1พระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสกับซามูเอลว่า "เจ้าจะเป็นทุกข์เรื่องซาอูลนานเท่าใดเล่า เมื่อเราถอดเขาจากเป็นกษัตริย์เหนืออิสราเอลแล้ว จงเติมน้ำมันให้เต็มเขาสัตว์ของเจ้า แล้วก็ไปเถอะ เราจะใช้เจ้าไปหาเจสซีชาวเบธเลเฮม เพราะว่าในหมู่พวกบุตรชายของเขาเราจัดเตรียมกษัตริย์องค์หนึ่งไว้แล้วสำหรับเรา"
1Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”
2ซามูเอลก็กราบทูลว่า "ข้าพระองค์จะไปอย่างไรได้ ถ้าซาอูลได้ยินเขาคงฆ่าข้าพระองค์เสีย" และพระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสว่า "จงนำวัวตัวเมียไปกับเจ้าตัวหนึ่ง และกล่าวว่า `ข้าพเจ้ามาถวายสัตวบูชาแด่พระเยโฮวาห์'
2Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.
3จงเชิญเจสซีมาที่การถวายสัตวบูชานั้น แล้วเราจะสำแดงให้เจ้ารู้ว่าเจ้าควรจะกระทำประการใด เจ้าจงเจิมให้เราผู้ซึ่งเราจะบอกชื่อแก่เจ้า"
3Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”
4ซามูเอลก็กระทำตามที่พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงบัญชา และมาที่เบธเลเฮม พวกผู้ใหญ่ของเมืองนั้นก็ตัวสั่นออกมาหาท่านกล่าวว่า "ท่านมาอย่างสันติหรือ"
4Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
5และซามูเอลตอบว่า "มาอย่างสันติ เรามาถวายสัตวบูชาแด่พระเยโฮวาห์ จงชำระตัวของท่านให้บริสุทธิ์ และขอเชิญมาที่การถวายสัตวบูชากับเรา" และซามูเอลก็ชำระตัวเจสซีและบุตรชายทั้งหลายของท่านให้บริสุทธิ์ และเชิญเขาเหล่านั้นให้ไปยังการถวายสัตวบูชา
5He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6อยู่มาเมื่อเขาทั้งหลายมาแล้วท่านก็มองเห็นเอลีอับจึงคิดว่า "ผู้ที่พระองค์ทรงให้เจิมไว้ก็อยู่ต่อพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์แน่แล้ว"
6It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, “Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.”
7แต่พระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสกับซามูเอลว่า "อย่ามองดูที่รูปร่างหน้าตาหรือที่ความสูงแห่งร่างกายของเขา ด้วยเราไม่ยอมรับเขา เพราะพระเยโฮวาห์ทอดพระเนตรไม่เหมือนกับที่มนุษย์ดู ด้วยว่ามนุษย์ดูที่รูปร่างภายนอก แต่พระเยโฮวาห์ทอดพระเนตรจิตใจ"
7But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for I see not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”
8แล้วเจสซีก็เรียกอาบีนาดับให้เดินผ่านหน้าซามูเอล ท่านกล่าวว่า "พระเยโฮวาห์มิได้ทรงเลือกผู้นี้"
8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
9แล้วเจสซีให้ชัมมาห์เดินผ่านไป และท่านก็กล่าวว่า "พระเยโฮวาห์มิได้ทรงเลือกผู้นี้"
9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
10แล้วเจสซีให้บุตรชายทั้งเจ็ดคนเดินผ่านหน้าซามูเอล และซามูเอลบอกกับเจสซีว่า "พระเยโฮวาห์มิได้ทรงเลือกคนเหล่านี้"
10Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen these.”
