¹Samuel a zis lui Saul: ,,Pe mine m'a trimes Domnul să te ung împărat peste poporul Lui, peste Israel: Ascultă dar ce zice Domnul.

¹Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the words of Yahweh.

²Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor: ,Mi-aduc aminte de ceeace a făcut Amalec lui Israel, cînd i -a astupat drumul la ieşirea lui din Egipt.

²Thus says Yahweh of Armies, ‘I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.

³Du-te acum, bate pe Amalec, şi nimiceşte cu desăvîrşire tot ce -i al lui; să nu -i cruţi, şi să omori bărbaţii şi femeile, copiii şi pruncii, cămilele şi măgarii, boii şi oile.``

³Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

⁴Saul a adunat poporul, şi l -a numărat la Telaim: erau două sute de mii de oameni pedeştri, şi zece mii de oameni din Iuda.

⁴Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

⁵Saul a mers pînă la cetatea lui Amalec, şi a pus nişte oameni la pîndă în vale.

⁵Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

⁶Şi a zis Cheniţilor: ,,Duceţi-vă, plecaţi şi ieşiţi din mijlocul lui Amalec, ca să nu vă prăpădesc împreună cu el; căci... voi v'aţi purtat cu bunăvoinţă faţă de copiii lui Israel, cînd s'au suit din Egipt``. Şi Cheniţii au plecat din mijlocul lui Amalec.

⁶Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

⁷Saul a bătut pe Amalec, dela Havila pînă la Şur..., care este în faţa Egiptului.

⁷Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, that is before Egypt.

⁸A prins viu pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec, şi a nimicit cu desăvîrşire tot poporul, trecîndu -l prin ascuţişul săbiei.

⁸He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

⁹Dar Saul şi poporul au cruţat pe Agag, şi oile cele mai bune, boii cei mai buni, vitele grase, mieii graşi, şi tot ce era mai bun; n'a vrut să le nimicească cu desvîrşire şi au nimicit numai tot ce era prost şi nebăgat în seamă.

⁹But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the cattle, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldn’t utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

¹⁰Domnul a vorbit lui Samuel, şi i -a zis:

¹⁰Then the word of Yahweh came to Samuel, saying,

¹¹,,...mi pare rău că am pus pe Saul împărat, căci se abate dela Mine şi nu păzeşte... cuvintele Mele``. Samuel s'a mîhnit......, şi toată noaptea a strigat către Domnul.

¹¹“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.

¹²S'a sculat dis de dimineaţă, ca să se ducă înaintea lui Saul. Şi au venit şi i-au spus: ,,Saul s'a dus la Carmel, şi iată că şi -a înălţat un semn de biruinţă, apoi s'a întors, şi, trecînd mai departe, s'a pogorît la Ghilgal``.

¹²Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”

¹³Samuel s'a dus la Saul, şi Saul i -a zis: ,,Fii binecuvîntat de Domnul! Am păzit cuvîntul Domnului``.

¹³Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.”

¹⁴Samuel a zis: ,,Ce înseamnă behăitul acesta de oi care ajunge la urechile mele, şi mugetul acesta de boi pe care -l aud?``

¹⁴Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”

¹⁵Saul a răspuns: ,,Le-au adus dela Amaleciţi, pentrucă poporul a cruţat oile cele mai bune şi boii cei mai buni, ca să -i jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeului tău; iar pe celelate, le-am nimicit cu desăvîrşire``.

¹⁵Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”

¹⁶Samuel a zis lui Saul: ,,Stai, şi-ţi voi spune ce mi -a zis Domnul astănoapte``. Şi Saul i -a zis: ,,Vorbeşte``.

¹⁶Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh has said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”

¹⁷Samuel a zis: ,,Cînd erai mic în ochii tăi, n'ai ajuns tu căpetenia seminţiilor lui Israel, şi nu te -a uns Domnul ca să fii împărat peste Israel?

¹⁷Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;

¹⁸Domnul te trimisese, zicînd: ,Du-te, şi nimiceşte cu desăvîrşire pe păcătoşii aceia, pe Amaleciţi; războieşte-te cu ei pînă îi vei nimici`.

