¹Împăratul Belşaţar a făcut un mare ospăţ celor o mie de mai mari ai lui, şi a băut vin înaintea lor.

¹Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

²Şi în cheful vinului, a poruncit să aducă vasele de aur şi de argint, pe cari le luase tatăl său Nebucadneţar din Templul dela Ierusalim, ca să bea cu ele împăratul şi mai marii lui, nevestele şi ţiitoarele lui.

²Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.

³Au adus îndată vasele de aur, cari fuseseră luate din Templu, din casa lui Dumnezeu din Ierusalim, şi au băut din ele împăratul şi mai marii lui, nevestele şi ţiitoarele lui.

³Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.

⁴Au băut vin, şi au lăudat pe dumnezeii de aur, de argint, de aramă şi de fer, de lemn şi de piatră.

⁴They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁵În clipa aceea, s'au arătat degetele unei mîni de om, şi au scris, în faţa sfeşnicului, pe tencuiala zidului palatului împărătesc. Împăratul a văzut această bucată de mînă, care a scris.

⁵In the same hour came forth the fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

⁶Atunci împăratul a îngălbenit, şi gîndurile atît l-au tulburat că i s'au desfăcut încheieturile şoldurilor, şi genunchii i s'au izbit unul de altul.

⁶Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

⁷Împăratul a strigat în gura mare să i se aducă cetitorii în stele, Haldeii şi ghicitorii. Apoi împăratul a luat cuvîntul şi a zis înţelepţilor Babilonului: ,,Oricine va putea citi scrisoarea aceasta şi mi -o va tîlcui, va fi îmbrăcat cu purpură, va purta un lănţişor de aur la gît, şi va avea locul al treilea în cîrmuirea împărăţiei.``

⁷The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

⁸Toţi înţelepţii împăratului au intrat, dar n'au putut nici să citească scrisoarea şi nici s'o tîlcuiască împăratului.

⁸Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

⁹Din pricina aceasta împăratul Belşaţar s'a spăimîntat foarte tare, faţa i s'a îngălbenit şi mai marii lui au rămas încremeniţi.

⁹Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

¹⁰Împărăteasa, la auzul cuvintelor împăratului şi mai marilor lui, a intrat în odaia ospăţului, a luat cuvîntul şi a vorbit astfel: ,,Să trăieşti vecinic, împărate! Să nu te turbure gîndurile tale, şi să nu ţi se îngălbenească faţa!

¹⁰ Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: the queen spoke and said, O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.

¹¹În împărăţia ta este un om, care are în el duhul dumnezeilor celor sfinţi; şi pe vremea tatălui tău, s'au găsit la el lumini, pricepere şi o înţelepciune dumnezeiască. De aceea împăratul Nebucadneţar, tatăl tău, da, tatăl tău, împărate, l -a pus mai mare peste vrăjitori, cititori în stele, Haldei, ghicitori,

¹¹There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

¹²şi anume, pentrucă s'a găsit la el, la Daniel, numit de împărat Beltşaţar, un duh înalt, ştiinţă şi pricepere, putinţa să tîlcuiască visele, să lămurească întrebările grele, şi să deslege lucrurile încîlcite. Să fie chemat dar Daniel, şi el îţi va da tîlcuirea!``

¹²because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.

¹³Atunci Daniel a fost adus înaintea împăratului. Împăratul a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis lui Daniel: ,,Tu eşti Daniel acela, unul din prinşii de război ai lui Iuda, pe cari i -a adus aici din Iuda, tatăl meu împăratul?

¹³Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

¹⁴Am aflat despre tine că ai în tine duhul dumnezeilor, şi că la tine se găsesc lumini, pricepere, şi o înţelepciune nemaipomenită.

¹⁴I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.

¹⁵Au adus înaintea mea pe înţelepţi şi pe cititorii în stele, ca să citească scrierea aceasta şi să mi -o tîlcuiască; dar n'au putut să tîlcuiască aceste cuvinte.

