¹ต่อมา ครั้งนั้นยูดาห์ลงไปจากพวกพี่น้อง ไปอาศัยอยู่กับคนอดุลลามคนหนึ่งชื่อฮีราห์

¹It happened at that time, that Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

²ยูดาห์เห็นบุตรสาวของคนคานาอันคนหนึ่งที่นั่น บิดาหญิงนั้นชื่อชูวา จึงแต่งงานกับหญิงนั้นและเข้าไปหานาง

²Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her, and went in to her.

³หญิงนั้นก็ตั้งครรภ์คลอดบุตรชาย บิดาจึงตั้งชื่อว่า เอร์

³She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.

⁴หญิงนั้นก็ตั้งครรภ์อีกคลอดบุตรชาย ตั้งชื่อว่า โอนัน

⁴She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.

⁵นางตั้งครรภ์อีกคลอดบุตรชาย ตั้งชื่อว่า เช-ลาห์ นางอยู่ที่เคซิบเมื่อนางให้กำเนิดเขา

⁵She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

⁶ยูดาห์ก็ได้หาหญิงคนหนึ่งชื่อทามาร์ให้เป็นภรรยาเอร์บุตรหัวปีของตน

⁶Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

⁷เอร์บุตรหัวปีของยูดาห์เป็นคนชั่วในสายพระเนตรของพระเยโฮวาห์ พระเยโฮวาห์จึงทรงประหารเขาเสีย

⁷Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh. Yahweh killed him.

⁸ยูดาห์จึงบอกโอนันว่า "เข้าไปหาภรรยาพี่ชายของเจ้าเถิด และแต่งงานกับนาง เพื่อจะได้สืบเชื้อสายพี่ชายไว้"

⁸Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up seed to your brother.”

⁹โอนันรู้ว่าเชื้อสายจะไม่ได้นับเป็นของตน ต่อมา เมื่อเขาเข้าไปหาภรรยาของพี่ชาย จึงทำให้น้ำกามตกดินเสียด้วยเกรงว่าจะสืบเชื้อสายให้แก่พี่ชาย

⁹Onan knew that the seed wouldn’t be his; and it happened, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.

¹⁰สิ่งที่โอนันกระทำนั้นไม่เป็นที่พอพระทัยพระเยโฮวาห์ พระองค์จึงทรงประหารชีวิตเขาเสีย

¹⁰The thing which he did was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he killed him also.

¹¹ยูดาห์จึงบอกทามาร์บุตรสะใภ้ว่า "กลับไปเป็นหญิงม่ายที่บ้านบิดาจนกว่าเช-ลาห์บุตรชายของเราจะโต" ยูดาห์กลัวว่าเขาจะตายเสียเหมือนพี่ชาย นางทามาร์จึงไปอาศัยอยู่ในบ้านบิดา

¹¹Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up”; for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

¹²อยู่มาภรรยาของยูดาห์ ผู้เป็นบุตรสาวชูวาก็ตาย เมื่อยูดาห์ค่อยบรรเทาความโศก จึงขึ้นไปหาคนตัดขนแกะของตนที่บ้านทิมนาท กับเพื่อนชื่อฮีราห์ เป็นคนอดุลลาม

¹²After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.

¹³มีคนมาบอกนางทามาร์ว่า "ดูเถิด พ่อผัวของเจ้าไปบ้านทิมนาทจะตัดขนแกะ"

¹³It was told Tamar, saying, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

¹⁴นางจึงผลัดเสื้อสำหรับหญิงม่ายออกเสีย เอาผ้าคลุมหน้าห่มตัวไว้ไปนั่งอยู่ที่สถานที่กลางแจ้ง ริมทางที่จะไปบ้านทิมนาท ด้วยนางเห็นว่าเช-ลาห์โตขึ้นแล้ว แต่นางยังมิได้เป็นภรรยาของเขา

¹⁴She took off of her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

¹⁵เมื่อยูดาห์เห็นนางก็คิดว่าเป็นหญิงโสเภณี เพราะนางได้เอาผ้าคลุมหน้าไว้

¹⁵When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

¹⁶ยูดาห์จึงได้เข้าไปพูดกับหญิงริมทางนั้นว่า "มาเถิด ให้เราเข้านอนด้วย" (เพราะไม่ทราบว่านางเป็นสะใภ้ของตน) นางจึงว่า "ท่านจะให้อะไรสำหรับการที่เข้าหาข้าพเจ้า"

