¹Saul reigned a year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

²ซาอูลจึงทรงคัดเลือกชายอิสราเอลสามพันคน สองพันคนอยู่กับซาอูลที่มิคมาชและที่แดนเทือกเขาเบธเอล อีกหนึ่งพันคนนั้นอยู่กับโยนาธานที่เมืองกิเบอาห์แห่งคนเบนยามิน ประชาชนนอกนั้นพระองค์ก็ปล่อยให้กลับเต็นท์ของตนทุกคน

²Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

³โยนาธานได้ตีกองทหารรักษาการของคนฟีลิสเตียซึ่งอยู่ที่เกบาพ่ายแพ้ไป คนฟีลิสเตียได้ยินถึงเรื่องนั้น และซาอูลก็เป่าแตรทั่วแผ่นดินนั้นว่า "ขอให้คนฮีบรูทั้งหลายได้ยิน"

³Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”

⁴และคนอิสราเอลทั้งปวงได้ยินเขากล่าวว่า ซาอูลได้รบชนะกองทหารรักษาการของคนฟีลิสเตีย และคนอิสราเอลก็เป็นที่เกลียดชังของคนฟีลิสเตียเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ประชาชนได้ถูกเรียกออกมาให้สมทบกับซาอูลที่กิลกาล

⁴All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

⁵และคนฟีลิสเตียชุมนุมกันเพื่อจะต่อสู้คนอิสราเอล มีรถรบสามหมื่น และพลม้าหกพัน และกองทหารนั้นก็มากมายเหมือนเม็ดทรายที่ฝั่งทะเล เขาก็ยกขึ้นมาตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่มิคมาช ทางตะวันออกของเบธาเวน

⁵The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.

⁶เมื่อคนอิสราเอลเห็นว่าตกอยู่ในที่คับแค้น (เพราะประชาชนถูกบีบคั้นอย่างหนัก) แล้วประชาชนก็ซ่อนตัวอยู่ในถ้ำ และในพุ่มไม้หนาทึบ ในซอกหิน ในอุโมงค์และในบ่อ

⁶When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.

⁷พวกฮีบรูบางคนได้ข้ามแม่น้ำจอร์แดนไปยังดินแดนกาดและกิเลอาด แต่ฝ่ายซาอูลพระองค์ยังประทับอยู่ที่กิลกาล และประชาชนทั้งหมดติดตามพระองค์ไปด้วยตัวสั่น

⁷Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

⁸พระองค์ทรงคอยอยู่เจ็ดวันตามเวลาที่ซามูเอลกำหนดไว้ แต่ซามูเอลมิได้มาที่กิลกาล ประชาชนก็แตกกระจายไปจากพระองค์

⁸He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel: but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

⁹ดังนั้นซาอูลจึงตรัสว่า "จงนำเครื่องเผาบูชามาให้เราที่นี่ และเครื่องสันติบูชาด้วย" และพระองค์ก็ได้ถวายเครื่องเผาบูชา

⁹Saul said, “Bring here the burnt offering to me, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering.

¹⁰ต่อมาพอพระองค์ถวายเครื่องเผาบูชาเสร็จ ดูเถิด ซามูเอลก็มาถึง ซาอูลก็เสด็จออกไปต้อนรับและทรงคำนับท่าน

¹⁰It came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

¹¹ซามูเอลถามว่า "ท่านได้กระทำอะไรไปแล้วนี่" และซาอูลตรัสตอบว่า "เมื่อข้าพเจ้าเห็นประชาชนแตกกระจายไปจากข้าพเจ้า และท่านก็มิได้มาภายในวันที่กำหนดไว้ และคนฟีลิสเตียก็ได้ชุมนุมกันที่มิคมาช

¹¹Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;

¹²ข้าพเจ้าจึงว่า `บัดนี้ คนฟีลิสเตียจะยกมารบกับข้าพเจ้าที่กิลกาล และข้าพเจ้ายังมิได้ทูลขอพระกรุณาแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์' ข้าพเจ้าจึงข่มตัวเอง และได้ถวายเครื่องเผาบูชา"

¹²therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of Yahweh.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.”

¹³และซามูเอลกล่าวแก่ซาอูลว่า "ท่านได้กระทำการที่โง่เขลาเสียแล้ว ท่านมิได้รักษาพระบัญชาแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของท่าน ซึ่งพระองค์ทรงบัญชาท่านไว้ เพราะพระเยโฮวาห์จะได้ทรงสถาปนาราชอาณาจักรของท่านเหนืออิสราเอลเป็นนิตย์แล้ว

¹³Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

¹⁴แต่บัดนี้ราชอาณาจักรของท่านจะไม่ยั่งยืน พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงหาชายอีกคนหนึ่งตามชอบพระทัยพระองค์แล้ว และพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงบัญชาชายผู้นั้นให้เป็นเจ้านายเหนือชนชาติของพระองค์ เพราะท่านมิได้รักษาสิ่งซึ่งพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงบัญชาท่านไว้"

¹⁴But now your kingdom shall not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”

¹⁵และซามูเอลก็ลุกขึ้นไปจากกิลกาลถึงกิเบอาห์แห่งคนเบนยามิน และซาอูลทรงนับพลซึ่งอยู่กับพระองค์ได้ประมาณหกร้อยคน

¹⁵Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

¹⁶ซาอูลกับโยนาธานราชโอรสของพระองค์ และพลที่อยู่กับพระองค์ก็อยู่ในกิเบอาห์แห่งคนเบนยามิน แต่คนฟีลิสเตียตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่มิคมาช

¹⁶Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

¹⁷มีกองปล้นออกมาจากค่ายคนฟีลิสเตียสามกอง กองหนึ่งหันตรงไปยังโอฟราห์ยังแผ่นดินชูอัล

¹⁷The spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;

¹⁸อีกกองหนึ่งหันตรงไปยังเบธโฮโรน และอีกกองหนึ่งหันตรงไปยังพรมแดนซึ่งอยู่เหนือหุบเขาเศโบอิมตรงถิ่นทุรกันดาร

¹⁸and another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

¹⁹คราวนั้นจะหาช่างเหล็กทั่วแผ่นดินอิสราเอลก็ไม่มี เพราะคนฟีลิสเตียกล่าวว่า "เกรงว่าพวกฮีบรูจะทำดาบหรือหอกใช้เอง"

¹⁹Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears”;

²⁰แต่คนอิสราเอลทุกคนลงไปยังฟีลิสเตียเพื่อลับเหล็กไถ ผาล ขวานและจอบของเขา

²⁰but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, mattock, axe, and sickle;

²¹แต่พวกเขาคิดค่าลับสำหรับลับจอบ ผาล สามง่าม ขวาน และติดประตัก

²¹yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the plowshares, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.

²²เพราะฉะนั้นเมื่อถึงวันทำศึกจะหาดาบหรือหอกในมือของพลที่อยู่กับซาอูลและโยนาธานก็ไม่ได้ แต่ซาอูลกับโยนาธานราชโอรสของพระองค์มี

²²So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

²³และกองทหารรักษาการของคนฟีลิสเตียยกไปถึงทางที่ข้ามไปเมืองมิคมาช

²³The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