¹⁵Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

¹⁶Am aflat că tu poţi să tîlcuieşti şi să deslegi întrebări grele; acum, dacă vei putea să citeşti scrierea aceasta şi să mi -o tîlcuieşti, vei fi îmbrăcat cu purpură, vei purta un lănţişor de aur la gît, şi vei avea locul al treilea în cîrmuirea împărăţiei!``

¹⁶But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

¹⁷Daniel a răspuns îndată înaintea împăratului: ,,Ţine-ţi darurile, şi dă altuia răsplătirile tale! Totuş voi citi împăratului scrierea, şi i -o voi tîlcui.

¹⁷Then Daniel answered before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

¹⁸Împărate, Dumnezeul cel Prea Înalt dăduse tatălui tău Nebucadneţar: împărăţie, mărime, slavă şi strălucire;

¹⁸You, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty:

¹⁹şi din pricina mărimii pe care i -o dăduse, toate popoarele, neamurile, oamenii de toate limbile se temeau şi tremurau înaintea lui. Căci împăratul omora pe cine voia, şi lăsa cu viaţă pe cine voia; înălţa pe cine voia, şi scobora pe cine voia.

¹⁹and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.

²⁰Dar cînd i s'a îngîmfat inima şi i s'a împietrit duhul pînă la mîndrie, a fost aruncat de pe scaunul lui împărătesc şi a fost despuiat de slava lui;

²⁰But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

²¹a fost izgonit din mijlocul copiilor oamenilor, inima i s'a făcut ca a fiarelor, şi a locuit la un loc cu măgarii sălbatici; i-au dat să mănînce iarbă ca la boi, şi trupul i -a fost udat cu roua cerului, pînă cînd a recunoscut că Dumnezeul cel Prea Înalt stăpîneşte peste împărăţia oamenilor şi că o dă cui vrea.

²¹and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky; until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

²²Dar tu, Belşaţar, fiul lui, nu ţi-ai smerit inima, măcarcă ai ştiut toate aceste lucruri.

²²You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

²³Ci te-ai înălţat împotriva Domnului cerurilor; vasele din casa Lui au fost aduse înaintea ta, şi aţi băut vin cu ele, tu şi mai marii tăi, nevestele şi ţiitoarele tale; ai lăudat pe dumnezeii de argint, de aur, de aramă, de fer, de lemn şi de piatră, cari nici nu văd, nici n'aud, şi nici nu pricep nimic, şi n'ai slăvit pe Dumnezeul în mîna căruia este suflarea ta şi toate căile tale!

²³but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

²⁴De aceea a trimes El acest cap de mînă, care a scris scrierea aceasta.

²⁴Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.

²⁵Iată însă scrierea care a fost scrisă: ,,Numărat, numărat, cîntărit, şi împărţit!``

²⁵This is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

²⁶Şi iată tîlcuirea acestor cuvinte. Numărat, înseamnă că Dumnezeu ţi -a numărat zilele domniei, şi i -a pus capăt.

²⁶This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and brought it to an end;

²⁷Cîntărit, înseamnă că ai fost cîntărit în cumpănă şi ai fost găsit uşor!

²⁷TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

²⁸Împărţit, înseamnă că împărăţia ta va fi împărţită, şi dată Mezilor şi Perşilor!``

²⁸PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

²⁹Îndată, Belşatar a dat poruncă, şi au îmbrăcat pe Daniel cu purpură, i-au pus un lănţişor de aur la gît, şi au dat de ştire că va avea locul al treilea în cîrmuirea împărăţiei.

²⁹Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

³⁰Dar chiar în noaptea aceea, Belşaţar, împăratul Haldeilor, a fost omorît.

³⁰In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

³¹Şi a pus mîna pe împărăţie Dariu, Medul, care era în vîrstă de şasezeci şi doi de ani.

³¹Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
