¹The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

²pentru cunoaşterea înţelepciunii şi învăţăturii, pentru înţelegerea cuvintelor minţii;

²to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;

³pentru căpătarea învăţăturilor de bun simţ, de dreptate, de judecată şi de nepărtinire;

³to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;

⁴ca să dea celor neîncercaţi agerime de minte, tînărului cunoştinţă şi chibzuinţă, -

⁴to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man:

⁵să asculte însă şi înţeleptul, şi îşi va mări ştiinţa, şi cel priceput, şi va căpăta iscusinţă-

⁵that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

⁶pentru prinderea înţelesului unei pilde sau al unui cuvînt adînc, înţelesul cuvintelor înţelepţilor şi al cuvintelor lor cu tîlc.

⁶to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

⁷Frica Domnului este începutul ştiinţei; dar nebunii nesocotesc înţelepciunea şi învăţătura.

⁷The fear of Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

⁸Ascultă, fiule, învăţătura tatălui tău, şi nu lepăda îndrumările mamei tale!

⁸My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:

⁹Căci ele sînt o cunună plăcută pe capul tău, şi un lanţ de aur la gîtul tău.

⁹for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

¹⁰Fiule, dacă nişte păcătoşi vor să te amăgească, nu te lăsa cîştigat de ei!

¹¹Dacă-ţi vor zice: ,,Vino cu noi! Haidem să întindem curse ca să vărsăm sînge, să întindem fără temei laţuri celui nevinovat;

¹¹If they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

¹²haidem să -i înghiţim de vii, ca locuinţa morţilor, şi întregi, ca pe cei ce se pogoară în groapă;

¹²let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. , and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

¹³vom găsi tot felul de lucruri scumpe, şi ne vom umplea casele cu pradă;

¹³We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with spoil.

¹⁴vei avea şi tu partea ta la fel cu noi, o pungă vom avea cu toţii!`` -

¹⁴You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”

¹⁵fiule, să nu porneşti la drum cu ei, abate-ţi piciorul de pe cărarea lor!

¹⁵My son, don’t walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path,

¹⁶Căci picioarele lor aleargă la rău, şi se grăbesc să verse sînge.

¹⁶for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

¹⁷Dar degeaba se aruncă laţul înaintea ochilor tuturor păsărilor;

¹⁸căci ei întind curse tocmai împotriva sîngelui lor, şi sufletului lor îşi întind ei laţuri.

¹⁸but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.

¹⁹Aceasta este soarta tuturor celor lacomi de cîştig: lăcomia aduce pierderea celor ce se dedau la ea.

¹⁹So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

²⁰Înţelepciunea strigă pe uliţe, îşi înalţă glasul în pieţe:

²⁰Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.

²¹strigă unde e zarva mai mare; la porţi, în cetate, îşi spune cuvintele ei:

²¹She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:

²²,,Pînă cînd veţi iubi prostia, proştilor? Pînă cînd le va plăcea batjocoritorilor batjocura, şi vor urî nebunii ştiinţa?

²²“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

²³Întoarceţi-vă să ascultaţi mustrările mele! Iată, voi turna duhul meu peste voi, vă voi face cunoscut cuvintele mele...

²³Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

²⁴Fiindcă eu chem şi voi vă împotriviţi, fiindcă îmi întind mîna şi nimeni ia seama,

²⁴Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;

²⁵fiindcă lepădaţi toate sfaturile mele, şi nu vă plac mustrările mele,

²⁵but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

²⁶de aceea şi eu, voi rîde cînd veţi fi în vreo nenorocire, îmi voi bate joc de voi cînd vă va apuca groaza,

²⁶I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;

²⁷cînd vă va apuca groaza ca o furtună, şi cînd vă va învălui nenorocirea ca un vîrtej, cînd va da peste voi necazul şi strîmtorarea.

²⁷when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.

²⁸Atunci mă vor chema, şi nu voi răspunde; mă vor căuta, şi nu mă vor găsi.

²⁸Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

²⁹Pentrucă au urît ştiinţa, şi n'au ales frica Domnului,

²⁹because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

³⁰pentrucă n'au iubit sfaturile mele, şi au nesocotit toate mustrările mele.

³⁰They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

³¹De aceea se vor hrăni cu roada umbletelor lor, şi se vor sătura cu sfaturile lor.

³¹Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

³²Căci împotrivirea proştilor îi ucide, şi liniştea nebunilor îi pierde;

³²For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.

³³dar cel ce m'ascultă va locui fără grijă, va trăi liniştit şi fără să se teamă de vreun rău.

³³But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
