¹Iată cuprinsul epistolei, pe care a trimis -o proorocul Ieremia, din Ierusalim, către rămăşiţa bătrînilor din robie, preoţilor, proorocilor, şi întregului popor, pe cari -i dusese în robie Nebucadneţar, din Ierusalim la Babilon,

¹Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

²după ce împăratul Ieconia, împărăteasa, famenii dregători, căpeteniile lui Iuda şi ale Ierusalimului, lemnarii şi ferarii au părăsit Ierusalimul.

²(after that Jeconiah the king, the queen mother, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths, had departed from Jerusalem),

³Le -a trimes -o prin Eleasa, fiul lui Şafan, şi prin Ghemaria, fiul lui Hilchia, trimeşi la Babilon de Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, la Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului. Ea cuprindea următoarele:

³by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying,

⁴,,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, către toţi prinşii de război, pe cari i-am dus din Ierusalim la Babilon:

⁴Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, to all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:

⁵,Zidiţi case, şi locuiţi-le; sădiţi grădini şi mîncaţi din roadele lor!

⁵Build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat their fruit.

⁶Luaţi-vă neveste, şi faceţi fii şi fiice; însuraţi-vă fiii, şi măritaţi-vă fetele, să facă fii şi fiice, ca să vă înmulţiţi acolo unde sînteţi, şi să nu vă împuţinaţi.

⁶Take wives, and father sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there, and don’t be diminished.

⁷Urmăriţi binele cetăţii, în care v'am dus în robie, şi rugaţi-vă Domnului pentru ea, pentrucă fericirea voastră atîrnă de fericirea ei!

⁷Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in its peace you shall have peace.

⁸Căci aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ,Nu vă lăsaţi amăgiţi de proorocii voştri, cari sînt în mijlocul vostru, nici de ghicitorii voştri; n'ascultaţi nici de visătorii voştri, ale căror visuri voi le pricinuiţi!

⁸For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Don’t let your prophets who are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

⁹Căci ei vă proorocesc minciuni în Numele Meu. Eu nu i-am trimes, zice Domnul.``

⁹For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, says Yahweh.

¹⁰Dar iată ce zice Domnul: ,,De îndată ce vor trece şaptezeci de ani ai Babilonului, Îmi voi aduce aminte de voi, şi voi împlini faţă de voi făgăduinţa Mea cea bună, aducîndu-vă înapoi în locul acesta.

¹⁰For thus says Yahweh, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

¹¹Căci Eu ştiu gîndurile, pe cari le am cu privire la voi, zice Domnul, gînduri de pace şi nu de nenorocire, ca să vă dau un viitor şi o nădejde.

¹¹For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

¹²Voi Mă veţi chema, şi veţi pleca; Mă veţi ruga, şi vă voi asculta.

¹²You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

¹³Mă veţi căuta, şi Mă veţi găsi, dacă Mă veţi căuta cu toată inima.

¹³You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

¹⁴Mă voi lăsa să fiu găsit de voi, zice Domnul, şi voi aduce înapoi pe prinşii voştri de război; vă voi strînge din toate neamurile şi din toate locurile, în cari v'am izgonit, zice Domnul, şi vă voi aduce înapoi în locul de unde v'am dus în robie.``

¹⁴I will be found by you, says Yahweh, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you, says Yahweh; and I will bring you again to the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.

¹⁵,,Totuş voi ziceţi: ,Dumnezeu ne -a ridicat prooroci în Babilon!``

¹⁵Because you have said, Yahweh has raised us up prophets in Babylon;

¹⁶,,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul asupra împăratului, care şade pe scaunul de domnie al lui David, asupra întregului popor, care locuieşte în cetatea aceasta, asupra fraţilor voştri, cari n'au mers cu voi în robie:

¹⁶thus says Yahweh concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven’t gone forth with you into captivity;

¹⁷aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor: ,Iată, voi trimete între ei sabie, foamete şi ciumă, şi -i voi face ca nişte smochine grozave cari, de rele ce sînt, nu se pot mînca.

