¹När du sitter till bords med en furste, så besinna väl vad du har framför dig,

¹When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;

²och sätt en kniv på din strupe, om du är alltför hungrig.

²and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

³Var ej lysten efter hans smakliga rätter, ty de äro en bedräglig kost.

³Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.

⁴Möda dig icke för att bliva rik; avstå från att bruka klokskap.

⁴Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:

⁵Låt icke dina blickar flyga efter det som ej har bestånd; ty förvisso gör det sig vingar och flyger sin väg, såsom örnen mot himmelen.

⁵wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.

⁶Ät icke den missunnsammes bröd, och var ej lysten efter hans smakliga rätter;

⁶Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.

⁷ty han förfar efter sina själviska beräkningar. »Ät och drick» kan han val säga till dig, men hans hjärta är icke med dig.

⁷For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.

⁸Den bit du har ätit måste du utspy, och dina vänliga ord har du förspillt.

⁸Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.

⁹Tala icke för en dåres öron, ty han föraktar vad klokt du säger.

⁹Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

¹⁰Flytta icke ett gammalt råmärke, och gör icke intrång på de faderlösas åkrar.

¹⁰Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¹¹Ty deras bördeman är stark; han skall utföra deras sak mot dig.

¹¹for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.

¹²Vänd ditt hjärta till tuktan och dina öron till de ord som giva kunskap.

¹²Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

¹³Låt icke gossen vara utan aga; ty om du slår honom med riset, så bevaras han från döden;

¹³Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:

¹⁴ja, om du slår honom med riset, så räddar du hans själ undan dödsriket.

¹⁴thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

¹⁵Min son, om ditt hjärta bliver vist, så gläder sig ock mitt hjärta;

¹⁵My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;

¹⁶ja, mitt innersta fröjdar sig, när dina läppar tala vad rätt är.

¹⁶and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.

¹⁷Låt icke ditt hjärta avundas syndare, men nitälska för HERRENS fruktan beständigt.

¹⁷Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day;

¹⁸Förvisso har du då en framtid, och ditt hopp varder icke om intet.

¹⁸for surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁹Hör, du min son, och bliv vis, och låt ditt hjärta gå rätta vägar.

¹⁹Thou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.

²⁰Var icke bland vindrinkare, icke bland dem som äro överdådiga i mat.

²⁰Be not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.

²¹Ty drinkare och frossare bliva fattiga, och sömnaktighet giver trasiga kläder.

²¹For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.

²²Hör din fader, som har fött dig, och förakta icke din moder, när hon varder gammal.

²²Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

²³Sök förvärva sanning, och avhänd dig henne icke, sök vishet och tukt och förstånd.

²³Buy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.

²⁴Stor fröjd har den rättfärdiges fader; den som har fått en vis son har glädje av honom.

²⁴The father of a righteous [man] shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise [son] shall have joy of him:

²⁵Må då din fader och din moder få glädje, och må hon som har fött dig kunna fröjda sig.

²⁵let thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.

²⁶Giv mig, min son, ditt hjärta, och låt mina vägar behaga dina ögon.

²⁶My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

²⁷Ty skökan är en djup grop, och nästans hustru är en trång brunn.

²⁷For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

²⁸Ja, såsom en rövare ligger hon på lur och de trolösas antal förökar hon bland människorna.

²⁸She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.

²⁹Var är ve, var är jämmer? Var äro trätor, var är klagan? Var äro sår utan sak? Var äro ögon höljda i dunkel?

²⁹Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?

³⁰Jo, där man länge sitter kvar vid vinet, där man samlas för att pröva kryddade drycker.

³⁰-- They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.

³¹Så se då icke på vinet, att det är så rött, att det giver sådan glans i bägaren, och att det så lätt rinner ned.

³¹Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:

³²På sistone stinger det ju såsom ormen, och likt basilisken sprutar det gift.

³²at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

³³Dina ögon få då skåda sällsamma syner, och ditt hjärta talar förvända ting.

³³Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;

³⁴Det är dig såsom låge du i havets djup, eller såsom svävade du uppe i en mast:

³⁴and thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:

³⁵»De slå mig, men åt vållar mig ingen smärta, de stöta mig, men jag känner det icke. När skall jag då vakna upp, så att jag återigen får skaffa mig sådant?»

³⁵-- ''They have smitten me, [and] I am not sore; they have beaten me, [and] I knew it not. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.''
