¹Därefter tog Elifas från Teman till orda och sade:

¹And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

²Kan en man bereda Gud något gagn, så att det länder honom till gagn, om någon är förståndig?

²Can a man be profitable to ùGod? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

³Har den Allsmäktige någon båtnad av att du är rättfärdig, eller någon vinning av att du vandrar ostraffligt?

³Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain [to him] that thou makest thy ways perfect?

⁴Är det för din gudsfruktans skull som han straffar dig, och som han går med dig till doms?

⁴Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

⁵Har då icke din ondska varit stor, och voro ej dina missgärningar utan ände?

⁵Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

⁶Jo, du tog pant av din broder utan sak, du plundrade de utblottade på deras kläder.

⁶For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

⁷Åt den försmäktande gav du intet vatten att dricka, och den hungrige nekade du bröd.

⁷Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

⁸För den väldige ville du upplåta landet, och den myndige skulle få bo däri,

⁸But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.

⁹men änkor lät du gå med tomma händer, och de faderlösas armar blevo krossade.

⁹Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

¹⁰Därför omgives du nu av snaror och förfäras av plötslig skräck.

¹⁰Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

¹¹ja, av ett mörker där du intet ser, och av vattenflöden som övertäcka dig.

¹¹Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

¹²I himmelens höjde är det ju Gud som har sin boning, och du ser stjärnorna däruppe, huru högt de sitta;

¹²Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

¹³därför tänker du: »Vad kan Gud veta? Skulle han kunna döma, han som bor bortom töcknet?

¹³And thou sayest, What doth ùGod know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

¹⁴Molnen äro ju ett täckelse, så att han intet ser; och på himlarunden är det han har sin gång.»

¹⁴Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

¹⁵Vill du då hålla dig på forntidens väg, där fördärvets män gingo fram,

¹⁵Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?

¹⁶de män som bortrycktes, innan deras tid var ute, och såsom en ström flöt deras grundval bort,

¹⁶Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;

¹⁷de män som sade till Gud: »Vik ifrån oss», ty vad skulle den Allsmäktige kunna göra dem?

¹⁷Who said unto ùGod, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?

¹⁸Det var ju dock han som uppfyllde deras hus med sitt goda. De ogudaktigas rådslag vare fjärran ifrån mig!

¹⁸Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁹De rättfärdiga skola se det och glädja sig, och den oskyldige skall få bespotta dem:

¹⁹The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

²⁰»Ja, nu äro förvisso våra motståndare utrotade, och deras överflöd har elden förtärt.»

²⁰Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

²¹Men sök nu förlikning och frid med honom; därigenom skall lycka falla dig till.

²¹Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

²²Tag emot undervisning av hans mun, och förvara hans ord i ditt hjärta.

²²Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

²³Om du omvänder dig till den Allsmäktige, så bliver du upprättad; men orättfärdighet må du skaffa bort ur din hydda.

²³If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

²⁴Ja kasta din gyllene skatt i stoftet och Ofirs-guldet ibland bäckens stenar,

²⁴And put the precious ore with the dust, and [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

²⁵så bliver den Allsmäktige din gyllene skatt, det ädlaste silver varder han för dig.

²⁵Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

²⁶Ja, då skall du hava din lust i den Allsmäktige och kunna upplyfta ditt ansikte till Gud.

²⁶Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

²⁷När du då beder till honom, skall han höra dig, och de löften du gör skall du få infria.

²⁷Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

²⁸Allt vad du besluter skall då lyckas för dig, och ljus skall skina på dina vägar.

²⁸And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

²⁹Om de leda mot djupet och du då beder: »Uppåt!», så frälsar han mannen som har ödmjukat sig.

²⁹When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

³⁰Ja han räddar och den som ej är fri ifrån skuld; genom dina händers renhet räddas en sådan.

³⁰[Even] him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.
