¹Now it fell on a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father.

⁶Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.”

⁷Cel ce -i ducea armele i -a răspuns: ,,Fă tot ce ai în inimă, n'asculta decît de simţimîntul tău, şi iată-mă cu tine, gata să te urmez oriunde.``

⁷His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Turn and, behold, I am with you according to your heart.”

⁸,,Ei bine!`` a zis Ionatan, ,,haidem la oamenii aceştia şi să ne arătăm lor.

⁸Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.

⁹Dacă ne vor zice: ,Opriţi-vă pînă vom veni noi la voi!` vom rămînea pe loc, şi nu ne vom sui la ei.

⁹If they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them.

¹⁰Dar dacă vor zice: ,Suiţi-vă la noi!` ne vom sui, căci Domnul îi dă în mînile noastre. Acesta să ne fie semnul.``

¹⁰But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up; for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.”

¹¹S'au arătat amîndoi străjii Filistenilor, şi Filistenii au zis: ,,Iată că Evreii ies din găurile în cari s'au ascuns.``

¹¹Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!”

¹²Şi oamenii cari erau de strajă au vorbit astfel lui Ionatan şi celui ce -i ducea armele: ,,Suiţi-vă la noi, ca să vă arătăm ceva.`` Ionatan a zis celui ce -i ducea armele: ,,Suie-te după mine, căci Domnul îi dă în mînile lui Israel.``

¹²The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me; for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

¹³Şi Ionatan s'a suit ajutîndu-se cu mînile şi picioarele, şi cel ce -i ducea armele a mers după el. Filistenii au căzut înaintea lui Ionatan, şi cel ce -i ducea armele arunca moartea în urma lui.

¹³Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him.

¹⁴În această întîie înfrîngere, Ionatan şi cel ce -i ducea armele au ucis douăzeci de oameni, pe întindere de aproape o jumătate de pogon de pămînt.

¹⁴That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.

¹⁵A intrat groaza în tabără, în ţară şi în tot poporul; straja şi chiar şi prădătorii s'au spăimîntat; ţara s'a îngrozit. Era groaza... lui Dumnezeu.

¹⁵There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling.

¹⁶Străjerii lui Saul, cari erau la Ghibea lui Beniamin, au văzut că mulţimea se împrăştie şi fuge în toată părţile.

¹⁶The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away, and scattered.

¹⁷Atunci Saul a zis a poporului care era cu el: ,,Numărăţi, vă rog, şi vedeţi cine a plecat din mijlocul nostru.`` Au numărat, şi iată că lipsea Ionatan şi cel ce -i purta armele.

¹⁷Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.

¹⁸Şi Saul a zis lui Ahia: ,,Adu încoace chivotul lui Dumnezeu!`` -Căci pe vremea aceea chivotul lui Dumnezeu era cu copiii lui Israel. -

¹⁸Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God was with the children of Israel at that time.

¹⁹Pe cînd vorbea Saul cu preotul zarva în tabăra Filistenilor se făcea tot mai mare; şi Saul a zis preotului: ,,Trage-ţi mîna!``

¹⁹It happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”

²⁰Apoi Saul şi tot poporul care era cu el s'au strîns, şi au înaintat pînă la locul luptei; şi Filistenii au întors sabia, unii împotriva altora, şi învălmăşala era nespus de mare.

²⁰Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle: and behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow: a very great confusion.

²¹Evreii cari erau mai dinainte la Filisteni, şi cari se suiseră cu ei în tabără de pe unde erau împrăştiaţi, s'au unit cu Israeliţii cari erau cu Saul şi Ionatan.

²¹Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines as before, and who went up with them into the camp, from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

²²Toţi bărbaţii lui Israel cari se ascunseseră în muntele lui Efraim, aflînd că Filistenii fugeau, au început să -i urmărească şi ei în bătaie.

²²Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

²³Domnul a izbăvit pe Israel în ziua aceea, şi lupta s'a întins pînă dincolo de Bet-Aven.

²³So Yahweh saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.

²⁴Ziua aceea a fost obositoare pentru bărbaţii lui Israel. Saul pusese pe popor să jure, zicînd: ,,Blestemat să fie omul care va mînca pîne pînă seara, pînă mă voi răzbuna pe vrăjmaşii mei!`` Şi nimeni nu mîncase.

²⁴The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

²⁵Tot poporul ajunsese într'o pădure, unde se găsea miere pe faţa pămîntului.

²⁵All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.

²⁶Cînd a intrat poporul în pădure, a văzut mierea curgînd; dar niciunul n'a dus mierea la gură, căci poporul ţinea jurămîntul.

²⁶When the people had come to the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.

²⁷Ionatan nu ştia de jurămîntul pe care pusese tatăl său pe popor să -l facă; a întins vîrful toiagului pe care -l avea în mînă, l -a vîrît într'un fagure de miere, şi a dus mîna la gură; şi ochii i s'au luminat.

²⁷But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath: therefore he put forth the end of the rod who was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

²⁸Atunci cineva din popor, vorbindu -i, i -a zis: ,,Tatăl tău a pus pe popor să jure, zicînd: ,Blestemat să fie omul care va mînca astăzi!`` Şi poporul era sleit de puteri.

²⁸Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food this day.’” The people were faint.

²⁹Şi Ionatan a zis: ,,Tatăl meu turbură poporul; vedeţi dar cum mi s'au luminat ochii, pentrucă am gustat puţin din mierea aceasta!

²⁹Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

³⁰Negreşit, dacă poporul ar fi mîncat azi din prada pe care a găsit -o la vrăjmaşii lui, n'ar fi fost înfrîngerea Filistenilor mai mare?``

³⁰How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? For now has there been no great slaughter among the Philistines.”

