¹ही याकोहचा मुलगा अगूर याची नीतिसूत्रे आहेत. हा त्याचा इथिएल आणि युकाल यांना निरोप आहे.

¹The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the oracle: the man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:

²मी पृथ्वीवरचा सगळ्यात वाईट माणूस आहे, मी जितके समजून घ्यायला हवे होते तितके मी समजू शकत नाही.

²“Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don’t have a man’s understanding.

³मी शहाणा व्हायला शिकलो नाही, आणि मला देवाबद्दल काहीही माहीत नाही.

³I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.

⁴स्वार्गातल्या गोष्टीबद्दल आजपर्यंत कोणीही काहीही शिकला नाही. कोणीही वाऱ्याला कधी हातात पकडू शकला नाही. कोणीही पाण्याला कपड्यात पकडू शकला नाही. पृथ्वीच्या सीमा कोणालाही माहीत नाहीत. जर कोणी ह्या गोष्टी करु शकला तर तो कोण असेल? त्याचे कुटुंब कुठे असेल.?

⁴Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?

⁵देवाने म्हटलेला प्रत्येक शब्द परिपूर्ण असतो. जे लोक देवाकडे जातात त्यांच्यासाठी देव म्हणजे एक सुरक्षित जागा असते.

⁵“Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

⁶म्हणून देव ज्या गोष्टी सांगतो त्या बदलण्याचा प्रयत्न करु नका. तुम्ही जर तसे केलेत तर तो तुम्हाला शिक्षा करेल आणि तुम्ही खोटे बोलता हे सिध्द करेल.

⁶Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.

⁷देवा मी मरण्यासाठी तुला दोन गोष्टी करायला सांगणार आहे.

⁷“Two things I have asked of you; don’t deny me before I die:

⁸खोटे न बोलण्यासाठी मला मदत कर आणि मला खूप श्रीमंत वा खूप गरीब करु नकोस. मला रोज लागणाऱ्या गोष्टीच फक्त दे.

⁸Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me;

⁹माझ्याकडे जर गरजेपेक्षा जास्त असेल तर तुझी मला गरज नाही असे मला वाटायला लागेल. पण मी जर गरीब असलो तर मी कदाचित् चोरी करेन. त्यामुळे मी देवाच्या नावाला लाज आणेन.

⁹lest I be full, deny you, and say, ‘Who is Yahweh?’ or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

¹⁰सेवकाजवळ त्याच्या धन्याबद्दल कधीही वाईट गोष्टी सांगू नका. जर तुम्ही सांगितल्या तर धनी तुमच्यावर कधीही विश्वास ठेवणार नाही. तुम्हीच अपराधी आहात असे त्याला वाटेल.

¹⁰“Don’t slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.

¹¹काही लोक त्यांच्या वडिलांविरुध्द बोलतात आणि ते त्यांच्या आईबद्दल आदर दाखवीत नाहीत.

¹¹There is a generation that curses their father, and doesn’t bless their mother.

¹²There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹³There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.

¹⁴There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

¹⁵“The leach has two daughters: ‘Give, give.’ “There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don’t say, ‘Enough:’

¹⁶ Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. , the barren womb; the earth that is not satisfied with water; and the fire that doesn’t say, ‘Enough.’

¹⁷जो माणूस त्याच्या वडिलांची चेष्टा करतो वा त्याचा आईचे ऐकत नाही त्याला शिक्षा होईल. त्याचे डोळे गिधाडाने वा एखाद्या रानटी पक्ष्याने खाण्याइतके वाईट त्याच्या बाबतीत घडेल.

¹⁷“The eye that mocks at his father, and scorns obedience to his mother: the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the young eagles shall eat it.

¹⁸तीन गोष्टी माझ्या समजण्यापलिकडे आहेत, खरं म्हणजे चार गोष्टी, ज्या मी समजू शकत नाही.

¹⁸“There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don’t understand:

¹⁹आकाशात उडणारा गरुड, दगडावर चालणारा साप, समुद्रात जाणारे जहाज आणि स्त्रीच्या प्रेमात पडलेला पुरुष

¹⁹The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent on a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.

²⁰जी स्त्री नवऱ्याशी एकनिष्ठ नसते ती तिने काहीही चूक केलेली नाही असे वागते. ती खाते, आंघोळ करते आणि तिने काहीही चूक केली नाही असे म्हणते.

²⁰“So is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

²¹तीन गोष्टी पृथ्वीवर संकटे आणतात, खरे म्हणजे चार गोष्टी, ज्यांचा भार पृथ्वी पेलू शकत नाही.

²¹“For three things the earth tremble, and under four, it can’t bear up:

²²राजा होणारा सेवक, मूर्ख माणूस ज्याच्याकडे त्याला लागणाऱ्या सर्व वस्तू आहेत.

²²For a servant when he is king; a fool when he is filled with food;

²³प्रेम न मिळालेली तरीही नवरा मिळवणारी स्त्री आणि मालकिणीवर सत्ता गाजवणारी नोकर असलेली मुलगी

²³for an unloved woman when she is married; and a handmaid who is heir to her mistress.

²⁴पृथ्वीवरच्या चार गोष्टी अगदी लहान आहेत पण त्या अतिशय शहाणपणाच्या आहेत.

²⁴“There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise:

²⁵मुंग्या अगदी लहान आणि दुर्बल असतात पण तरी ही त्या उन्हाळाभर अन्न साठवतात.

²⁵the ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.

²⁶ससा अगदी लहान प्राणी आहे. पण ते खडकात आपले घर करतात.

²⁶The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.

²⁷टोळांना राजा नसतो पण तरीही ते एकत्र काम करु शकतात.

²⁷The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.

²⁸पाली हाताने पकडण्याइतक्या लहान असतात. पण तुम्ही त्यांना राजाच्या घरातदेखील पाहू शकता.

²⁸You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.

²⁹तीन गोष्टी चालताना फार महत्वाच्या वाटतात, खरे म्हणजे चार.

²⁹“There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:

³⁰सिंह सर्व प्राण्यात सगळ्यात बलवान आहे. त्याला कशाचीही भीती वाटत नाही.

³⁰The lion, which is mightiest among animals, and doesn’t turn away for any;

³¹गर्वाने चालणारा कोंबडा, बकरी आणि त्याच्या लोकांमध्ये असलेला राजा.

³¹the greyhound, the male goat also; and the king against whom there is no rising up.

³²जर तुम्ही मूर्ख असाल आणि इतरांपेक्षा आपण चांगले आहोत असे तुम्हाला वाटत असेल आणि तुम्ही वाईट गोष्टींच्या योजना आखत असाल तर तुम्ही ते थांबवा आणि तुम्ही काय करीत आहात याचा विचार करा.

³²“If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, put your hand over your mouth.

³³For as the churning of milk brings forth butter, and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.”
