¹และถ้อยคำของซามูเอลมาถึงคนอิสราเอลทั้งปวง ฝ่ายคนอิสราเอลได้ยกกองทัพออกไปสู้รบกับคนฟีลิสเตีย ได้ตั้งค่ายอยู่ข้างเอเบนเอเซอร์ และคนฟีลิสเตียตั้งค่ายอยู่ในเอเฟก

¹The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

²คนฟีลิสเตียได้จัดพลเป็นแนวเข้าต่อสู้กับอิสราเอล และเมื่อสงครามได้ขยายวงออกไป อิสราเอลก็พ่ายแพ้ต่อหน้าคนฟีลิสเตีย ผู้ได้ฆ่าคนเสียประมาณสี่พันคนในสนามรบ

²The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was struck before the Philistines; and they killed of the army in the field about four thousand men.

³และเมื่อกองทัพกลับมาสู่ค่าย พวกผู้ใหญ่ของอิสราเอลก็กล่าวว่า "ทำไมพระเยโฮวาห์จึงทรงให้เราพ่ายแพ้ต่อหน้าคนฟีลิสเตียในวันนี้ ขอเราไปนำหีบพันธสัญญาแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์มาให้เราจากเมืองชีโลห์เถิด เพื่อว่าหีบนั้นจะมาท่ามกลางเราและจะช่วยเราให้พ้นจากมือศัตรูของเรา"

³When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh struck us today before the Philistines? Let us get the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of Shiloh to us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

⁴เขาจึงใช้คนไปที่เมืองชีโลห์ เพื่อนำหีบพันธสัญญาแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธา ผู้ประทับระหว่างพวกเครูบ มาจากชีโลห์ บุตรชายทั้งสองของเอลี คือโฮฟนีและฟีเนหัส ก็อยู่กับหีบพันธสัญญาแห่งพระเจ้าที่นั่น

⁴So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁵เมื่อหีบพันธสัญญาแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์เข้ามาในค่ายแล้ว คนอิสราเอลทั้งสิ้นก็โห่ร้องเสียงดังจนแผ่นดินก้องไปด้วยเสียงนั้น

⁵When the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

⁶และเมื่อคนฟีลิสเตียได้ยินเสียงโห่ร้องดังเช่นนั้น เขาก็กล่าวว่า "เสียงโห่ร้องอึกทึกครึกโครมในค่ายของคนฮีบรูนั้นหมายความว่าอะไรกัน" และเขาทราบว่าหีบแห่งพระเยโฮวาห์เข้ามาในค่ายแล้ว

⁶When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.

⁷คนฟีลิสเตียก็กลัวเพราะเขากล่าวว่า "พระเจ้าได้เสด็จมาในค่ายแล้ว" และเขากล่าวว่า "วิบัติแก่เราทั้งหลาย เพราะแต่ก่อนไม่เคยเกิดเรื่องอย่างนี้เลย

⁷The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

⁸วิบัติแก่เราทั้งหลาย ใครจะช่วยเราให้พ้นจากพระหัตถ์ของบรรดาพระอันทรงฤทธานุภาพนี้ได้ พระเหล่านี้เป็นผู้ที่ฆ่าฟันชาวอียิปต์ด้วยภัยพิบัตินานาชนิดในถิ่นทุรกันดาร

⁸Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

⁹โอ คนฟีลิสเตียเอ๋ย จงกล้าหาญเถิด จงกระทำตัวเป็นลูกผู้ชาย เพื่อว่าเจ้าจะไม่เป็นทาสของคนฮีบรู ดังที่เขาเคยเป็นทาสเจ้า จงกระทำตัวให้เป็นลูกผู้ชายและเข้ารบ"

⁹Be strong, and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

¹⁰เพราะฉะนั้นคนฟีลิสเตียจึงสู้รบและอิสราเอลก็พ่ายแพ้ ต่างก็หนีไปยังเต็นท์ของตน ครั้งนั้นมีการฆ่าฟันกันมาก เพราะทหารราบของอิสราเอลตายเสียสามหมื่นคน

¹⁰The Philistines fought, and Israel was struck, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

¹¹และหีบแห่งพระเจ้าก็ถูกยึดไป และบุตรชายทั้งสองของเอลี คือโฮฟนีและฟีเนหัสก็ถูกฆ่าตาย

¹¹The ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹²ผู้ชายคนเบนยามินคนหนึ่งวิ่งไปจากแนวรบมาถึงชีโลห์ในวันเดียวกัน เสื้อผ้าขาดและดินก็อยู่บนศีรษะของเขา

¹²There ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn, and with earth on his head.