³¹În ziua aceea au bătut pe Filisteni dela Micmaş pînă la Aialon. Poporul era foarte obosit,

³¹They struck of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint;

³²şi s'a aruncat asupra prăzii. A luat oi, boi şi viţei, i -a junghiat pe pămînt şi i -a mîncat cu sînge cu tot.

³²and the people flew on the spoil, and took sheep, and cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.

³³Au spus lucrul acesta lui Saul, şi i-au zis: ,,Iată că poporul păcătuieşte împotriva Domnului, mîncînd cu sînge.`` Saul a zis: ,,Voi faceţi o nelegiuire; rostogoliţi îndată o piatră mare încoace.``

³³Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh, in that they eat meat with the blood.” He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me this day!”

³⁴Apoi a adăugat: ,,Împrăştiaţi-vă printre popor, şi spuneţi fiecăruia să-şi aducă boul sau oaia, şi să -l junghie aici. Apoi să mîncaţi, şi nu păcătuiţi împotriva Domnului, mîncînd cu sînge.`` Şi peste noapte, fiecare din popor şi -a adus boul cu mîna, ca să -l junghie pe piatră.

³⁴Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Bring me here every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

³⁵Saul a zidit un altar Domnului: acesta a fost cel dintîi altar pe care l -a zidit Domnului.

³⁵Saul built an altar to Yahweh. This was the first altar that he built to Yahweh.

³⁶Saul a zis: ,,Să ne pogorîm în noaptea aceasta după Filisteni, să -i jefuim pînă la lumina zilei, şi să nu lăsăm să rămînă unul măcar.`` Ei au zis: ,,Fă tot ce vei crede.`` Atunci preotul a zis: ,,Să ne apropiem aici de Dumnezeu``.

³⁶Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near here to God.”

³⁷Şi Saul a întrebat pe Dumnezeu: ,,Să mă pogor după Filisteni? Îi vei da în mînile lui Israel?`` Dar în clipa aceea nu i -a dat niciun răspuns.

³⁷Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day.

³⁸Saul a zis: ,,Apropiaţi-vă aici, toate căpeteniile poporului; căutaţi şi vedeţi de cine şi cum a fost săvîrşit păcatul acesta astăzi.

³⁸Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people; and know and see in which this sin has been this day.

³⁹Căci viu este Domnul, Izbăvitorul lui Israel: chiar dacă l-ar fi săvîrşit fiul meu Ionatan, va muri.`` Şi nimeni din tot poporul nu i -a răspuns.

³⁹For, as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

⁴⁰Atunci a zis întregului Israel: ,,Aşezaţi-vă voi deoparte; şi eu şi fiul meu Ionatan vom sta de cealaltă.`` Şi poporul a zis lui Saul: ,,Fă ce vei crede.``

⁴⁰Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”

⁴¹Saul a zis Domnului: ,,Dumnezeul lui Israel, arată adevărul.`` Sorţul a căzut pe Ionatan şi pe Saul, şi poporul a scăpat.

⁴¹Therefore Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Show the right.” Jonathan and Saul were chosen; but the people escaped.

⁴²Saul a zis: ,,Aruncaţi sorţul între mine şi fiul meu Ionatan.`` Şi sorţul a căzut pe Ionatan.

⁴²Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected.

⁴³Saul a zis lui Ionatan: ,,Spune-mi ce-ai făcut``. Ionatan i -a spus şi a zis: ,,Am gustat puţină miere, cu vîrful toiagului pe care -l aveam în mînă: iată-mă, voi muri.``

⁴³Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!” Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.”

⁴⁴Şi Saul a zis: ,,Dumnezeu să Se poarte cu toată asprimea faţă de mine, dacă nu vei muri, Ionatane!``

⁴⁴Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

⁴⁵Poporul a zis lui Saul: ,,Ce! Să moară Ionatan, el, care a făcut această mare izbăvire în Israel? Niciodată! Viu este Domnul, că un păr din capul lui nu va cădea la pămînt, căci cu Dumnezeu a lucrat el în ziua aceasta.`` Astfel poporul a scăpat pe Ionatan de la moarte.

⁴⁵The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day!” So the people rescued Jonathan, that he didn’t die.

⁴⁶Saul a încetat să mai urmărească pe Filisteni, şi Filistenii s'au dus acasă.

⁴⁶Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

⁴⁷După ce a luat Saul domnia peste Israel, a făcut război în toate părţile cu toţi vrăjmaşii lui: cu Moab, cu copiii lui Amon, cu Edom, cu împăraţii din Ţoba, şi cu Filistenii; şi ori încotro se întorcea, era biruitor.

⁴⁷Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

⁴⁸S'a arătat viteaz, a bătut pe Amalec, şi a scăpat pe Israel din mîna celor ce -l jăfuiau.

⁴⁸He did valiantly, and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who despoiled them.

⁴⁹Fiii lui Saul au fost: Ionatan, Işvi şi Malchişua. Cele două fete ale lui se numeau: cea mai mare Merab, iar cea mai mică Mical.

⁴⁹Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

⁵⁰Numele nevestei lui Saul era Ahinoam, fata lui Ahimaaţ. Numele căpeteniei oştirii lui era Abner, fiul lui Ner, unchiul lui Saul.

⁵⁰and the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

⁵¹Chis, tatăl lui Saul, şi Ner, tatăl lui Abner, erau fiii lui Abiel.

⁵¹Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

⁵²În tot timpul vieţii lui Saul a fost un război înverşunat împotriva Filistenilor; şi de îndată ce Saul zărea vreun om tare şi voinic, îl lua cu el.

⁵²There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him to him.