¹⁶He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

¹⁷ยูดาห์ตอบว่า "เราจะส่งลูกแพะจากฝูงมาให้เจ้าตัวหนึ่ง" นางก็ถามว่า "ท่านจะให้ของมัดจำไว้ก่อนจนกว่าจะส่งลูกแพะนั้นมาได้ไหม"

¹⁷He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”

¹⁸ยูดาห์ถามว่า "เจ้าจะเอาอะไรเป็นของมัดจำ" นางจึงตอบว่า "จะขอแหวนตรากับเชือก ทั้งไม้พลองที่มือท่านด้วย" ยูดาห์ก็ให้ และเข้าไปหานาง นางก็ตั้งครรภ์กับเขา

¹⁸He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

¹⁹นางจึงลุกขึ้นไปเสียและเอาผ้าคลุมหน้านั้นออก นุ่งห่มเสื้อผ้าสำหรับหญิงม่ายอีก

¹⁹She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

²⁰ฝ่ายยูดาห์ฝากลูกแพะมากับเพื่อนคนอดุลลามให้ไถ่ของมัดจำจากมือหญิงนั้น แต่เขาหานางไม่พบ

²⁰Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.

²¹เขาจึงถามคนที่อยู่ตำบลนั้นว่า "หญิงโสเภณีอยู่ที่สถานที่กลางแจ้งริมทางนี้ไปไหน" เขาตอบว่า "หญิงโสเภณีที่นี่ไม่มี"

²¹Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

²²เพื่อนก็กลับไปบอกยูดาห์ว่า "ข้าพเจ้าหาไม่พบ ทั้งชาวตำบลนั้นก็ว่า `หญิงโสเภณีที่นี่ไม่มี'"

²²He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

²³ยูดาห์จึงว่า "ให้หญิงนั้นเก็บของนั้นไว้เถิด มิฉะนั้นเราจะละอายใจ ดูเถิด เราฝากลูกแพะตัวนี้ไปให้ แต่ท่านก็หาหญิงนั้นไม่พบ"

²³Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

²⁴อยู่มาอีกประมาณสามเดือน มีคนมาบอกยูดาห์ว่า "ทามาร์บุตรสะใภ้ของท่านเป็นหญิงแพศยา ยิ่งกว่านั้นอีก ดูเถิด นางมีครรภ์เพราะการแพศยาแล้ว" ยูดาห์จึงสั่งว่า "พานางออกมานี่จับคลอกไฟเสีย"

²⁴It happened about three months later, that it was told Judah, saying, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute; and moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burnt.”

²⁵เมื่อเขากำลังพานางออกมา นางก็ส่งคนไปหาพ่อผัวบอกว่า "ข้าพเจ้ามีครรภ์กับคนที่เป็นเจ้าของสิ่งนี้" และนางว่า "ขอท่านพิจารณาดูแหวนตรา เชือก และไม้พลองเหล่านี้ว่าเป็นของผู้ใด"

²⁵When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man, whose these are, I am with child.” She also said, “Please discern whose are these—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”

²⁶ยูดาห์รับไปพิจารณาดูรู้แล้วก็ว่า "หญิงคนนี้ชอบธรรมยิ่งกว่าเรา เหตุว่าเรามิได้ยกเขาให้แก่เช-ลาห์บุตรชายของเรา" ฝ่ายยูดาห์ก็มิได้สมสู่กับนางต่อไปอีก

²⁶Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

²⁷อยู่มาเมื่อถึงเวลากำหนดคลอดบุตร ดูเถิด ก็มีลูกแฝดอยู่ในครรภ์

²⁷It happened in the time of her travail, that behold, twins were in her womb.

²⁸ต่อมาเมื่อจะคลอดนั้นบุตรคนหนึ่งยื่นมือออกมาก่อน หญิงผดุงครรภ์จึงเอาด้ายแดงผูกไว้ที่ข้อมือและกล่าวว่า "คนนี้คลอดก่อน"

²⁸When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

²⁹ต่อมาเมื่อบุตรนั้นหดมือเข้าไป ดูเถิด บุตรอีกคนหนึ่งก็คลอดออกมาก่อน หญิงผดุงครรภ์จึงร้องว่า "เจ้าแหวกออกมาได้อย่างไร เจ้าได้แหวกออกมา" เหตุฉะนี้จึงเรียกบุตรนั้นว่า เปเรศ

²⁹It happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez. Perez means “breaking out.”

³⁰ภายหลังน้องชายเปเรศที่มีด้ายแดงผูกข้อมือนั้นก็คลอด จึงให้ชื่อว่า เศ-ราห์

³⁰Afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah. Zerah means “scarlet” or “brightness.”
