1Sin moj, nauka mojega ne zabi, temuč zapovedi moje naj hrani srce tvoje;
1My son, don’t forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:
2kajti dni dolgost in življenje mnogoletno in mir ti dodelé.
2for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you.
3Milost in resnica naj te ne zapustita; priveži ju okrog grla svojega, zapiši ju na srca svojega deščico:
3Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.
4tako dosežeš milost in uspeh najboljši, pred očmi Božjimi in človeškimi.
4So you will find favor, and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5Upaj v GOSPODA iz vsega srca svojega, na umnost svojo pa se ne zanašaj.
5Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
6Na vseh potih svojih ga spoznavaj, in on ravne naredi steze tvoje.
6In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
7Ne štej sam sebe za modrega; boj se GOSPODA in ogiblji se hudega.
7Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil.
8To bode zdravilo životu tvojemu in krepilo tvojim kostem.
8It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones.
9Časti GOSPODA z blagom svojim in s prvinami vseh pridelkov svojih:
9Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase:
10tako se bodo polnile z obilostjo žitnice tvoje, in mošt poteče zvrhoma iz kadi tvojih.
10so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
11Karanja GOSPODOVEGA, sin moj, ne zametaj in strahovanje njegovo naj ti ne preseda:
11My son, don’t despise Yahweh’s discipline, neither be weary of his reproof:
12zakaj kogar GOSPOD ljubi, tega strahuje, in to kakor oče sina, katerega ima rad.
12for whom Yahweh loves, he reproves; even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.
13Blagor človeku, ki doseza modrost, in človeku, ki napreduje v umnosti!
13Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding.
14Boljša je namreč nje pridobitev od pridobljenega srebra in dobiček pri njej dražji od zlata.
14For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold.
15Dražja je od biserov, in vse, kar te veseli, se ne more enačiti ž njo.
15She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her.
16Dni dolgost je v desnici njeni, v levici njeni bogastvo in čast.
16Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor.
17Pota njena so miline pota in vse steze njene mir.
17Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace.
18Drevo življenja imajo, ki se nje poprimejo, in srečen je, kdor se je drži.
18She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her.
19GOSPOD je z modrostjo ustanovil zemljo, nebesa je postavil z umnostjo.
19By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.
20Po znanju njegovem so se razklala brezna in oblaki kapljajo roso.
20By his knowledge, the depths were broken up, and the skies drop down the dew.
21Sin moj, naj ti to ne izgine izpred oči: hrani zdravo pamet in premišljenost,
21My son, let them not depart from your eyes. Keep sound wisdom and discretion:
22in bodeta življenje duši tvoji in lepotina grlu tvojemu.
22so they will be life to your soul, and grace for your neck.
23Tedaj boš stopal brez skrbi po poti svoji in noga tvoja se ne zadene.
23Then you shall walk in your way securely. Your foot won’t stumble.
24Ko ležeš, ne bo te strah, ležal boš in sladko spal.
24When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.
25Ne boj se naglega strahú, ne pustošenja brezbožnih, ko prihaja.
25Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes:
26Zakaj GOSPOD bode upanje tvoje in ohrani nogo tvojo, da se ne ujame.
26for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.
27Ne odtezaj dobrotnosti njim, katerim je je treba, ko jo more storiti roka tvoja.
27Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.
28Ne reci bližnjemu svojemu: „Pojdi, in zopet pridi, in jutri ti dam,“ ko imaš to pri sebi.
28Don’t say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again; tomorrow I will give it to you,” when you have it by you.
29Ne snuj zlega zoper bližnjega svojega, ko stanuje brez skrbi s teboj.
29Don’t devise evil against your neighbor, since he dwells securely by you.
30Ne prepiraj se z nobenim človekom brez sile, ako ti ni hudega storil.
30Don’t strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm.
31Ne zavidaj nobenemu silovitniku in ne izvoli nobenih potov njegovih.
31Don’t envy the man of violence. Choose none of his ways.
32Kajti gnusoba je GOSPODU izprijenec, pri poštenih pa je skrivnost njegova.
32For the perverse is an abomination to Yahweh, but his friendship is with the upright.
33Prokletstvo GOSPODOVO je na brezbožnega hiši, pravičnih bivališče pa blagoslavlja.
33Yahweh’s curse is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the habitation of the righteous.
34Res, zasmehovalce on zasmehuje, krotkim pa daje milost.Modri podedujejo slavo, neumneže pa razglasi sramota.
34Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.
35Modri podedujejo slavo, neumneže pa razglasi sramota.
35The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.