¹⁷thus says Yahweh of Armies; Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that can’t be eaten, they are so bad.

¹⁸Îi voi urmări cu sabie, cu foamete şi cu ciumă, îi voi face o pricină de spaimă pentru toate împărăţiile pămîntului, de blestem, de pustiire, de batjocură şi de ocară printre toate neamurile pe unde îi voi izgoni,

¹⁸I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations where I have driven them;

¹⁹pentru că n'au ascultat cuvintele Mele, zice Domnul, ei, cărora în nenumărate rînduri le-am trimes pe robii Mei proorocii; dar n'aţi vrut să ascultaţi, zice Domnul.``

¹⁹because they have not listened to my words, says Yahweh, with which I sent to them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear, says Yahweh.

²⁰,,Voi însă, ascultaţi Cuvîntul Domnului, voi toţi, prinşii de război, pe cari v'am trimes din Ierusalim în Babilon!

²⁰Hear therefore the word of Yahweh, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

²¹Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, despre Ahab, fiul lui Colaia, şi despre Zedechia, fiul lui Maaseia, cari vă proorocesc minciuni în Numele Meu: ,Iată, îi dau în mînile lui Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului; şi -i va omorî supt ochii voştri.

²¹Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall kill them before your eyes;

²²Vor sluji ca prilej de blestem, între toţi prinşii de război ai lui Iuda cari sînt la Babilon. Şi se va zice: ,Să-ţi facă Domnul ca lui Zedechia şi ca lui Ahab, pe cari împăratul Babilonului i -a fript în foc!`

²²and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

²³Şi lucrul acesta se va întîmpla pentru că au făcut o mişelie în Israel, preacurvind cu nevestele aproapelui lor, şi pentru că au spus minciuni în Numele Meu, cînd Eu nu le dădusem nici o poruncă. Ştiu lucrul acesta, şi sînt martor, zice Domnul.``

²³because they have worked folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I didn’t command them; and I am he who knows, and am witness, says Yahweh.

²⁴,,Iar lui Şemaia, Nehelamitul, să -i spui:

²⁴Concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying,

²⁵,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ,Tu ai trimes în numele tău întregului popor din Ierusalim, lui Ţefania, fiul lui Maaseia, preotul, şi tuturor preoţilor, o scrisoare cu următorul cuprins:

²⁵Thus speaks Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, saying, Because you have sent letters in your own name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

²⁶,Domnul te -a pus preot în locul preotului Iehoiada, ca să priveghezi în Casa Domnului peste toţi nebunii şi peste toţi cei ce se dau drept prooroci, că să -i arunci în butuci şi în fiare.

²⁶Yahweh has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Yahweh, for every man who is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.

²⁷Acum, pentruce nu pedepseşti pe Ieremia din Anatot, care prooroceşte printre voi?

²⁷Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet to you,

²⁸Ba încă a trimes chiar să ne spună în Babilon: ,Robia va fi lungă; zidiţi case, şi locuiţi-le; sădiţi grădini, şi mîncaţi din roadele lor!`` -

²⁸because he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long: build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat their fruit?

²⁹(Preotul Ţefania citise în adevăr scrisoarea aceasta în faţa proorocului Ieremia.) -

²⁹Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

³⁰Şi Cuvîntul Domnului a vorbit lui Ieremia astfel:

³⁰Then came the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah, saying,

³¹,,Trimete să spună tuturor celor din robie: ,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul despre Şemaia, Nehelamitul: ,Pentrucă Şemaia vă prooroceşte, fără să -l fi trimes Eu, şi vă însuflă o încredere mincinoasă,

³¹Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus says Yahweh concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I didn’t send him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie;

³²iată ce zice Domnul: ,Voi pedepsi pe Şemaia, Nehelamitul, şi sămînţa lui: niciunul din ai lui nu va locui în mijlocul poporului acestuia, şi nu va vedea binele pe care -l voi face poporului Meu, zice Domnul; căci el a propovăduit răzvrătire împotriva Domnului.``

³²therefore thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he see the good that I will do to my people, says Yahweh, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh.
