1माझ्या बंधूंनो, तुमच्यापैकी पुष्कळजण शिक्षक होऊ पाहत नाहीत काय? तुम्हांला माहीत आहे की, जे आपण शिक्षक आहोत त्या आपला काटेकोरपणे न्याय होईल.
1Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.
2मी तुम्हाला सावध करीत आहे, कारण आपण पुष्कळ पापे करतो आणि जर कोणी त्याच्या बोलण्यात चुका करीत नाही तर तो परिपूर्ण मनुष्य आहे.
2For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
3आपण घोड्यांच्या तोंडांना लगाम घालतो यासाठी की, त्यांनी आपल्या आज्ञा पाळाव्यात. आणि अशा प्रकारे आपण त्यांचे संपूर्ण शरीर नियंत्रणात ठेऊ शकतो.
3Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.
4किंवा जहाजाचे उदाहरण घ्या. जरी ते खूप मोठे असले व जोरदार वाऱ्यामुळे चालविले जाते तरी ते लहान सुकाणूद्वारे ताब्यात ठेवता येते व सुकाणूधर नावाड्याच्या इच्छेला येईल तिकडे नेता येते.
4Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.
5त्याचप्रकारे जीभ ही शरीराचा लहानसा भाग आहे, पण ती मोठमोठ्या गोष्टी केल्याची बढाई मारते. फक्त विचार करा, कितीतरी मोठे जंगल लहानशा आगीन पेट घेते!
5So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!
6होय, जीभ ही ज्वाला आहे. आपल्या शरीराच्या सर्व अवयवामध्ये वाईट गोष्टींची ती खाणच आहे. जीभ ही आपल्या सर्व शरीराला विटाळविणारी आहे. ती आपल्याला अपवित्र करते. आपल्या सर्व अस्तित्वालाच ती आग लावते. ती तरकाच्या ज्वालांनी जीवन पेटवते.
6And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. or, Hell
7पशू, पक्षी, सरपटणारे जीवजंतु, साप आणि समुद्रातील निरनिरा या जातीचे जीव माणूस पाळू शकतो आणि प्रत्यक्षात त्याने तसे केले आहे.
7For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.
8पण कोणताही मनुष्य आपली जीभ ताब्यात ठेवू शकत नाही. ती फार चंचल, भयंकर, हिंस्र, दुराचारी आणि जहाल विषाने भरलेली असते.
8But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9आपला प्रभु आणि स्वर्गीय पिता याची स्तुति आपण आपल्या जिभेने करतो आणि जे मानव देवाच्या प्रतिमेचे बनविलेले आहेत, त्यांना जिभेने शापही देतो!
9With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
10एकाच तोंडातून आशीर्वाद निघतात व शापही निघतात. माझ्या बंधूंनो, हे असे असू नये.
10Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11एकाच झऱ्यातून गोड व कडू पाणी येऊ शकत नाही.
11Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?
12माझ्या बंधूंनो, अंजिराच्या झाडाला जैतुनाची फळे येतील काय? किंवा द्राक्षवेलीला अंजिर लागतील काय? कधीच नाही. तसेच खारट पाण्याच्या झऱ्यातून गोड पाणी येऊ शकणार नाही.
12Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.
13तुमच्यामध्ये कोण शहाणा व ज्ञानाने भरलेला आहे? त्याने त्याचे शहाणपण त्याच्या चांगल्या वागणुकीने दाखवावे. नम्रतेने केल्या जाणाऱ्या कृतीद्वारे त्याने आपले शहाणपण दाखवावे.
13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.
14पण जर तुमच्या ह्रदयात कटूरता, मत्सर व स्वार्थी उद्देश असतील तर तुम्ही तुमच्या शहाणपणाची फुशारकी मारू शकणार नाही. कारण तसे करणे म्हणजे खोटेपणाच्या आड सत्य लपविण्यासारखे आहे.
14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.
15कारण अशा प्रकारचे शहाणपण वरून, स्वर्गातून आलेले नाही, तर ते पृथ्वीवरचे आहे. अधार्मिक आणि सैतानी आहे.
15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
16कारण जेथे मत्सर व स्वार्थी ध्येये आढळतात तेथे अव्यवस्थितपणा व सर्व प्रकारचे वाईट व्यवहारही आढळतात.
16For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
17पण वरून लाभलेले शहाणपण मुळात शुद्ध, शातिदायक, समजूतदारपणाचे आणि मनमोकळे असून ते दयेचे व चांगली कामे यांना उत्तेजन देणारे असते. तसेच ते पक्षपात न करणारे व कळकळीचे असते.
17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18जे लोक शांततेच्या मार्गाने शांति स्थापन करण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात त्यांना सरळ, नीतिपूर्ण वागण्यामुळे मिळणाऱ्या चांगल्या गोष्टींचा लाभ होतो.
18Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