11แล้วซามูเอลกล่าวแก่เจสซีว่า "บุตรชายของท่านอยู่ที่นี่หมดแล้วหรือ" เจสซีตอบว่า "ยังมีคนสุดท้องอีกคนหนึ่ง ดูเถิด เขากำลังเลี้ยงแกะอยู่" และซามูเอลกล่าวแก่เจสซีว่า "จงใช้คนไปตามเขามา เพราะเราจะไม่ยอมนั่งจนกว่าเขาจะมาที่นี่"
11Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
12เจสซีก็ใช้คนไปนำเขามา ฝ่ายเขาเป็นคนผิวแดงๆ มีใบหน้าสวยและรูปร่างงามน่าดู และพระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสว่า "จงลุกขึ้นเจิมตั้งเขาไว้ เพราะเป็นคนนี้แหละ"
12He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. Yahweh said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”
13ซามูเอลจึงนำขวดเขาน้ำมันและเจิมตั้งเขาไว้ท่ามกลางพี่ชายของเขา และพระวิญญาณของพระเยโฮวาห์ก็สวมทับดาวิดตั้งแต่วันนั้นเป็นต้นไป และซามูเอลก็ลุกขึ้นกลับไปยังรามาห์
13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14ฝ่ายพระวิญญาณของพระเยโฮวาห์ก็พรากจากซาอูล และวิญญาณชั่วจากพระเยโฮวาห์ก็ทรมานซาอูล
14Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.
15และพวกมหาดเล็กของซาอูลก็กราบทูลว่า "ดูเถิด บัดนี้วิญญาณชั่วจากพระเจ้ากำลังทรมานพระองค์อยู่
15Saul’s servants said to him, “See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.
16ขอเจ้านายของข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลาย จงบัญชาผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ผู้ที่อยู่ต่อพระพักตร์พระองค์ให้หาคนที่มีฝีมือในการดีดพิณเขาคู่ และต่อมาเมื่อวิญญาณชั่วจากพระเจ้าสิงพระองค์ ก็ให้เขาดีดพิณเขาคู่แล้วพระองค์จะหายดี"
16Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. It shall happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.”
17ซาอูลก็รับสั่งผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ว่า "จงไปหาชายคนหนึ่งที่ดีดพิณได้ดีมาให้เรา นำเขามาหาเรา"
17Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
18คนหนึ่งในพวกผู้รับใช้ทูลว่า "ดูเถิด ข้าพระองค์เห็นบุตรชายคนหนึ่งของเจสซีชาวเบธเลเฮม เป็นผู้มีฝีมือในการดีดพิณ เป็นคนกล้าหาญ เป็นนักรบ เฉลียวฉลาดในกิจการงาน และเป็นคนมีหน้าตาดีและพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงสถิตกับเขา"
18Then one of the young men answered, and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Yahweh is with him.”
19เพราะฉะนั้นซาอูลจึงส่งผู้สื่อสารไปยังเจสซีกล่าวว่า "จงให้ดาวิดบุตรชายของท่านผู้อยู่กับแกะนั้นมาหาเรา"
19Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.”
20และเจสซีก็จัดลาตัวหนึ่งบรรทุกขนมปัง และถุงหนังใส่น้ำองุ่นถุงหนึ่ง กับลูกแพะตัวหนึ่ง ฝากไปกับดาวิดบุตรชายของท่านให้ถวายซาอูล
20Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul.
21ดาวิดก็มาเฝ้าซาอูลและเข้ารับราชการ ซาอูลก็ทรงรักดาวิดมาก ดาวิดก็ได้เป็นคนถือเครื่องอาวุธของซาอูล
21David came to Saul, and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.
22และซาอูลทรงส่งข่าวไปยังเจสซีว่า "เราขอร้องให้ท่าน โปรดอนุญาตให้ดาวิดมายืนอยู่เบื้องหน้าเราเถิด เพราะเขาเป็นที่โปรดปรานในสายตาของเรา"
22Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight.”
23อยู่มาเมื่อวิญญาณชั่วจากพระเจ้ามาสิงซาอูลเมื่อไร ดาวิดก็หยิบพิณเขาคู่ใช้มือดีดถวาย ซาอูลก็ทรงชุ่มชื่นขึ้นและหายดี และวิญญาณชั่วก็พรากจากพระองค์ไป
23It happened, when the spirit from God was on Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
