¹Vad skola vi då säga om Abraham, vår stamfader efter köttet?

¹What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

²Om Abraham blev rättfärdig av gärningar, så har han ju något att berömma sig av. Dock icke inför Gud.

²For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

³Ty vad säger skriften? »Abraham trodde Gud, och det räknades honom till rättfärdighet.»

³For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

⁴Den som håller sig till gärningar, honom bliver lönen tillräknad icke på grund av nåd, utan på grund av förtjänst.

⁴Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

⁵Men den som icke håller sig till gärningar, utan tror på honom som gör den ogudaktige rättfärdig, honom räknas hans tro till rättfärdighet.

⁵But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

⁶Så prisar ock David den människa salig, som Gud tillräknar rättfärdighet, utan gärningar:

⁶Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,

⁷»Saliga äro de vilkas överträdelser äro förlåtna, och vilkas synder äro överskylda.

⁷“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

⁸Salig är den man som Herren icke tillräknar synd.»

⁸Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.” Psalm 32:1-2

⁹Gäller nu detta ordet »salig» de omskurna allenast eller ock de oomskurna? Vi säga ju att »tron räknades Abraham till rättfärdighet».

⁹Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

¹⁰Huru blev den honom då tillräknad? Skedde det sedan han hade blivit omskuren, eller medan han ännu var oomskuren? Det skedde icke sedan han hade blivit omskuren, utan medan han ännu var oomskuren.

¹⁰How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

¹¹Och han undfick omskärelsens tecken såsom ett insegel på den rättfärdighet genom tron, som han hade, medan han ännu var oomskuren. Ty så skulle han bliva en fader för alla oomskurna som tro, och så skulle rättfärdighet tillräknas dem.

¹¹He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

¹²Han skulle ock bliva en fader för omskurna, nämligen för sådana som icke allenast äro omskurna, utan ock vandra i spåren av den tro som vår fader Abraham hade, medan han ännu var oomskuren.

¹²He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

¹³Det var nämligen icke genom lag som Abraham och hans säd undfick det löftet att han skulle få världen till arvedel; det var genom rättfärdighet av tro.

¹³For the promise to Abraham and to his seed that he should be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

¹⁴Ty om de som låta det bero på lag skola få arvedelen, så är tron till intet nyttig, och löftet är gjort om intet.

¹⁴For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.

¹⁵Vad lagen kommer åstad är ju vredesdom; men där ingen lag finnes, där finnes icke heller någon överträdelse.

¹⁵For the law works wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.

¹⁶Därför måste det bero på tro, för att det skulle vara av nåd, så att löftet kunde bliva beståndande för all hans säd, icke blott för dem som hörde till lagens folk, utan ock för dem som allenast hade Abrahams tro. Han är ju allas vår fader,

¹⁶For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

¹⁷enligt detta skriftens ord: »Jag har bestämt dig till att bliva en fader till många folk»; han är detta inför den Gud som han trodde, inför honom som gör de döda levande och kallar på de ting som icke äro till, likasom voro de till.

¹⁷As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” Genesis 17:5 This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

¹⁸Och där ingen förhoppning fanns, där hoppades han ändå och trodde; och han kunde så bliva »en fader till många folk», efter vad som var förutsagt: »Så skall din säd bliva.»

¹⁸Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your seed be.” Genesis 15:5

¹⁹Och han försvagades icke i sin tro, när han betänkte huru hans egen kropp var såsom död -- han var ju omkring hundra år gammal -- och huru jämväl Saras moderliv var såsom dött.

¹⁹Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

²⁰Han tvivlade icke på Guds löfte i otro, utan blev fastmer starkare i sin tro; ty han ärade Gud

²⁰Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,

²¹och var fullt viss om att vad Gud hade lovat, det var han också mäktig att hålla.

²¹and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.

²²Därför räknades det honom ock till rättfärdighet.

²²Therefore it also was “reckoned to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

²³Men att det så tillräknades honom, det är skrivet icke såsom gällde det allenast honom,

²³Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,

²⁴utan det skulle gälla också oss; ty det skall tillräknas jämväl oss, oss som tro på honom som från de döda uppväckte Jesus, vår Herre,

²⁴but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,

²⁵vilken utgavs för våra synders skull och uppväcktes för vår rättfärdiggörelses skull.

²⁵who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
