¹Mai mult face un nume bun de cît untdelemnul mirositor, şi ziua morţii de cît ziua naşterii.

²Mai bine să te duci într'o casă de jale de cît să te duci într'o casă de petrecere; căci acolo îţi aduci aminte de sfîrşitul oricărui om, şi cine trăieşte, îşi pune la inimă lucrul acesta.

²It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.

³Mai bună este întristarea decît rîsul; căci prin întristarea feţei inima se face mai bună.

³Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.

⁴Inima înţelepţilor este în casa de jale, iar inima celor fără minte este în casa petrecerii.

⁴The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

⁵Mai bine să asculţi mustrarea înţeleptului de cît să asculţi la cîntecul celor fără minte.

⁵It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

⁶Căci rîsul celor fără minte este ca pîrăitul spinilor supt căldare. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune.

⁶For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

⁷Averea luată prin silă înebuneşte pe cel înţelept, şi mita strică inima.

⁷Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.

⁸Mai bun este sfîrşitul unui lucru de cît începutul lui; mai bine cel bun la suflet de cît cel îngîmfat.

⁸Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

⁹Nu te grăbi să te mînii în sufletul tău, căci mînia locuieşte în sînul nebunilor.

⁹Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

¹⁰Nu zice: ,,Cum se face că zilele de mai înainte erau mai bune de cît acestea?`` Căci nu din înţelepciune întrebi aşa.

¹⁰Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.

¹¹Înţelepciunea preţuieşte cît o moştenire, şi chiar mai mult pentru cei ce văd soarele.

¹¹Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.

¹²Căci ocrotire dă şi înţelepciunea, ocrotire dă şi argintul; dar un folos mai mult al ştiinţei este că înţelepciunea ţine în viaţă pe cei ce o au.

¹²For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

¹³Uită-te cu băgare de seamă la lucrarea lui Dumnezeu: cine poate să îndrepte ce a făcut El strîmb?

¹³Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked?

¹⁴În ziua fericirii, fii fericit, şi în ziua nenorocirii, gîndeşte-te că Dumnezeu a făcut şi pe una şi pe cealaltă, pentruca omul să nu mai poată şti nimic din ce va fi după el.

¹⁴In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.

¹⁵Tot felul de lucruri am văzut în zilele deşertăciunii mele. Este cîte un om fără prihană, care piere în neprihănirea lui, şi este cîte un nelegiuit, care o duce mult în răutatea lui.

¹⁵All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.

¹⁶Nu fi prea neprihănit şi nu te arăta prea înţelept: pentru ce să te pierzi singur?

¹⁶Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

¹⁷Dar nu fi nici peste măsură de rău şi nu fi fără minte: pentru ce vrei să mori înainte de vreme?

¹⁷Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?

¹⁸Bine este să ţii la aceasta, dar nici pe cealaltă să n'o laşi din mînă; căci cine se teme de Dumnezeu, scapă din toate acestea.

¹⁸It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also from that don’t withdraw your hand; for he who fears God will come forth from them all.

¹⁹Înţelepciunea face pe cel înţelept mai tare de cît zece viteji, cari sînt într'o cetate.

¹⁹Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

²⁰Fiindcă pe pămînt nu este nici un om fără prihană, care să facă binele fără să păcătuiască.

²⁰Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, who does good and doesn’t sin.

²¹Nu lua nici tu seama la toate vorbele cari se spun, ca nu cumva s'auzi pe sluga ta vorbindu-te de rău!

²¹Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;

²²Căci ştie inima ta de cîte ori ai vorbit şi tu de rău pe alţii.

²²for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.

²³Toate acestea le-am cercetat cu înţelepciune. Am zis: ,,Mă voi înţelepţi.`` Dar înţelepciunea a rămas departe de mine.

²³All this have I proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise”; but it was far from me.

²⁴Cu mult mai departe decît era mai înainte, şi ce adîncă! Cine o va putea găsi?

²⁴That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?

²⁵M-am apucat şi am cercetat toate lucrurile, cu gînd să înţeleg, să adîncesc, şi să caut înţelepciunea şi rostul lucrurilor, şi să pricep nebunia răutăţii şi rătăcirea prostiei.

²⁵I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.

²⁶Şi am găsit că mai amară de cît moartea este femeia, a cărei inimă este o cursă şi un laţ, şi ale cărei mîni sînt nişte lanţuri; cel plăcut lui Dumnezeu scapă de ea, dar cel păcătos este prins de ea.

²⁶I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.

²⁷Iată ce am găsit, zice Eclesiastul, cercetînd lucrurile unul cîte unul, ca să le pătrund rostul;

²⁷“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “one to another, to find out the scheme;

²⁸iată ce-mi caută şi acum sufletul, şi n'am găsit. Din o mie am găsit un om: dar o femeie n'am găsit în toate acestea.

²⁸which my soul still seeks; but I have not found. One man among a thousand have I found; but I have not found a woman among all those.

²⁹Numai, iată ce am găsit: că Dumnezeu a făcut pe oameni fără prihană, dar ei umblă cu multe şiretenii.

²⁹Behold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they search for many schemes.”
