¹ยาโคบก็เดินทางไปแล้วเหล่าทูตสวรรค์ของพระเจ้าพบเขา

¹Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

²เมื่อยาโคบเห็นทูตสวรรค์เหล่านั้นเขาจึงว่า "นี่เป็นกองทัพของพระเจ้า" เขาจึงเรียกสถานที่นั้นว่า มาหะนาอิม

²When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.

³ยาโคบส่งผู้สื่อสารหลายคนล่วงหน้าไปหาเอซาวพี่ชายของตนที่แผ่นดินเสอีร์ที่เมืองเอโดมตั้งอยู่

³Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

⁴และสั่งเขาว่า "จงไปบอกเอซาวนายของเราว่า ยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่านกล่าวดังนี้ `ข้าพเจ้าไปอาศัยอยู่กับลาบันจนบัดนี้

⁴He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.

⁵ข้าพเจ้ามีฝูงวัว ฝูงลา ฝูงแพะแกะ มีคนใช้ชายหญิง ข้าพเจ้าใช้คนมาเรียนนายของข้าพเจ้าเพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้รับความกรุณาในสายตาของท่าน'"

⁵I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”

⁶ผู้สื่อสารนั้นกลับมาบอกยาโคบว่า "ข้าพเจ้าไปพบเอซาวพี่ชายของท่านแล้ว เขากำลังจะมาพบท่านด้วย มีพวกผู้ชายมากับเขาสี่ร้อยคน"

⁶The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. Not only that, but he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.”

⁷ยาโคบมีความกลัวและเป็นทุกข์ยิ่งนัก เขาจึงแบ่งคนทั้งหลายที่มาด้วยเขา และฝูงแพะแกะ ฝูงวัว ฝูงอูฐ ออกเป็นสองพวก

⁷Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies;

⁸คิดว่า "ถ้าเอซาวมาตีพวกหนึ่ง อีกพวกหนึ่งที่เหลือจะหนีไปได้"

⁸and he said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”

⁹ยาโคบอธิษฐานว่า "โอพระเจ้าของอับราฮัมปู่ของข้าพระองค์ และพระเจ้าของอิสอัคบิดาของข้าพระองค์ ข้าแต่พระเยโฮวาห์ผู้ตรัสสั่งข้าพระองค์ไว้ว่า `กลับไปยังแผ่นดินและยังญาติพี่น้องของเจ้า และเราจะกระทำการดีแก่เจ้านั้น'

⁹Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’

¹⁰ข้าพระองค์ไม่สมควรจะรับบรรดาพระกรุณาและความจริงแม้เล็กน้อยที่สุด ที่พระองค์ได้ทรงโปรดสำแดงแก่ผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ ด้วยว่าข้าพระองค์ข้ามแม่น้ำจอร์แดนนี้เมื่อมีแต่ไม้เท้า และบัดนี้ข้าพระองค์มีผู้คนเป็นสองพวก

¹⁰I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

¹¹ขอพระองค์ทรงโปรดช่วยข้าพระองค์ให้พ้นจากเงื้อมมือพี่ชายข้าพระองค์ คือจากเงื้อมมือของเอซาว เพราะข้าพระองค์กลัวเขา เกรงว่าเขาจะมาตีข้าพระองค์ ทั้งมารดากับลูกด้วย

¹¹Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, and the mothers with the children.

¹²แต่พระองค์ตรัสไว้แล้วว่า `เราจะกระทำการดีแก่เจ้าและทำให้เชื้อสายของเจ้าดุจเม็ดทรายที่ทะเล ซึ่งจะมากมายจนนับไม่ถ้วน'"

¹²You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which can’t be numbered because there are so many.’”

¹³คืนวันนั้นยาโคบพักอยู่ที่นั่นและคัดเอาของที่มีอยู่นั้นให้เป็นของกำนัลแก่เอซาวพี่ชายของตน

¹³He lodged there that night, and took from that which he had with him, a present for Esau, his brother:

¹⁴คือแพะตัวเมียสองร้อย แพะตัวผู้ยี่สิบ แกะตัวเมียสองร้อย และแกะตัวผู้ยี่สิบ

¹⁴two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

¹⁵อูฐแม่ลูกอ่อนสามสิบกับลูกวัวตัวเมียสี่สิบ วัวตัวผู้สิบ ลาตัวเมียยี่สิบ และลูกลาสิบ

¹⁵thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.