¹³เมื่อเขามาถึงนั้น ดูเถิด เอลีอยู่บนที่นั่งข้างถนนคอยเฝ้าอยู่ เพราะจิตใจของท่านหวั่นด้วยเรื่องหีบแห่งพระเจ้า และเมื่อชายคนนั้นเข้ามาในเมืองและบอกข่าว ชาวเมืองทั้งสิ้นก็ร้องขึ้น

¹³When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

¹⁴เมื่อเอลีได้ยินเสียงร้องเช่นนั้นก็ถามว่า "นั่นเสียงอะไรกันโกลาหล" แล้วชายคนนั้นก็รีบเข้ามาบอกเอลี

¹⁴When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

¹⁵ฝ่ายเอลีมีอายุเก้าสิบแปดปี ตาของท่านมืดมัว มองอะไรไม่เห็น

¹⁵Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.

¹⁶ชายคนนั้นบอกเอลีว่า "ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนที่มาจากแนวรบ ข้าพเจ้าหนีมาจากแนวรบวันนี้" เอลีก็ถามว่า "ลูกเอ๋ย เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง"

¹⁶The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

¹⁷ผู้ที่ส่งข่าวนั้นก็ตอบว่า "อิสราเอลได้หนีไปต่อหน้าต่อตาคนฟีลิสเตียไปแล้ว มีการฆ่าฟันกันมากท่ามกลางประชาชน บุตรชายทั้งสองของท่าน คือโฮฟนีและฟีเนหัสก็ตาย และหีบแห่งพระเจ้าถูกยึดไปเสีย"

¹⁷He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

¹⁸ต่อมาเมื่อเขากล่าวถึงหีบแห่งพระเจ้า เอลีก็หงายหลังจากที่นั่งที่อยู่ข้างประตู คอของท่านก็หัก และท่านสิ้นชีวิตแล้ว เพราะท่านชรามากและตัวก็หนัก ท่านได้วินิจฉัยคนอิสราเอลอยู่สี่สิบปี

¹⁸It happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

¹⁹ฝ่ายบุตรสะใภ้ของท่าน คือภรรยาของฟีเนหัสมีครรภ์กำลังจะคลอดบุตร และเมื่อนางได้ยินข่าวว่า เขายึดหีบแห่งพระเจ้าไป และพ่อผัวและสามีของนางก็สิ้นชีวิต นางก็โน้มตัวลงและคลอดบุตร เพราะความเจ็บปวดบังเกิดขึ้นแก่นาง

¹⁹His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered. When she heard the news that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

²⁰เมื่อนางกำลังจะตายนั้น พวกผู้หญิงที่เฝ้านางอยู่ได้บอกนางว่า "อย่ากลัวเลย เพราะเจ้าคลอดลูกผู้ชายคนหนึ่ง" แต่นางไม่ตอบไม่ฟัง

²⁰About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid; for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

²¹นางให้ชื่อเด็กนั้นว่า อีคาโบด กล่าวว่า "สง่าราศีพรากไปจากอิสราเอลแล้ว" เพราะเขายึดหีบแห่งพระเจ้าไป และเพราะเรื่องพ่อผัวและสามีของนาง

²¹She named the child Ichabod, “Ichabod” means “no glory.” saying, “The glory has departed from Israel”; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

²²และนางกล่าวว่า "สง่าราศีได้พรากจากอิสราเอลแล้ว เพราะเขายึดหีบแห่งพระเจ้าไป"

²²She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.”
