¹ถ้อยคำของปัญญาจารย์ ผู้เป็นบุตรชายของดาวิด กษัตริย์ในเยรูซาเล็ม

¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

²ปัญญาจารย์กล่าวว่า อนิจจัง อนิจจัง อนิจจัง อนิจจัง สารพัดอนิจจัง

²“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

³ที่มนุษย์ทำงานตรากตรำภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ เขาได้ประโยชน์อะไรจากงานทั้งสิ้นที่เขาทำนั้น

³What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

⁴ชั่วอายุหนึ่งล่วงไป และอีกชั่วอายุหนึ่งก็มา แต่แผ่นดินโลกคงเดิมอยู่เป็นนิตย์

⁴One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

⁵ดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้น และดวงอาทิตย์ตก แล้วรีบไปถึงที่ซึ่งขึ้นมานั้น

⁵The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

⁶ลมพัดไปทางใต้ แล้วเวียนกลับไปทางเหนือ ลมพัดเวียนไปเวียนมา แล้วลมพัดกลับตามทางเวียนของมัน

⁶The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

⁷แม่น้ำทั้งหลายไหลไปสู่ทะเล แต่ทะเลก็ไม่เต็ม แม่น้ำไหลไปสู่ที่ใดก็ไหลไปสู่ที่นั่นอีก

⁷All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

⁸สารพัดเหนื่อยกันหมด คนใดๆก็พูดไม่ออก นัยน์ตาก็ดูไม่อิ่มหรือหูก็ฟังไม่เต็ม

⁸All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁹สิ่งที่เป็นขึ้นแล้วคือสิ่งที่จะเป็นขึ้นอีก สิ่งที่ทำกันแล้วคือสิ่งที่จะต้องทำกันอีก และไม่มีสิ่งใดใหม่ภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์

⁹That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

¹⁰มีสักสิ่งหนึ่งหรือที่เขาจะพูดได้ว่า "ดูซี สิ่งนี้ใหม่" สิ่งนั้นมีอยู่แล้วในสมัยก่อนเราทั้งหลาย

¹⁰Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new?” It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

¹¹ไม่มีการจดจำถึงสมัยก่อนและจะไม่มีการจดจำสิ่งหลังๆที่จะเกิดมาในท่ามกลางบรรดาผู้ที่มาภายหลัง

¹¹There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

¹²ข้าพเจ้า ปัญญาจารย์ เคยเป็นกษัตริย์เหนืออิสราเอลในกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม

¹²I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹³และข้าพเจ้าตั้งใจเสาะและแสวงหาโดยสติปัญญาถึงสิ่งสารพัดที่กระทำกันภายใต้ฟ้าสวรรค์ เป็นเรื่องยากลำบากซึ่งพระเจ้าประทานให้บุตรของมนุษย์ทำกันอยู่นั้น

¹³I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

¹⁴ข้าพเจ้าเคยเห็นการทั้งปวงซึ่งเขากระทำกันภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ และดูเถิด สารพัดก็เป็นความว่างเปล่าและความวุ่นวายใจ

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹⁵อะไรที่คดจะทำให้ตรงไม่ได้ และอะไรที่ขาดอยู่จะนับให้ครบไม่ได้

¹⁵That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

¹⁶ข้าพเจ้ารำพึงในใจของข้าพเจ้าว่า "ดูเถิด ข้าพเจ้าได้มาถึงฐานะที่สูงส่ง และได้มีสติปัญญามากกว่าใครๆที่เคยอยู่ในกรุงเยรูซาเล็มก่อนข้าพเจ้า เออ ใจข้าพเจ้าก็เจนจัดในสติปัญญาและความรู้อย่างยิ่ง"

¹⁶I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

¹⁷ข้าพเจ้าก็ตั้งใจรู้สติปัญญา รู้ความบ้าบอ และความเขลา ข้าพเจ้าสังเกตเห็นว่าเรื่องนี้ก็เป็นแต่กินลมกินแล้งด้วย

¹⁷I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

¹⁸เพราะในสติปัญญามากๆก็มีความทุกข์ระทมมาก และบุคคลที่เพิ่มความรู้ก็เพิ่มความเศร้าโศก

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
