¹“तुम्ही शत्रूवर चाल करुन जाल तेव्हा त्यांचे घोडे, रथ आणि तुमच्यापेक्षा मोठे सैन्य पाहून घाबरुन जाऊ नका. कारण ज्याने तुम्हाला मिसरमधून बाहेर काढले तो परमेश्वर देव तुमचा पाठीराखा आहे.

¹When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

²“तुम्ही युद्धावर जाल तेव्हा तुमच्या याजकाने आपल्या सैन्याशी बातचीत करावी.

²It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

³ती अशी, ‘इस्राएल लोकहो, ऐका. तुम्ही आज शत्रूवर चाल करुन जात आहात. तेव्हा आपले धैर्य गमावू नका. भयभीत होऊ नका. उभारी कायम ठेवा. शत्रूला घाबरु नका.

³and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

⁴कारण तुम्हाला देव परमेश्वर ह्याची साथ आहे. शत्रू विरुद्ध लढाई करायला तसेच विजय मिळवायला तो तुम्हाला मदत करणारा आहे.’

⁴for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

⁵“मग लेवी अधिकाऱ्यांनी सैन्याला उद्धेशून असे सांगावे, ‘नवीनघर बांधून अजून गृह प्रवेश केला नाही असा कोणी तुमच्यात आहे का? त्याने परत जावे. कारण तो युद्धात प्राणाला मुकल्यास दुसरा कोणी गृहप्रवेश करील.

⁵The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

⁶द्राक्षमळा लावून अजून त्याची तोडणी केली नाही, फळ चाखले नाही असा कोणी आहे काय? त्याने माघारी जावे कारण तो युद्धात मरण पावल्यास दुसराच कोणी त्याच्या मळ्यातील फळे खाईल.

⁶What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.

⁷तसेच, वाडग निश्चय होऊन अजून लग्न झालेले नाही असा कोणी असल्यास त्याने परत जावे. कारण तो युद्धात कामी आल्यास त्याच्या वाग्दत्त वधूशी दुसरा कोणी लग्न करील.’

⁷What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”

⁸“त्या लेवी अधिकाऱ्यांनी पुढे हेही सांगावे की युद्धाच्या भीतीने कोणी गलितगात्र झालेला असल्यास त्याने घरी परत जावे. नाहीतर त्याच्यामुळे इतरांचेही अवसान गळेल.

⁸The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”

⁹अशाप्रकारे सैन्याशी संभाषण केल्यानंतर अधिकाऱ्यांनी सेनापतींची नेमणूक करावी.

⁹It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.

¹⁰“तुम्ही एखाद्या नगरावर चाल करुन जाल तेव्हा प्रथम शांततेच्या तहाची बोलणी करुन पाहा.

¹⁰When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

¹¹त्यांनी तुमच्या बोलण्याला मान्यता देऊन नगराचे दरवाजे उघडले तर तेथील सर्व प्रजा तुमची गुलाम होईल व तुमची सेवाचाकरी करील.

¹¹It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.

¹²पण त्यांनी तुमची तहाची बोलणी फेटाळून लावली आणि ते युद्धाला सज्ज झाले तर मग नगराला वेढा घाला.

¹²If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:

¹³आणि तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ते तुमच्या हाती देईल तेव्हा तेथील सर्व पुरुषांना ठार करा.

¹³and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:

¹⁴पण तेथील बायका, मुले, गुरेढोरे इत्यादी लूट स्वत:साठी घ्या. तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याने दिलेल्या या लुटीचा उपभोग घ्या.

¹⁴but the women, and the little ones, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.

¹⁵तुमच्यापासून फार लांब असणाऱ्या व तुमच्या प्रदेशाबाहेर असणाऱ्या नगरांबाबत असे करण्यात यावे.

¹⁵Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

¹⁶“पण तुमचा देव परमेश्वर तुम्हाला देणार असलेल्या प्रदेशातील नगरे तुम्ही ताब्यात घ्याल तेव्हा तिथे मात्र कोणालाही जिवंत ठेवू नका.

¹⁶But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

¹⁷हत्ती, अमोरी, कनानी, परिज्जी, हिव्वी, यबूसी अशा एकूण एक सर्वांचा तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याच्या आज्ञेप्रमाणे समूळ नाश करा.

¹⁷but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;

¹⁸नाहीतर आपापल्या दैवतांची पूजा करताना ते ज्या अमंगळ गोष्टी करतात त्या ते तुम्हाला शिकवतील आणि तसे करणे आपला देव परमेश्वर ह्याच्या दृष्टीने पाप आहे.

¹⁸that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.

¹⁹“युद्धात एखाद्या नगराला तुम्ही फार काळ वेढा घालून राहिलात तर तेथील फळझाडांवर कुऱ्हाड चालवू नका. त्यांची फळे अवश्य खा पण झाडे तोडू नका. त्यांच्याशी युद्ध पुकारायला ती झाडे काही तुमची शत्रू नाहीत.

¹⁹When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?

²⁰पण ज्यांना फळ येत नाहीत ती झाडे तोडलीत तरी चालतील. युद्ध चालू असेपर्यंत युद्धासाठी लागणारी शस्त्र बनवायला त्या लाकडाचा उपयोग हवा तर करा.

²⁰Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.
