¹Och HERREN svarade Job ur stormvinden och sade:

¹Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,

²Vem är du som stämplar vishet såsom mörker, i det att du talar så utan insikt?

²“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

³Omgjorda nu såsom ej man dina länder; jag vill fråga dig, och du må giva mig besked.

³Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!

⁴Var var du, när jag lade jordens grund? Säg det, om du har ett så stort förstånd.

⁴“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.

⁵Vem har fastställt hennes mått -- du vet ju det? Och vem spände sitt mätsnöre ut över henne?

⁵Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?

⁶Var fingo hennes pelare sina fästen, och vem var det som lade hennes hörnsten,

⁶Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

⁷medan morgonstjärnorna tillsammans jublade och alla Guds söner höjde glädjerop?

⁷when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

⁸Och vem satte dörrar för havet, när det föddes och kom ut ur moderlivet,

⁸“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth from the womb,

⁹när jag gav det moln till beklädnad och lät töcken bliva dess linda,

⁹when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,

¹⁰när jag åt det utstakade min gräns och satte bom och dörrar därför,

¹⁰marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,

¹¹och sade: »Härintill skall du komma, men ej vidare, här skola dina stolta böljor lägga sig»?

¹¹and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’

¹²Har du i din tid bjudit dagen att gry eller anvisat åt morgonrodnaden dess plats,

¹²“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place;

¹³där den skulle fatta jorden i dess flikar, så att de ogudaktiga skakades bort därifrån?

¹³that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?

¹⁴Då ändrar den form såsom leran under signetet, och tingen stå fram såsom klädda i skrud;

¹⁴It is changed as clay under the seal, and stands forth as a garment.

¹⁵då berövas de ogudaktiga sitt ljus, och den arm som lyftes för högt brytes sönder.

¹⁵From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.

¹⁶Har du stigit ned till havets källor och vandrat omkring på djupets botten?

¹⁶“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

¹⁷Hava dödens portar avslöjat sig för dig, ja, såg du dödsskuggans portar?

¹⁷Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¹⁸Har du överskådat jordens vidder? Om du känner allt detta, så låt höra.

¹⁸Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all.

¹⁹Vet du vägen dit varest ljuset bor, eller platsen där mörkret har sin boning,

¹⁹“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,

²⁰så att du kan hämta dem ut till deras gräns och finna stigarna som leda till deras hus?

²⁰that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?

²¹Visst kan du det, ty så tidigt blev du ju född, så stort är ju dina dagars antal!

²¹Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!

²²Har du varit framme vid snöns förrådshus? Och haglets förrådshus, du såg väl dem

²²Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail,

²³-- de förråd som jag har sparat till hemsökelsens tid, till stridens och drabbningens dag?

²³which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

²⁴Vet du vägen dit varest ljuset delar sig, dit där stormen sprider sig ut över jorden?

²⁴By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?

²⁵Vem har åt regnflödet öppnat en ränna och banat en väg för tordönets stråle,

²⁵Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm;

²⁶till att sända regn över länder där ingen bor, över öknar, där ingen människa finnes,

²⁶To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;

²⁷till att mätta ödsliga ödemarker och giva växt åt gräsets brodd?

²⁷to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

²⁸Säg om regnet har någon fader, och vem han är, som födde daggens droppar?

²⁸Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?

²⁹Ur vilken moders liv är det isen gick fram, och vem är hon som födde himmelens rimfrost?

²⁹Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it?

³⁰Se, vattnet tätnar och bliver likt sten, så ytan sluter sig samman över djupet.

³⁰The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.

³¹Knyter du tillhopa Sjustjärnornas knippe? Och förmår du att lossa Orions band?

³¹“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?

³²Är det du som, när tid är, för himmelstecknen fram, och som leder Björninnan med hennes ungar?

³²Can you lead forth the constellations in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?

³³Ja, förstår du himmelens lagar, och ordnar du dess välde över jorden?

³³Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?

³⁴Kan du upphöja din röst till molnen och förmå vattenflöden att övertäcka dig?

³⁴“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you?

³⁵Kan du sända ljungeldar åstad, så att de gå, så att de svara dig: »Ja vi äro redo»?

³⁵Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are?’

³⁶Vem har lagt vishet i de mörka molnen, och vem gav förstånd åt järtecknen i luften?

³⁶Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?

³⁷Vem håller med sin vishet räkning på skyarna? Och himmelens läglar, vem häller ut dem,

³⁷Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky,

³⁸medan mullen smälter såsom malm och jordkokorna klibbas tillhopa?

³⁸when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?

³⁹“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

⁴⁰when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?

⁴¹Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