¹⁸and Yahweh sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’

¹⁹Pentruce n'ai ascultat glasul Domnului? Pentruce te-ai aruncat asupra prăzii, şi ai făcut ce este rău înaintea Domnului?``

¹⁹Why then didn’t you obey the voice of Yahweh, but took the spoils, and did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh?”

²⁰Saul a răspuns lui Samuel: ,,Am ascultat glasul Domnului, şi m'am dus în calea pe care mă trimetea Domnul. Am adus pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec, şi am nimicit cu desăvîrşire pe Amaleciţi;

²⁰Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

²¹dar poporul a luat din pradă oi şi boi, ca pîrgă din ceeace trebuia nimicit cu desăvîrşire, ca să le jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeului tău, la Ghilgal``.

²¹But the people took of the spoil, sheep and cattle, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.”

²²Samuel a zis: ,,Îi plac Domnului mai mult arderile de tot şi jertfele decît ascultarea de glasul Domnului? Ascultarea face mai mult decît jertfele, şi păzirea cuvîntului Său face mai mult decît grăsimea berbecilor.

²²Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yahweh? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

²³Căci neascultarea este tot atît de vinovată ca ghicirea, şi împotrivirea nu este mai puţin vinovată decît închinarea la idoli şi terafimii. Fiindcă ai lepădat cuvîntul Domnului, te leapădă şi El ca împărat``.

²³For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, he has also rejected you from being king.”

²⁴Atunci Saul a zis lui Samuel: ,,Am păcătuit, căci am călcat porunca Domnului, şi n'am ascultat cuvintele tale; mă temeam de popor, şi i-am ascultat glasul.

²⁴Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh, and your words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

²⁵Acum, te rog, iartă-mi păcatul, întoarce-te cu mine, ca să mă închin pînă la pămînt înaintea Domnului.``

²⁵Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh.”

²⁶Samuel a zis lui Saul: ,,Nu mă voi întoarce cu tine: fiindcă ai lepădat cuvîntul Domnului, şi Domnul te leapădă, ca să nu mai fii împărat peste Israel``.

²⁶Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of Yahweh, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

²⁷Şi pe cînd se întorcea Samuel să plece, Saul l -a apucat de pulpana hainei, şi s'a rupt.

²⁷As Samuel turned about to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.

²⁸Samuel i -a zis: ,,Domnul rupe astăzi domnia lui Israel deasupra ta, şi o dă altuia mai bun decît tine.

²⁸Samuel said to him, “Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.

²⁹Cel ce este tăria lui Israel nu minte şi nu Se căieşte, căci nu este un om ca să -I pară rău.``

²⁹Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.”

³⁰Saul a zis iarăş: ,,Am păcătuit! Acum, te rog, cinsteşte-mă în faţa bătrînilor poporului meu, şi în faţa lui Israel; întoarce-te cu mine, ca să mă închin înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeului tău.``

³⁰Then he said, “I have sinned: yet please honor me now before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship Yahweh your God.”

³¹Samuel s'a întors şi a mers după Saul, şi Saul s'a închinat înaintea Domnului.

³¹So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh.

³²Apoi Samuel a zis: ,,Adu-mi pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec.`` Şi Agag a înaintat vesel spre el, căci zicea: ,,Negreşit, a trecut amărăciunea morţii!``

³²Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

³³Samuel a zis: ,,După cum sabia ta a lăsat femei fără copii, tot aşa şi mama ta va fi lăsată fără copii între femei.`` Şi Samuel a tăiat pe Agag în bucăţi înaintea Domnului, la Ghilgal.

³³Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.

³⁴Samuel a plecat la Rama, şi Saul s'a suit acasă la Ghibea lui Saul.

³⁴Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

³⁵Samuel nu s'a mai dus să vadă pe Saul pînă în ziua morţii sale. Dar Samuel plîngea pe Saul, pentrucă Domnul... Se căise că pusese pe Saul împărat peste Israel.

³⁵Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.
