¹Wakati achipfuura, akaona munhu bofu kubva pakuberekwa.

¹And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,

²Vadzidzi vake ndokumubvunza, vachiti: Rabhi*, ndiani wakatadza, uyu kana vabereki vake, kuti aberekwe ari bofu?

²and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?`

³Jesu akapindura akati: Uyu haana kutadza, kana vabereki vake; asi kuti mabasa aMwari aoneswe maari.

³Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;

⁴Ndinofanira kushanda mabasa ewakandituma achiri masikati; usiku hwunouya, apo pasina munhu angagona kushanda.

⁴it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: —

⁵Kana ndichiri panyika, ndiri chiedza chenyika.

⁵when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.`

⁶Wakati areva izvi, akapfira pasi, akaita dope nemate, akazodza dope pameso ebofu,

⁶These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

⁷akati kwaari: Enda unoshamba mudziva reSiroami (zvinoshandurwa kuti: Wakatumwa). Naizvozvo wakaenda akashamba, akadzoka achiona.

⁷`Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,` which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;

⁸Naizvozvo vavakidzani nevaimuona pakutanga kuti wakange ari bofu, vakati: Haazi iye uyu waigara achipemha here?

⁸the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?`

⁹Vamwe vakati: Uyu ndiye; asi vamwe vakati: Wakaita saiye. Iye akati: Ndini.

⁹others said — `This is he;` and others — `He is like to him;` he himself said, — `I am [he].`

¹⁰Naizvozvo vakati kwaari: Meso ako akazarurwa sei?

¹⁰They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?`

¹¹Iye akapindura akati: Munhu unonzi Jesu wakaita dope, akazodza meso angu, akati kwandiri: Enda kudziva reSiroami undoshamba. Zvino ndikaenda ndikashamba, ndikaonazve.

¹¹he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;`

¹²Naizvozvo vakati kwaari: Iye uripi? Akati: Handizivi.

¹²they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?` he saith, `I have not known.`

¹³Vakamuisa kuvaFarisi, iye waimbova bofu.

¹³They bring him to the Pharisees who once [was] blind,

¹⁴Zvino raiva sabata apo Jesu akaita dope, akasvinudza meso ake.

¹⁴and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

¹⁵Naizvozvo zvekare vaFarisi vakamubvunzawo, kuti wakaonazve sei. Akati kwavari: Waisa dope pameso angu ndikashamba, ndoona.

¹⁵Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash — and I see.`

¹⁶Naizvozvo vamwe vevaFarisi vakati: Munhu uyu haabvi kuna Mwari, nekuti haachengeti sabata. Vamwe vakati: Munhu uri mutadzi ungaita sei zviratidzo zvakadai? Kukava nekupesana pakati pavo.

¹⁶Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;` others said, `How is a man — a sinful one — able to do such signs?` and there was a division among them.

¹⁷Vakatizve kubofu: Iwe unoti kudini pamusoro pake, sezvo asvinudza meso ako? Akati: Muporofita.

¹⁷They said to the blind man again, `Thou — what dost thou say of him — that he opened thine eyes?`

¹⁸Zvino vaJudha havana kutenda pamusoro pake, kuti wakange ari bofu, akaonazve, kusvikira vadana vabereki vewakaonazve,

¹⁸and he said — `He is a prophet.` The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,

¹⁹naizvovo zvino vakavabvunza, vachiti: Uyu mwanakomana wenyu imwi wamunoti wakaberekwa ari bofu here? Ikozvino woona sei?

¹⁹and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?`

²⁰Vabereki vake vakavapindura vakati: Tinoziva kuti uyu mwanakomana wedu, uye kuti wakaberekwa ari bofu;

²⁰His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

²¹asi kuti ikozvino woona sei, hatizivi; kana ndiani wasvinudza meso ake, isu hatizivi; iye wayaruka, mubvunzei, iye pachake uchazvitaurira.

²¹and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.`

²²Vabereki vake vakareva izvi, nekuti vaitya vaJudha; nekuti vaJudha vakange vatotenderana kuti kana ani nani unobvuma kuti ndiye Kristu, abudiswe musinagoge.

²²These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him — Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

²³Naizvozvo vabereki vake vakati: Wayaruka, mubvunzei.

²³because of this his parents said — `He is of age, ask him.`

²⁴Naizvozvo vakadana rwechipiri iye munhu wakange ari bofu, vakati kwaari: Ipa Mwari rumbidzo; isu tinoziva kuti munhu uyu mutadzi.

²⁴They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;`

²⁵Naizvozvo iye akapindura achiti: Kunyange ari mutadzi handizivi; chinhu chimwe chandinoziva, kuti ndaiva bofu, ikozvino ndoona.

²⁵he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner — I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.`

²⁶Zvino vakati kwaarizve: Wakaitei kwauri? Wakasvinudza meso ako sei?

²⁶And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?`

²⁷Akavapindura, akati: Ndadokuudzai, asi hamuna kunzwa, munodirei kunzwa zvekare? Nemwi munoda kuva vadzidzi vake kanhi?

²⁷He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?`

²⁸Naizvozvo vakamutuka, vakati: Ndiwe mudzidzi wake; asi isu tiri vadzidzi vaMozisi.

²⁸They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses` disciples;

²⁹Isu tinoziva kuti Mwari wakataura kuna Mozisi; asi uyu hatizivi kwaanobva.

²⁹we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one — we have not known whence he is.`

³⁰Munhu akapindura akati kwavari: Nekuti pachinhu ichi pane chinoshamisa, kuti imwi hamuzivi kwaanobva, asi wasvinudza meso angu.

³⁰The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!

³¹Zvino tinoziva kuti Mwari haanzwi vatadzi; asi kana munhu ari mushumiri waMwari, achiita chido chake, uyu unomunzwa.

³¹and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;

³²Kubvira rinhi hakuna kumbonzwika kuti umwe wakasvinudza meso ewakaberekwa ari bofu.

³²from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind;

³³Dai uyu anga asingabvi kuna Mwari, haazaigona kuita chinhu.

³³if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.`

³⁴Vakapindura vakati kwaari: Iwe zvachose wakaberekerwa muzvivi, zvino iwe wotidzidzisa here? Vakamudzingira kunze.

³⁴They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!` and they cast him forth without.

³⁵Jesu akanzwa kuti vamudzingira kunze; akati amuwana, akati kwaari: Iwe unotenda kuMwanakomana waMwari here?

³⁵Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?`

³⁶Iye akapindura akati: Ndiani, Ishe, kuti nditende kwaari?

³⁶he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?`

³⁷Jesu ndokuti kwaari: Newe wamuona, uye ndiye unotaura newe.

³⁷And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;`

³⁸Zvino akati: Ishe ndinotenda; akamunamata.

³⁸and he said, `I believe, sir,` and bowed before him.

³⁹Jesu ndokuti: Kutonga ndiko ini kwandakauyira panyika ino, kuti vasingaoni vaone; nevanoona vave mapofu.

³⁹And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.`

⁴⁰Uye avo vevaFarisi vaiva naye vakanzwa zvinhu izvi, vakati kwaari: Nesu tiri mapofu here?

⁴⁰And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?`

⁴¹Jesu akati kwavari: Dai maiva mapofu, mungadai musina chivi. Asi ikozvino munoti: Tinoona; naizvozvo chivi chenyu chinoramba chiripo.

⁴¹Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say — We see, therefore doth your sin remain.