¹⁶ยาโคบมอบสิ่งเหล่านี้ไว้ในความดูแลของคนใช้ แต่ละฝูงอยู่ต่างหาก และสั่งพวกคนใช้ว่า "ล่วงหน้าไปก่อนเรา และให้หมู่สัตว์นี้เว้นระยะห่างกันหน่อย"

¹⁶He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”

¹⁷ยาโคบสั่งหมู่ที่ขึ้นหน้าว่า "เมื่อเอซาวพี่ชายของเรามาพบเจ้าและถามเจ้าว่า `เจ้าเป็นคนของใคร เจ้าไปไหน และของที่อยู่ข้างหน้าเจ้านี้เป็นของใคร'

¹⁷He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’

¹⁸เจ้าจงตอบว่า `ของเหล่านี้เป็นของยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่าน เป็นของกำนัลส่งมาให้เอซาวนายของข้าพเจ้า และดูเถิด ยาโคบตามมาข้างหลัง'"

¹⁸Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”

¹⁹ยาโคบสั่งหมู่ที่สองและหมู่ที่สาม และบรรดาผู้ที่ติดตามหมู่เหล่านั้นทำนองเดียวกันว่า "เมื่อเจ้าพบเอซาว จงกล่าวแก่เขาเช่นเดียวกัน

¹⁹He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

²⁰และเสริมว่า `ดูเถิด ยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่านกำลังตามมาข้างหลังพวกเรา'" เพราะยาโคบคิดว่า "ข้าจะระงับความโกรธของเอซาวได้ด้วยของกำนัลที่ส่งล่วงหน้าไป และภายหลังข้าจะเห็นหน้าเขา บางทีเขาจะยอมรับข้า"

²⁰You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”

²¹ดังนั้น ของกำนัลต่างๆจึงล่วงหน้าไปก่อนเขา ส่วนตัวเขาคืนนั้นยังค้างอยู่ในค่าย

²¹So the present passed over before him, and he himself lodged that night in the camp.

²²กลางคืนนั้นเอง ยาโคบก็ลุกขึ้น พาภรรยาทั้งสอง สาวใช้ทั้งสองและบุตรชายสิบเอ็ดคนข้ามลำธารชื่อยับบอกไป

²²He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.

²³ยาโคบส่งครอบครัวข้ามลำธารไป และส่งของทั้งหมดของตนข้ามไปด้วย

²³He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.

²⁴ยาโคบอยู่ที่นั่นแต่ผู้เดียว มีบุรุษผู้หนึ่งมาปล้ำกับเขาจนเวลารุ่งสาง

²⁴Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.

²⁵เมื่อบุรุษผู้นั้นเห็นว่าจะเอาชนะยาโคบไม่ได้ ก็ถูกต้องที่ข้อต่อตะโพกของยาโคบ ข้อต่อตะโพกของยาโคบก็เคล็ด เมื่อปล้ำสู้กันอยู่นั้น

²⁵When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained, as he wrestled.

²⁶บุรุษนั้นจึงว่า "ปล่อยให้เราไปเถิดเพราะใกล้สว่างแล้ว" แต่ยาโคบตอบว่า "ข้าพเจ้าไม่ยอมให้ท่านไป นอกจากท่านจะอวยพรแก่ข้าพเจ้า"

²⁶The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go, unless you bless me.”

²⁷บุรุษผู้นั้นจึงถามยาโคบว่า "เจ้าชื่ออะไร" ยาโคบตอบว่า "ข้าพเจ้าชื่อยาโคบ"

²⁷He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.”

²⁸บุรุษนั้นจึงว่า "เขาจะไม่เรียกเจ้าว่ายาโคบต่อไป แต่จะเรียกว่า อิสราเอล เพราะเจ้าเหมือนเจ้าชายได้สู้กับพระเจ้าและมนุษย์ และได้ชัยชนะ"

²⁸He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

²⁹ยาโคบจึงถามบุรุษผู้นั้นว่า "ขอท่านบอกข้าพเจ้าว่าท่านชื่ออะไร" แต่บุรุษนั้นกล่าวว่า "เหตุไฉนเจ้าจึงถามชื่อเรา" แล้วก็อวยพรยาโคบที่นั่น

²⁹Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” He blessed him there.

³⁰ยาโคบจึงเรียกสถานที่นั้นว่า เปนีเอล กล่าวว่า "เพราะข้าพเจ้าได้เห็นพระพักตร์พระเจ้า แล้วยังมีชีวิตอยู่"

³⁰Jacob called the name of the place Peniel Peniel means “face of God.” : for, he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

³¹เมื่อยาโคบผ่านเปนูเอล ดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นแล้วเขาเดินโขยกเขยกไป

³¹The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.

³²เหตุฉะนี้ คนอิสราเอลจึงไม่กินเส้นเอ็นที่ตะโพก ซึ่งอยู่ที่ข้อต่อตะโพกนั้นจนทุกวันนี้ เพราะพระองค์ทรงถูกต้องข้อต่อตะโพกของยาโคบตรงเส้นเอ็นที่ตะโพก

³²Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
