सर्व मिळेल. मग परमेश्वराने तुमच्या प्रदेशाचा विस्तार केला की तुम्ही पहिल्या तीन नगरांच्या भरीला आश्रयासाठी आणखी तीन नगरे निवडा.

⁹if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, besides these three:

¹⁰म्हणजे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर तुम्हाला देणार असलेल्या भूमीवर निर्दोष माणसांची हत्या होणार नाही आणि अशा हत्येचे पाप तुम्हांला लागणार नाही.

¹⁰that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you.

¹¹“पण द्वेषापोटीही एखादा माणूस संधीची वाट पाहात लपून छपून दुसऱ्याच्या जिवावर उठेल, त्याच्यावर प्राणघातक हल्ला करुन या नगरात आश्रयाला येईल.

¹¹But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises up against him, and strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities;

¹²अशावेळी त्याच्या नगरातील वडिलधाऱ्यांनी माणसे पाठवून त्याला तेथून बाहेर काढावे व मृताच्या आप्तांच्यां हवाली करावे. त्याला मृत्यूची सजा झाली पाहिजे.

¹²then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

¹³त्याच्याबद्दल कळवळा वाटू देऊ नका. कारण त्याने निरपराध माणासाचा खून केला आहे. इस्राएलमधून हा कलंक दूर करा. मग सर्व काही ठीक होईल.

¹³Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

¹⁴“शेजाऱ्याच्या जमिनीची हद्द दाखवणारे दगड दूर करु नका. पूर्वीच्या लोकांनी त्या सीमा आखलेल्या आहेत. हे दगड म्हणजे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याने तुमच्या वाट्याला जेवढी जमीन दिली त्याच्या खुणा होत.

¹⁴You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

¹⁵“नियमाविरुद्ध वागल्याचा, अपराधाचा आरोप कुणावर असेल तर त्याला दोषी ठरवायला एक साक्षीदार पुरेसा नाही. त्याने खरेच गुन्हा केला आहे हे ठरवायला दोन किंवा तीन साक्षीदार तरी हवेतच.

¹⁵One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.

¹⁶“अमक्याच्या हातून अपराध घडला आहे असे एखादा साक्षीदार द्वेषबुद्धीने, मुद्दाम खोटे सांगू शकतो.

¹⁶If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,

¹⁷अशावेळी त्या दोघांनी परमेश्वराच्या पवित्र निवासस्थानी जावे आणि तेथे जे याजक व न्यायाधीश त्यावेळी असतील त्यांनी निवाडा करावा.

¹⁷then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;

¹⁸न्यायाधीशांनी कौशल्याने चौकशी केली पाहिजे. त्यातून साक्षीदाराचा खोटारडेपणा उघडकीला आला तर

¹⁸and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother;

¹⁹मग तुम्ही त्याला शिक्षा करा. तथाकथित अपराध्याला जे शासन व्हावे असे त्याला वाटत होते तेच याला करा. अशा रीतीने आपल्यामधून नीच वृत्तीचा नायनाट करा.

¹⁹then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.

²⁰इतरांच्या कानावर हे गेले की त्यांनाही दहशत बसेल आणि असे प्रकार करायला ते धजावणार नाहीत.

²⁰Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of you.

²¹“गुन्हा जितका गंभीर स्वरुपाचा तितकीच शिक्षाही कडक असावी. अपराध्याला शासन करताना दया दाखवण्याचे कारण नाही. कोणी कोणाचा जीव घेतल्यास त्यालाही देहांताचे शासन द्यावे. डोळ्याबद्दल डोळा, दाताबद्दल दात, हाताच्या बदल्यात हात आणि पायाच्या बदल्यात पाय असा दंड करावा.

²¹Your eyes shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
