¹यदि तिमी कुनै अधिकृतसित भोजनमा बसेको छौ भने याद राख तिमी कसको अघि छौ।

¹When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,

²तिमी धेरै खाने गर्थ्यौ भने पनि तिमीले आफूलाई नियन्त्रणमा राख्नु पर्छ।

²And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.

³उसको स्वादिलो भोजनद्वारा परिक्षीत नहोउ किनभने उसको भोजन छलपूर्ण हुन्छ। -7-

³Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.

⁴धनी बन्न चेष्टा गर्दै आफैंलाई नथकाऊ। यदि तिमी बुद्धिमानी छौ भने तिमीले यस्तो गर्न बन्द गर।

⁴Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.

⁵धन-सम्पत्ति हेर्दा-हेर्दा शेष भएर जान्छ। धन सम्पत्ति आफ्नो पंखेटा फैलाएर उडेर जाने चरा झैं आकाशमा जान्छ। -8-

⁵For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.

⁶एउटा कञ्जूस मानिस सित भोजन नखाऊ। उसको घरमा पकाएको स्वादिलो भोजनको इच्छा नगर।

⁶Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,

⁷त्यो यस्तो मानिस हो जो आफ्नो भोजनको मोल लगाई रहन्छ। तिमीलाई त भन्छ, “तिमी खाऊ, मस्त भई खाऊ,” तर त्यो उसको मनभित्रबाट भनेको होइन।

⁷For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, `Eat and drink,` saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.

⁸तिमीले अलिकति खाएको पनि उकेलि दिने छौ अनि तिमीले उसलाई गरेका प्रशंसाहरू व्यर्थ भएर जान्छन्। -9-

⁸Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.

⁹मूर्खले तिम्रा ज्ञानी वचनहरूलाई घृणा गर्छ, मूर्खसित कुरा नगर। -10-

⁹In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.

¹⁰जमीनमा पुरानो सिमाना भए त्यसलाई सार्ने प्रयास नगर। टुहुरा-टुहुरीहरूको जमीन जबरजस्ती दखल नगर।

¹⁰Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,

¹¹किनभने परमप्रभु ती अनाथहरूको शक्तिशाली संरक्षक हुनु हुन्छ जसले अनाथहरूको पक्षमा तिमीसित अदालतमा लडनु हुन्छ। -11-

¹¹For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.

¹²तिमीहरूको विचारलाई अनुशासनमा लगाऊ अनि ज्ञानको शिक्षाहरूमा ध्यान देऊ। -12-

¹²Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.

¹³आवश्यकता अनुसार नानीलाई सधैं सजाय देऊ। सजाय दिदाँ त्यो मर्दैन।

¹³Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.

¹⁴यदि तिमीले उसलाई सजाय दियौ भने, तिमीले उसलाई चिहानबाट रक्षा गर्ने छौ। -13-

¹⁴Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.

¹⁵हे मेरो छोरो, तिमी बुद्धिमान् भयौ भने म खुशी हुनेछु।

¹⁵My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,

¹⁶यदि तिमीले सही कुराहरू गरेको सुन्न पाए म हृदयबाट नै खुशी हुने थिँए।

¹⁶And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.

¹⁷पापीहरूको ईर्ष्या नगर। तर सबै समयमा, परमप्रभुलाई सम्मान गर।

¹⁷Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.

¹⁸तब तिम्रो एउटा भविष्य हुन्छ, तिम्रो आशा कहिल्यै हराउने छैन। -15-

¹⁸For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.

¹⁹मेरो छोरो, सुन र ज्ञानी बन! सधैं सही बाटोमा हिडने कुरा ख्याल गर।

¹⁹Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,

²⁰धेरै भोजन गर्ने तथा दाखरस पिउँने मानिस सित मित्रता नराख।

²⁰Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

²¹जुन मानिसले धेरै खान्छ अनि धेरै पिउँछ भने गरीब हुन्छ। उसको उडाइले उसलाई थोत्रो लुगा लगाउने बनाई दिन्छ। -19-

²¹For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.

²²तिम्रा बाबु जसले तिमीलाई जीवन दिए उनको बचनहरू सुन। तिम्री आमा भनेर उनलाई हेला नगर।

²²Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.

²³सत्यतालाई किन अनि यसलाई नबेच। ज्ञान, अनुशासन अनि समझ शक्तिलाई पनि किन।

²³Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,

²⁴इमान्दार मानिसका बाबु अति सुखी मानिस हुन। यदि कुनै मानिसको बुद्धिमान नानी छ, भने त्यस नानीले घरमा खुशीयाली ल्याउँछ।

²⁴The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.

²⁵यसर्थ तिम्रा आमा-बाबु तिमी सित खुशी भई बसुन्। तिम्री आमाले आनन्द पाउन। -17-

²⁵Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.

²⁶हे मेरो छोरो! म जे भन्दैछु अलिक ध्यान दिएर सुन। मैले भनेका कुराहरू स्वीकार गर।

²⁶Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.

²⁷एउटी वेश्या एक गहिरो खाडल जस्तो हो एक व्यभिचारिणी स्त्री, एक साँधुरो इनार जस्तो हो।

²⁷For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.

²⁸एउटा खराब आइमाई डाँकुले झैं बाटो ढुकेर वस्छे अनि धेरै मानिसहरूलाई अविश्वासी बनाउँछे। -18-

²⁸She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.

²⁹कसको दयनीयता छ? कसको दुःख छ? को कष्टमा डुबेकोछ? को झगडा टंटामा फँसेकोछ? बिना कारण कसले चोट पाएको छ? कसको आँखा राता भएका छन्?

²⁹Who hath wo? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

³⁰तिनीहरू ती हुन् जो रात दिन दाखरसको सेवनमा बिताउछन अनि जो मिश्रित मद्य चाख्न भोजनहरूमा जान्छन्।

³⁰Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.

³¹दाखरसद्वारा दाखको रातो रंगद्वारा यसको प्याला भित्रको चमकद्वारा सम्मोहित नहोऊ। यो बिना अवरोध घाँटीबाट तल स्वाट्टै जान्छ।

³¹See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.

³²तर अन्तमा यसले सर्पले झैं डस्छ गोप्य विष भएको विषालु सर्पले झैं डस्छ गोप्य विष भएको विषालु सर्पले झैं डस्छ।

³²Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.

³³तिमीले विचित्र चीजहरू देख्ने छौ। भ्रान्त विचार, तिम्रो मनमा कूद्ने छन्।

³³Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.

³⁴तिमीलाई यस्तो लाग्नेछ महासमुद्रको माथिल्लो सतहमा सुतिरहेछौ, तिमी जहाज माथि सुतिरहेछौ।

³⁴And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.

³⁵तिमी भन्छौ तिनीहरूले मलाई हिर्काए मैले अनुभव गरिनँ, तिनीहरूले पिटे तर मलाई थाहा भएन। म कति वेला ब्यूँझन्छु? म जान्छु अनि अर्का मद्य पिउँछु। -19-

³⁵`They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake — I seek it yet again!`
