¹Cuvintele Eclesiastului, fiul lui David, împăratul Ierusalimului.

¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

²O, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor, zice Eclesiastul, o deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor! Totul este deşertăciune.

²“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

³Ce folos are omul din toată truda pe care şi -o dă supt soare?

³What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

⁴Un neam trece, altul vine, şi pămîntul rămîne vecinic în picioare.

⁴One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

⁵Soarele răsare, apune şi aleargă spre locul de unde răsare din nou.

⁵The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

⁶Vîntul suflă spre miază-zi, şi se întoarce spre miază-noapte; apoi iarăş se întoarce, şi începe din nou aceleaşi rotituri.

⁶The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

⁷Toate rîurile se varsă în mare, şi marea tot nu se umple: ele aleargă necurmat spre locul de unde pornesc, ca iarăş să pornească de acolo.

⁷All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

⁸Toate lucrurile sînt într'o necurmată frămîntare, aşa cum nu se poate spune; ochiul nu se mai satură privind, şi urechea nu oboseşte auzind.

⁸All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁹Ce a fost, va mai fi, şi ce s'a făcut, se va mai face; nu este nimic nou supt soare.

⁹That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

¹⁰Dacă este vreun lucru despre care s'ar putea spune: ,,Iată ceva nou!`` de mult lucrul acela era şi în veacurile dinaintea noastră.

¹⁰Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new?” It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

¹¹Nimeni nu-şi mai aduce aminte de ce a fost mai înainte; şi ce va mai fi, ce se va mai întîmpla mai pe urmă nu va lăsa nici o urmă de aducere aminte la cei ce vor trăi mai tîrziu.

¹¹There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

¹²Eu, Eclesiastul, am fost împărat peste Israel, în Ierusalim.

¹²I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹³Mi-am pus inima să cercetez şi să adîncesc cu înţelepciune tot ce se întîmplă supt ceruri: iată o îndeletnicire plină de trudă, la care supune Dumnezeu pe fiii oamenilor.

¹³I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

¹⁴Am văzut tot ce se face supt soare; şi iată că totul este deşertăciune şi goană după vînt!

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹⁵Ce este strîmb, nu se poate îndrepta, şi ce lipseşte nu poate fi trecut la număr.

¹⁵That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

¹⁶Am zis în mine însumi: ,,Iată că am sporit şi am întrecut în înţelepciune pe toţi cei ce au stăpînit înaintea mea peste Ierusalim, şi mintea mea a văzut multă înţelepciune şi ştiinţă.

¹⁶I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

¹⁷Mi-am pus inima să cunosc înţelepciunea, şi să cunosc prostia şi nebunia. Dar am înţeles că şi aceasta este goană după vînt.

¹⁷I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

¹⁸Căci unde este multă înţelepciune, este şi mult necaz, şi cine ştie multe, are şi multă durere.

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
