¹ یک روز خداوند به یونس، پسر امیتای فرمود:

¹Now the word of Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

² «به نینوا، شهر بزرگ برو و به مردم آنجا بگو که ظلم و شرارت آنها به پیشگاه من رسیده است.»

²“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

³ امّا یونس خواست که از حضور خداوند فرار کند. پس به بندر یافا رفت و در آنجا یک کشتی دید که عازم اسپانیا بود. یونس کرایه خود را داد و با ملوانان سوار شد تا به اسپانیا رفته و از خداوند دور گردد.

³But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

⁴ امّا خداوند باد شدیدی بر دریا فرستاد. توفان به قدری شدید بود که نزدیک بود کشتی درهم شکسته شود.

⁴But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

⁵ ملوانان ترسیدند و هرکدام نزد خدای خود فریاد می‌کرد و کمک می‌طلبید. سپس برای اینکه کشتی را سبک کنند، بارهای کشتی را به دریا انداختند. در این هنگام یونس در پایین کشتی دراز کشیده و به خواب سنگینی فرو رفته بود.

⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

⁶ ناخدای کشتی او را دید و گفت: «چرا خوابیده‌ای؟ بلند شو و نزد خدای خود دعا کن، شاید بر ما رحم کند و جان ما را نجات دهد.»

⁶So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God or, gods ! Maybe your God or, gods will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

⁷ ملوانان به یکدیگر گفتند: «بیایید قرعه بیاندازیم و ببینیم به‌خاطر چه کسی به این بلا دچار شده‌ایم.» آنها قرعه انداختند و قرعه به نام یونس افتاد.

⁷They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

⁸ آنها به یونس گفتند: «به ما بگو تقصیر کیست؟ شغل تو چیست؟ از کجا آمده‌ای و اهل کجا هستی؟»

⁸Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

⁹ یونس گفت: «من عبرانی هستم و خداوندی را می‌پرستم که خدای آسمان و آفرینندهٔ دریا و خشکی است.»

⁹He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

¹⁰ سپس یونس برای آنها تعریف کرد که از پیشگاه خداوند فرار کرده است. ملوانان ترسیدند و به او گفتند: «تو کار بسیار بدی کرده‌ای.»

¹⁰Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

¹¹ توفان هر لحظه شدیدتر می‌شد. بنابراین ملوانان از یونس پرسیدند: «ما با تو چه کار کنیم تا دریا آرام شود؟»

¹¹Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

¹² یونس گفت: «مرا بردارید و به دریا بیندازید تا دریا آرام شود، زیرا می‌دانم که این تقصیر من است که شما گرفتار این توفان شده‌اید.»

¹²He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

¹³ امّا ملوانان با تمام قدرت خود، کوشش می‌کردند پارو بزنند و کشتی را به خشکی برسانند. امّا توفان هر لحظه شدیدتر می‌شد و آنها نمی‌توانستند کاری بکنند.

¹³Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

¹⁴ پس به پیشگاه خداوند دعا کرده گفتند: «ای خداوند، ما را به‌خاطر این مرد هلاک نکن و ما را مسئول مرگ او نساز، چون ما گناهی نداریم، بلکه همهٔ این وقایع طبق ارادهٔ تو بوده است.»

¹⁴Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

¹⁵ سپس یونس را برداشتند و به دریا انداختند. در همان لحظه دریا آرام شد.

¹⁵So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

¹⁶ ملوانان به‌خاطر این اتّفاق از خداوند ترسیدند و برای او قربانی کردند و هر کدام نذر نمودند تا او را خدمت کنند. به دستور خداوند، یک ماهی بزرگ یونس را بلعید و یونس مدّت سه شبانه‌روز در شکم ماهی بود.

¹⁶Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.

¹⁷ به دستور خداوند، یک ماهی بزرگ یونس را بلعید و یونس مدّت سه شبانه‌روز در شکم ماهی بود.

¹⁷Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
