¹दुष्ट मानिसहरूको डाह नगर। तिनीहरूको संगतको इच्छा नगर।

¹Be not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

²तिनीहरू आफ्नो हृदयमा नराम्रा योजनाहरू मात्र रच्छन्। तिनीहरू अरूलाई कसरी कष्ट दिने त्यस विषयमा मात्र वकिरहेका हुन्छन्। -20-

²For destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

³एउटा घर ज्ञान द्वारा निर्माण गरिन्छ र समझशक्ति द्वारा यसलाई राम्रो स्याहार सुसार गरिन्छ।

³By wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

⁴अनि ज्ञानद्वारा यसको भण्डारकोठाहरू विरल बहुमूल्य अनि असल चीजहरूले भरिन्छन्। -21-

⁴And by knowledge the inner parts are filled, [With] all precious and pleasant wealth.

⁵एकजना बुद्धिमान मानिस, एउटा बलवान मानिस भन्दा असल हो। एकजना ज्ञानी मानिस महान शक्ति भएको मनिस भन्दा असल हो।

⁵Mighty [is] the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

⁶यसकारण तिमीले लडाई लडन। अघि सावधानी पूर्वक योजनाहरू बनाउनु पर्छ। यदि तिमी विजयी हुनु चहान्छौ भने तिमीले धेरै सल्लाहकारहरूको सल्लाह लिनुपर्छ। -22-

⁶For by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance [is] in a multitude of counsellors.

⁷मूर्ख मानिसले ज्ञान के हो बुझ्न सक्तैन शहरको फटकमा बसेर कुनै महत्वपूर्ण विषयमा तर्क गरिरहेको समय मूर्ख मानिसले केही बोल्न सक्तैन। -23-

⁷Wisdom [is] high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

⁸दुष्ट षडयन्त्र सधैं गरिरहन्छौ भने, मानिसहरूले तिमीलाई जाल रच्ने भनि बोलाउँछन्।

⁸Whoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

⁹मूर्ख मानिसले गर्न चाहेका कुरा पापपूर्ण मात्र हुन्छन्। मानिसहरूले यस्तालाई घृणा गर्छन् जसले अन्य मानिसहरू भन्दा आफूलाई माथिल्लो तहको सम्झन्छ। -24-

⁹The thought of folly [is] sin, And an abomination to man [is] a scorner.

¹⁰यदि तिमीले आफैंलाई सकंटको समयमा कमजोर देखाउँछौ भने, तिमी साच्चै नै कमजोर हौ।

¹⁰Thou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

¹¹यदि मानिसहरू कसैलाई मार्ने दाऊमा रहेको पाए तिमीले त्यस मानिसलाई बचाउने भरमग्दुर प्रयास गर्नु पर्छ।

¹¹If [from] delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter — thou keepest back.

¹²यदि तिमीले भन्छौ “हेर, हामीहरूलाई यो कहिल्यै थाहा थिएन” के उहाँ जसले मानिसहरूको हृदयहरूलाई जाँच गर्नु हुन्छ यो सत्यतालाई जान्नु हुन्न र? उहाँ जसले मानिसहरूको आत्माहरूलाई पहारा दिनु हुन्छु यसको बारेमा जान्नु हुन्न र? अनि उहाँले प्रत्येक मानिसलाई उसको काम अनुसार दण्ड दिनुहुनेछ। -26-

¹²When thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.` Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

¹³हे मेरो छोरो, मह उपभोग गर, यो असल हो, यो मुखमा अति नै गुलियो हुन्छ।

¹³Eat my son, honey that [is] good, And the honeycomb — sweet to thy palate.

¹⁴यसरी नै यो पनि तिमी जान कि त्यो तिम्रो आत्मा ज्ञानमा रमाउँछ। यदि तिमीले यो ज्ञान प्राप्त गर्यौ भने तिम्रो भविष्य हुनेछ, तिम्रो आशा कहिल्यै हराउने हुँदैन। -27-

¹⁴So [is] the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

¹⁵एकजना चोर झैं होऊ जसले धर्मी मानिसको घरमा छापा मार्छ अनि यसबाट चिजबिचहरू लुटेर लान्छ।

