¹În adevăr, Melhisedec acesta, împăratul Salemului, preot al Dumnezeului Prea Înalt, -care a întîmpinat pe Avraam cînd acesta se întorcea dela măcelul împăraţilor, care l -a binecuvîntat,

¹For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

²care a primit dela Avraam zeciuială din tot, -care, după însemnarea numelui său, este întîi, ,,Împărat al neprihănirii``, apoi şi ,,Împărat al Salemului``, adică ,,Împărat al păcii``;

²to whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace;

³fără tată, fără mamă, fără spiţă de neam, neavînd nici început al zilelor, nici sfîrşit al vieţii, -dar care a fost asemănat cu Fiul lui Dumnezeu, -rămîne preot în veac.

³without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God), remains a priest continually.

⁴Vedeţi bine dar cît de mare a fost el, dacă pînă şi patriarhul Avraam i -a dat zeciuială din prada de război!

⁴Now consider how great this man was, to whom even Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the best spoils.

⁵Aceia dintre fiii lui Levi, cari îndeplinesc slujba de preoţi, după Lege, au poruncă să ia zeciuială dela norod, adică dela fraţii lor, cu toate că şi ei se coboară din Avraam.

⁵They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the body of Abraham,

⁶Iar el, care nu se cobora din familia lor, a luat zeciuială dela Avraam, şi a binecuvîntat pe cel ce avea făgăduinţele.

⁶but he whose genealogy is not counted from them has accepted tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises.

⁷Dar fără îndoială că cel mai mic este binecuvîntat de cel mai mare.

⁷But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.

⁸Şi apoi aici, cei ce iau zeciuială, sînt nişte oameni muritori; pe cînd acolo, o ia cineva, despre care se mărturiseşte că este viu.

⁸Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives.

⁹Mai mult, însuş Levi, care ia zeciuială, a plătit zeciuiala, ca să zicem aşa, prin Avraam;

⁹We can say that through Abraham even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes,

¹⁰căci era încă în coapsele strămoşului său, cînd a întîmpinat Melhisedec pe Avraam.

¹⁰for he was yet in the body of his father when Melchizedek met him.

¹¹Dacă, dar, desăvîrşirea ar fi fost cu putinţă prin preoţia Leviţilor, -căci supt preoţia aceasta a primit poporul Legea-ce nevoie mai era să se ridice un alt preot ,,după rînduiala lui Melhisedec``, şi nu după rînduiala lui Aaron?

¹¹Now if there were perfection through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

¹²Pentrucă, odată schimbată preoţia, trebuia numaidecît să aibă loc şi o schimbare a Legii.

¹²For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also in the law.

¹³În adevăr, Acela despre care sînt zise aceste lucruri, face parte dintr'o altă seminţie, din care nimeni n'a slujit altarului.

¹³For he of whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.

¹⁴Căci este vădit că Domnul nostru a ieşit din Iuda, seminţie, despre care Moise n'a zis nimic cu privire la preoţie.

¹⁴For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, about which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.

¹⁵Lucrul acesta se face şi mai luminos cînd vedem ridicîndu-se, după asemănarea lui Melhisedec, un alt preot,

¹⁵This is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there arises another priest,

¹⁶pus nu prin legea unei porunci pămînteşti, ci prin puterea unei vieţi neperitoare.

¹⁶who has been made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life:

¹⁷Fiindcă iată ce se mărturiseşte despre El: ,,Tu eşti preot în veac, după rînduiala lui Melhisedec``.

¹⁷for it is testified, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” Psalm 110:4

¹⁸Astfel, pe deoparte, se desfiinţează aici o poruncă de mai înainte, din pricina neputinţei şi zădărniciei ei-

¹⁸For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and uselessness

¹⁹căci Legea n'a făcut nimic desăvîrşit-şi pe de alta, se pune în loc o nădejde mai bună, prin care ne apropiem de Dumnezeu.

¹⁹(for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

²⁰Şi fiindcă lucrul acesta nu s'a făcut fără jurămînt, -

²⁰Inasmuch as he was not made priest without the taking of an oath

²¹căci, pe cînd Leviţii se făceau preoţi fără jurămînt, Isus S'a făcut preot prin jurămîntul Celui ce I -a zis: ,,Domnul a jurat, şi nu Se va căi: ,Tu eşti preot în veac, după rînduiala lui Melhisedec`, -

²¹(for they indeed have been made priests without an oath), but he with an oath by him that says of him, “The Lord swore and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’” Psalm 110:4

²²prin chiar faptul acesta, El s'a făcut chezăşul unui legămînt mai bun.

²²By so much, Jesus has become the collateral of a better covenant.

²³Mai mult, acolo au fost preoţi în mare număr, pentrucă moartea îi împiedica să rămînă pururea.

²³Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.

²⁴Dar El, fiindcă rămîne ,,în veac``, are o preoţie, care nu poate trece dela unul la altul.

²⁴But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable.

²⁵De aceea şi poate să mîntuiască în chip desăvîrşit pe cei ce se apropie de Dumnezeu prin El, pentrucă trăieşte pururea ca să mijlocească pentru ei.

²⁵Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

²⁶Şi tocmai un astfel de Mare Preot ne trebuia: sfînt, nevinovat, fără pată, despărţit de păcătoşi, şi înălţat mai pe sus de ceruri,

²⁶For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

²⁷care n'are nevoie, ca ceilalţi mari preoţi, să aducă jertfe în fiecare zi, întîi pentru păcatele sale, şi apoi pentru păcatele norodului, căci lucrul acesta l -a făcut odată pentru totdeauna, cînd S'a adus jertfă pe Sine însuş.

²⁷who doesn’t need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

²⁸În adevăr, Legea pune mari preoţi pe nişte oameni supuşi slăbiciunii; dar cuvîntul jurămîntului, făcut după ce a fost dată Legea, pune pe Fiul, care este desăvîrşit pentru vecinicie.

²⁸For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.
