¹Cine este ca cel înţelept, şi cine pricepe rostul lucrurilor? Înţelepciunea omului îi luminează faţa, şi asprimea feţei i se schimbă.

¹Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

²Eu îţi spun: ,,Păzeşte poruncile împăratului, din pricina jurămîntului, făcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu.

²I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.

³Nu te grăbi să pleci dinaintea lui, şi nu stărui într'un lucru rău: căci el poate face tot ce vrea,

³Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,

⁴pentrucă vorba împăratului are putere. Cine poate zice: ,,Ce faci?``

⁴for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him, “What are you doing?”

⁵Pe cine păzeşte porunca, nu -l va atinge nici o nenorocire, dar inima înţeleptului cunoaşte şi vremea şi judecata.

⁵Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.

⁶Căci pentru orice lucru este o vreme şi o judecată şi nenorocirea paşte pe om.

⁶For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him.

⁷Dar el nu ştie ce şi cum se va întîmpla, căci n'are nici cine -i spune.

⁷For he doesn’t know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?

⁸Omul nu este stăpîn pe suflarea lui ca s'o poată opri, şi n'are nicio putere peste ziua morţii; în lupta aceasta nu este izbăvire, şi răutatea nu poate scăpa pe cei răi.

⁸There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

⁹Toate acestea le-am văzut, şi mi-am îndreptat inima spre tot ce se face supt soare. Este o vreme cînd un om stăpîneşte peste alt om, ca să -l facă nenorocit.

⁹All this have I seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.

¹⁰Atunci am văzut pe cei răi îngropaţi şi ducîndu-se la odihna lor, iar pe ceice lucraseră cu neprihănire depărtîndu-se de locul sfînt şi uitaţi în cetate. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!

¹⁰So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.

¹¹Pentrucă nu se aduce repede la îndeplinire hotărîrea dată împotriva faptelor rele, de aceea este plină inima fiilor oamenilor de dorinţa să facă rău.

¹¹Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

¹²Totuş, măcarcă păcătosul face de o sută de ori răul şi stăruieşte multă vreme în el, eu ştiu că fericirea este pentru cei ce se tem de Dumnezeu, şi au frică de El.

¹²Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.

¹³Dar cel rău, nu este fericit şi nu-şi va lungi zilele, întocmai ca umbra, pentru că n'are frică de Dumnezeu.

¹³But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow; because he doesn’t fear God.

¹⁴Este o deşertăciune care se petrece pe pămînt: şi anume sînt oameni neprihăniţi, cărora le merge ca şi celor răi cari fac fapte rele, şi sînt răi, cărora le merge ca şi celor neprihăniţi, cari fac fapte bune. Eu zic că şi aceasta este o deşertăciune.

¹⁴There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

¹⁵Am lăudat dar petrecerea, pentru că nu este altă fericire pentru om supt soare de cît să mănînce şi să bea şi să se veselească; iată ce trebuie să -l însoţească în mijlocul muncii lui, în zilele vieţii pe cari i le dă Dumnezeu supt soare.

¹⁵Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

¹⁶Cînd mi-am pus inima să cunosc înţelepciunea şi să mă uit cu băgare de seamă la truda pe care şi -o dă omul pe pămînt-căci omul nu vede somn cu ochii, nici zi nici noapte, -

¹⁶When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes),

¹⁷am văzut atunci toată lucrarea lui Dumnezeu, am văzut că omul nu poate să pătrundă ce se face supt soare; oricît s'ar trudi el să cerceteze, tot nu va putea afla; şi chiar dacă înţeleptul ar zice că a ajuns să înţeleagă, tot nu poate să găsească.

¹⁷then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.