¹⁵Lay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

¹⁶धर्मी मानिस सात पल्टसम्म लडे पनि ऊ फेरि उठ्छ। तर दुष्ट मानिसहरूलाई दुःख कष्टले लडाउँछ। -28-

¹⁶For seven [times] doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

¹⁷शत्रु हार्दा पनि खुशी नहोउ। शत्रुले ठोक्कर पाउँदा तिमी खुशी नबन।

¹⁷In the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

¹⁸यदि तिमीले यसो गर्र्यो भने परमप्रभुले चाल पाउनु हुनेछ अनि उहाँ तिमी सित निरास हुनु हुनेछ र यस्तो हुन सक्छ कि तिम्रो शत्रुलाई नै उहाँले सहायत गर्नु हुन्छ होला। -29-

¹⁸Lest Jehovah see, and [it be] evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

¹⁹दुष्ट मानिसहरूको कारणले गर्दा क्रोधित नबन; दुष्टहरूको डाहा नगर,

¹⁹Fret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

²⁰किनभने दुष्ट मानिसहरूको भविष्य छैन, तिनीहरू एउटा बत्ती झैं निभ्नेछन्। -30-

²⁰For there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

²¹हे! मेरो छोरा, परमप्रभुको अनि राजाको डर मान् अनि विद्रोहीहरूसँग कहिले सम्मिलित नहोऊ।

²¹Fear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

²²किनभने त्यस्ता मानिसहरू एकसी नासिनेछन। अनि तिमीलाई थाहाँ हुदैन कि कस्तो खालको कष्ट परमेश्वर र राजाले तिनीहरूमाथि ल्याउने छन्।

²²For suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both — who knoweth!

²³यी ज्ञानी मानिसहरूका वचनहरू हुनः न्याय गर्दा पक्षपात गर्नु अनुचित हुन्छ।

²³These also are for the wise: — To discern faces in judgment is not good.

²⁴एकजना न्यायधीस जसले अपराधीलाई निर्दोष भनी फैसला गर्छ भने राष्ट्रहरू द्वारा ऊ श्रापित हुनेछ अरू राष्ट्रहरू द्वारा ऊ निन्दित हुनेछ।

²⁴Whoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou [art] righteous,` Peoples execrate him — nations abhor him.

²⁵तर जसले अपराधीलाई सजाय दिन्छ ऊ जनप्रिय हुनेछ र ऊ एकदमै धन्य हुनेछ।

²⁵And to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

²⁶निष्पक्ष वाक्य यस्तो चीज हो जसले मानिसहरूलाई आनन्दित तुल्याउँछ। यो ओठमा लिएको चुम्बन झैं हो।

²⁶Lips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

²⁷पहिले बाहिरी काम गर। खेतको काममा आफूलाई स्थापित गर अनि त्यस पछि तिम्रो घर बनाऊ।

²⁷Prepare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field — go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

²⁸तिम्रो छिमेकीको विरूद्ध कुनै न्यायिक कारण बिना गवाहीहरू नदेऊ झूटो नबोल।

²⁸Be not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

²⁹यसो नभन, “उसले मलाई जसो गर्यो म उसलाई त्यस्तै गर्नेछु! उसको कार्य अनुसार म उसको बद्ला लिने छु।”

²⁹Say not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.`

³⁰म एकजना अल्छे मानिसको भूमि भएर हिडदै आएँ। म एउटा विवेकहीन मानिसको दाखबारी भएर हिँडे।

³⁰Near the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

³¹त्यो भूमि काडाको झाडीले छोपेको छ, जता ततै बेकामको झार-पात उम्रेको छ। अनि ढुङ्गाको पर्खाल भत्केको छ।

³¹And lo, it hath gone up — all of it — thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

³²मैले यसलाई राम्ररी हेरें, अनि यसको बारेमा विचार गरे, मैले बुझें अनि एउटा पाठ सिकें।

³²And I see — I — I do set my heart, I have seen — I have received instruction,

³³एक छिनको सुताईले अनि एक छिनको आरामले।

³³A little sleep — a little slumber — A little folding of the hands to lie down.

³⁴दरिद्रता अनि अभाव तिमी माथि सशस्त्र मानिस झैं भएर आउनेछ जसलाई तिमीले हराउन असक्षम हुन्छौ।

³⁴And thy poverty hath come [as] a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!
