¹Domnul a vorbit lui Moise, în cîmpia Moabului, lîngă Iordan, în faţa Ierihonului. Şi a zis:

¹Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,

²,,Porunceşte copiilor lui Israel, să dea Leviţilor, din moştenirea pe care o vor avea, nişte cetăţi în cari să poată locui. Să mai daţi Leviţilor şi un loc gol împrejurul acestor cetăţi.

²“Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and you shall give suburbs for the cities around them to the Levites.

³Cetăţile să fie ale lor, ca să locuiască în ele; iar locurile goale să fie pentru vitele lor, pentru averile lor şi pentru toate dobitoacele lor.

³The cities shall they have to dwell in; and their suburbs shall be for their livestock, and for their substance, and for all their animals.

⁴Locurile goale din jurul cetăţilor pe cari le veţi da Leviţilor, să aibă, începînd dela zidul cetăţii în afară, o mie de coţi de jur împrejur.

⁴“The suburbs of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits around it.

⁵Să măsuraţi afară din cetate, două mii de coţi în partea de răsărit, două mii de coţi în partea de miazăzi, două mii de coţi în partea de apus, şi două mii de coţi în partea de miază noapte, aşa în cît cetatea să fie la mijloc. Acestea să fie locurile goale din jurul cetăţilor lor.

⁵You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.

⁶Dintre cetăţile pe cari le veţi da Leviţilor, şase să fie cetăţi de scăpare unde va putea să fugă ucigaşul, şi afară de acestea, să le mai daţi alte patruzeci şi două de cetăţi.

⁶“The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the manslayer to flee to: and besides them you shall give forty-two cities.

⁷Toate cetăţile pe cari le veţi da Leviţilor să fie patruzeci şi opt de cetăţi, împreună cu locurile lor goale.

⁷All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their suburbs.

⁸Cetăţile pe cari le veţi da din moşiile copiilor lui Israel să fie date mai multe de cei ce au mai multe, şi mai puţine de ceice au mai puţine; fiecare să dea Leviţilor din cetăţile lui după moştenirea pe care o va avea.``

⁸Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many; and from the few you shall take few: everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give of his cities to the Levites.”

⁹Domnul a vorbit lui Moise, şi a zis:

⁹Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹⁰,,Vorbeşte copiilor lui Israel şi spune-le: ,Cînd veţi trece Iordanul şi veţi intra în ţara Canaanului,

¹⁰“Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

¹¹să vă alegeţi nişte cetăţi cari să vă fie cetăţi de scăpare, unde să poată scăpa ucigaşul care va omorî pe cineva fără voie.

¹¹then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

¹²Aceste cetăţi să vă slujească drept cetăţi de scăpare împotriva răzbunătorului sîngelui, pentruca ucigaşul să nu fie omorît înainte de a se înfăţişa în faţa adunării ca să fie judecat.

¹²The cities shall be to you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer not die, until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

¹³Din cetăţile pe cari le veţi da, şase să vă fie cetăţi de scăpare.

¹³The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge.

¹⁴Să daţi trei cetăţi dincoace de Iordan, şi trei cetăţi în ţara Canaanului: acestea să vă fie cetaţi de scăpare.

¹⁴You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and you shall give three cities in the land of Canaan; they shall be cities of refuge.

¹⁵Aceste şase cetăţi să fie cetăţi de scăpare pentru copiii lui Israel, pentru străin şi pentru celce locuieşte în mijlocul vostru: acolo va putea să scape orice om care va ucide pe cineva fără voie.

¹⁵For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the foreigner living among them, shall these six cities be for refuge; that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

¹⁶Dacă un om loveşte pe aproapele său cu o unealtă de fer, şi acesta moare, este un ucigaş: ucigaşul să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

¹⁶“‘But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁷Dacă -l loveşte cu o piatră pe care o ţine în mînă, de care poate muri, şi moare, este un ucigaş: ucigaşul să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

¹⁷If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁸Dacă -l loveşte cu vreo unealtă de lemn pe care o ţine în mînă, de care poate muri, şi moare, este un ucigaş; ucigaşul să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

¹⁸Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁹Răzbunătorul sîngelui să omoare pe ucigaş; cînd îl va întîlni, să -l omoare.

¹⁹The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death: when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

²⁰Dacă un om împinge pe aproapele său din ură, sau dacă -l pîndeşte şi arungă ceva asupra lui şi moare,

²⁰If he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died,

²¹sau dacă -l loveşte cu mîna din vrăjmăşie, şi moare, cel ce l -a lovit să fie pedepsit cu moartea; este un ucigaş: răzbunătorul sîngelui să omoare pe ucigaş, cînd îl va întîlni.

²¹or in enmity struck him with his hand, so that he died; he who struck him shall surely be put to death; he is a murderer: the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meets him.

²²Dar dacă un om împinge pe aproapele lui fără veste şi nu din vrăjmăşie, sau dacă aruncă ceva asupra lui fără să -l fi pîndit,

²²“‘But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait,

²³sau dacă aruncă asupra lui din nebăgare de seamă o piatră care -i poate pricinui moartea, şi moare, fără să -l urască şi fără să caute să -i facă rău:

²³or with any stone, by which a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm;

²⁴Iată legile după cari va judeca adunarea între cel ce l -a lovit şi răzbunătorul sîngelui.

²⁴then the congregation shall judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances;

²⁵Adunarea va izbăvi pe ucigaş din mîna răzbunătorului sîngelui, şi -l va face să se întoarcă în cetatea de scăpare unde fugise. Să locuiască acolo pînă la moartea marelui preot care este uns cu untdelemn sfînt.

²⁵and the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he was fled: and he shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

²⁶Dacă ucigaşul iese din hotarul cetăţii de scăpare unde fugise,

²⁶“‘But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he flees,

²⁷şi dacă răzbunătorul sîngelui îl întîlneşte afară din hotarul cetăţii de scăpare şi ucide pe ucigaş, nu va fi vinovat de omor.

²⁷and the avenger of blood find him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kill the manslayer; he shall not be guilty of blood,

²⁸Căci ucigaşul trebuia să locuiască în cetatea lui de scăpare pînă la moartea marelui preot; şi după moartea marelui preot, putea să se întoarcă la moşia lui.

²⁸because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return into the land of his possession.

²⁹Iată poruncile de drept pentru voi şi pentru urmaşii voştri, în toate locurile în cari veţi locui.

²⁹“‘These things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

³⁰Dacă un om omoară pe cineva, ucigaşul să fie omorît, pe mărturia martorilor. Un singur martur nu va fi deajuns ca să fie osîndit cineva la moarte.

³⁰“‘Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain at the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person that he die.

³¹Să nu primiţi răscumpărare pentru viaţa unui ucigaş vinovat de moarte, ci să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

³¹“‘Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death.

³²Să nu primiţi răscumpărare pentru cel ce trebue să fugă în cetatea lui de scăpare, ca să se întoarcă să locuiască în ţară pînă la moartea preotului.

³²“‘You shall take no ransom for him who is fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

³³Să nu pîngăriţi ţara unde veţi fi, căci sîngele celui nevinovat pîngăreşte ţara; şi ispăşirea sîngelui vărsat în ţară nu se va putea face decît prin sîngele celui ce -l va vărsa.

³³“‘So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: for blood, it pollutes the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him who shed it.

³⁴Să nu pîngăriţi deci ţara în care veţi merge să locuiţi, şi în mijlocul căreia voi locui şi Eu, căci Eu sînt Domnul, care locuieşte în mijlocul copiilor lui Israel.``

³⁴You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell: for I, Yahweh, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel.’”
