1ฝ่ายนาหาชคนอัมโมนได้ยกขึ้นไปตั้งค่ายสู้เมืองยาเบชกิเลอาด บรรดาชาวเมืองยาเบชจึงพูดกับนาหาชว่า "ขอทำพันธสัญญากับพวกข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายและข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายจะยอมปรนนิบัติท่าน"
1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”
2แต่นาหาชคนอัมโมนกล่าวแก่เขาทั้งหลายว่า "เราจะกระทำพันธสัญญากับเจ้าทั้งหลายตามเงื่อนไขต่อไปนี้ คือเราจะทะลวงตาขวาของเจ้าเสียทุกคนให้เป็นที่อัปยศแก่คนอิสราเอลทั้งปวง"
2Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Israel.”
3ฝ่ายพวกผู้ใหญ่แห่งเมืองยาเบชกล่าวแก่ท่านว่า "ขอผ่อนผันให้ข้าพเจ้าสักเจ็ดวัน เพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้ส่งผู้สื่อสารไปให้ทั่วขอบเขตอิสราเอล แล้วถ้าไม่มีคนใดช่วยข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายให้พ้นได้ ข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายจะยอมมอบตัวไว้ให้แก่ท่าน"
3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven day, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”
4เมื่อผู้สื่อสารมาถึงกิเบอาห์เมืองของซาอูล เขาทั้งหลายก็รายงานเรื่องราวให้เข้าหูของประชาชน และประชาชนทั้งปวงก็ร้องไห้เสียงดัง
4Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5ดูเถิด ซาอูลต้อนฝูงวัวกลับมาจากทุ่ง และซาอูลถามว่า "ประชาชนเป็นอะไรไปเขาจึงร้องไห้" ดังนั้นเขาจึงเรียนท่านให้ทราบถึงข่าวของพวกยาเบช
5Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
6เมื่อท่านได้ยินถ้อยคำเหล่านี้พระวิญญาณของพระเจ้าก็สถิตกับซาอูล และความโกรธของท่านเกิดขึ้นอย่างรุนแรง
6The Spirit of God came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7ท่านจึงเอาวัวมาคู่หนึ่งฟันออกเป็นท่อนๆ ส่งไปทั่วเขตแดนทั้งสิ้นของอิสราเอลโดยมือของผู้สื่อสาร กล่าวว่า "ผู้หนึ่งผู้ใดที่ไม่ออกมาตามซาอูลและซามูเอล จะกระทำอย่างนี้แก่วัวของเขา" และความเกรงกลัวพระเยโฮวาห์ก็มาเหนือประชาชน เขาทั้งหลายพากันออกมาเป็นใจเดียวกัน
7He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
8เมื่อซาอูลตรวจพลอยู่ที่เบเซก นับคนอิสราเอลได้สามแสนคน และชายคนยูดาห์ได้สามหมื่นคน
8He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9เขาจึงบอกแก่ผู้สื่อสารที่มานั้นว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายจงบอกแก่ชาวยาเบชกิเลอาดว่า `พรุ่งนี้เวลาแดดร้อนท่านทั้งหลายจะได้รับการช่วยให้พ้น'" เมื่อผู้สื่อสารกลับมาบอกพวกยาเบช เขาทั้งหลายก็มีความยินดี
9They said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
10ดังนั้นชาวยาเบชจึงว่า "พรุ่งนี้เราจะมอบตัวของเราไว้ให้แก่ท่าน ท่านจงกระทำแก่เราตามที่ท่านเห็นควรทุกอย่าง"
10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”
11พอวันรุ่งขึ้นซาอูลก็จัดพลออกเป็นสามกองทัพ ยกเข้ามากลางค่ายในยามสาม และฆ่าฟันคนอัมโมนเสียจนเวลาแดดจัด ต่อมา ผู้ที่เหลืออยู่ก็กระจัดกระจายไป รวมกันไม่ได้สักคู่เดียวเลย
11It was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
12แล้วประชาชนจึงเรียนซามูเอลว่า "คนที่พูดว่า `ซาอูลจะปกครองเหนือพวกเราหรือ' นั้น มีใครบ้าง จงนำคนเหล่านั้นออกมา เราจะได้ฆ่าเขาเสีย"
12The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”
13แต่ซาอูลกล่าวว่า "ในวันนี้อย่าให้ผู้ใดถูกประหารชีวิตเลย เพราะว่าวันนี้เป็นวันที่พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงช่วยคนอิสราเอลให้พ้น"
13Saul said, “There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel.”
14แล้วซามูเอลจึงกล่าวแก่ประชาชนว่า "มาเถิด ให้เราพากันไปยังกิลกาล และรื้อฟื้นเรื่องราชอาณาจักรที่นั่นอีก"
14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”
15ประชาชนทั้งปวงจึงขึ้นไปยังกิลกาล และที่นั่นเขาทั้งหลายก็ตั้งซาอูลเป็นกษัตริย์ต่อพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์ที่กิลกาล แล้วที่นั่นเขาทั้งหลายถวายสัตว์เป็นเครื่องสันติบูชาต่อพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์ ซาอูลกับประชาชนอิสราเอลทั้งปวงก็ชื่นชมยินดีอย่างยิ่งที่นั่น
15All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
