¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

²It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

³The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

⁴เมื่อพระเยซูทรงได้ยินแล้วก็ตรัสว่า "โรคนั้นจะไม่ถึงตาย แต่เกิดขึ้นเพื่อเชิดชูพระเกียรติของพระเจ้า เพื่อพระบุตรของพระเจ้าจะได้รับเกียรติเพราะโรคนั้น"

⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁶When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁸The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?”

⁹พระเยซูตรัสตอบว่า "วันหนึ่งมีสิบสองชั่วโมงมิใช่หรือ ถ้าผู้ใดเดินในตอนกลางวันเขาก็จะไม่สะดุด เพราะเขาเห็นความสว่างของโลกนี้

⁹Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰แต่ถ้าผู้ใดเดินในตอนกลางคืนเขาก็จะสะดุด เพราะไม่มีความสว่างในตัวเขา"

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹¹พระองค์ตรัสดังนั้นแล้วจึงตรัสกับเขาว่า "ลาซารัสสหายของเราหลับไปแล้ว แต่เราไปเพื่อจะปลุกเขาให้ตื่น"

¹¹He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹²The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹⁴ฉะนั้นพระเยซูจึงตรัสกับเขาตรงๆว่า "ลาซารัสตายแล้ว

¹⁴So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵เพื่อเห็นแก่ท่านทั้งหลายเราจึงยินดีที่เรามิได้อยู่ที่นั่น เพื่อท่านจะได้เชื่อ แต่ให้เราไปหาเขากันเถิด"

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁶โธมัสที่เรียกว่า ดิดุมัส จึงพูดกับเพื่อนสาวกว่า "ให้พวกเราไปด้วยเถิด เพื่อจะได้ตายด้วยกันกับพระองค์"

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, “Didymus” means “Twin” said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.”

¹⁷ครั้นพระเยซูเสด็จมาถึงก็ทรงทราบว่า เขาเอาลาซารัสไปไว้ในอุโมงค์ฝังศพสี่วันแล้ว

¹⁷So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁸หมู่บ้านเบธานีอยู่ใกล้กรุงเยรูซาเล็ม ห่างกันประมาณสามกิโลเมตร

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away.

¹⁹พวกยิวหลายคนได้มาหามารธาและมารีย์ เพื่อจะปลอบโยนเธอเรื่องน้องชายของเธอ

¹⁹Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

²⁰ครั้นมารธารู้ข่าวว่าพระเยซูกำลังเสด็จมา เธอก็ออกไปต้อนรับพระองค์ แต่มารีย์นั่งอยู่ในเรือน

²⁰Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²¹มารธาจึงทูลพระเยซูว่า "พระองค์เจ้าข้า ถ้าพระองค์อยู่ที่นี่ น้องชายของข้าพระองค์คงไม่ตาย

²¹Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²²แต่ถึงแม้เดี๋ยวนี้ข้าพระองค์ก็ทราบว่า สิ่งใดๆที่พระองค์จะทูลขอจากพระเจ้า พระเจ้าจะทรงโปรดประทานแก่พระองค์"

²²Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²³พระเยซูตรัสกับเธอว่า "น้องชายของเจ้าจะฟื้นขึ้นมาอีก"

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴มารธาทูลพระองค์ว่า "ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้วว่า เขาจะฟื้นขึ้นมาอีกในวันสุดท้ายเมื่อคนทั้งปวงจะฟื้นขึ้นมา"

²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁵พระเยซูตรัสกับเธอว่า "เราเป็นเหตุให้คนทั้งปวงเป็นขึ้นและมีชีวิต ผู้ที่เชื่อในเรานั้น ถึงแม้ว่าเขาตายแล้วก็ยังจะมีชีวิตอีก

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁶และทุกคนที่มีชีวิตและเชื่อในเราจะไม่ตายเลย เจ้าเชื่ออย่างนี้ไหม"

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁸เมื่อเธอทูลดังนี้แล้ว เธอก็กลับไปและเรียกมารีย์น้องสาวกระซิบว่า "พระอาจารย์เสด็จมาแล้ว และทรงเรียกเจ้า"

²⁸When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

²⁹When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

³⁰ฝ่ายพระเยซูยังไม่เสด็จเข้าไปในเมือง แต่ยังประทับอยู่ ณ ที่ซึ่งมารธาพบพระองค์นั้น

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³¹พวกยิวที่อยู่กับมารีย์ในเรือนและกำลังปลอบโยนเธออยู่ เมื่อเห็นมารีย์รีบลุกขึ้นและเดินออกไปจึงตามเธอไปพูดกันว่า "เธอจะไปร้องไห้ที่อุโมงค์"

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³²ครั้นมารีย์มาถึงที่ซึ่งพระเยซูประทับอยู่และเห็นพระองค์แล้ว จึงกราบลงที่พระบาทของพระองค์ทูลว่า "พระองค์เจ้าข้า ถ้าพระองค์ประทับอยู่ที่นี่ น้องชายของข้าพระองค์คงไม่ตาย"

³²Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³ฉะนั้นเมื่อพระเยซูทอดพระเนตรเห็นเธอร้องไห้ และพวกยิวที่มากับเธอร้องไห้ด้วย พระองค์ก็ทรงคร่ำครวญร้อนพระทัยและทรงเป็นทุกข์

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴และตรัสถามว่า "พวกเจ้าเอาศพเขาไปไว้ที่ไหน" เขาทูลพระองค์ว่า "พระองค์เจ้าข้า เชิญเสด็จมาดูเถิด"

³⁴and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵พระเยซูทรงพระกันแสง

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁶พวกยิวจึงกล่าวว่า "ดูเถิด พระองค์ทรงรักเขาเพียงไร"

³⁶The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁷และบางคนก็พูดว่า "ท่านผู้นี้ทำให้คนตาบอดมองเห็น จะทำให้คนนี้ไม่ตายไม่ได้หรือ"

³⁷Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁸พระเยซูทรงคร่ำครวญร้อนพระทัยอีก จึงเสด็จมาถึงอุโมงค์ฝังศพ อุโมงค์ฝังศพนั้นเป็นถ้ำ มีศิลาวางปิดปากไว้

³⁸Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹พระเยซูตรัสว่า "จงเอาศิลาออกเสีย" มารธาพี่สาวของผู้ตายจึงทูลพระองค์ว่า "พระองค์เจ้าข้า ป่านนี้ศพมีกลิ่นเหม็นแล้ว เพราะว่าเขาตายมาสี่วันแล้ว"

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰พระเยซูตรัสกับเธอว่า "เราบอกเจ้าแล้วมิใช่หรือว่า ถ้าเจ้าเชื่อ เจ้าก็จะได้เห็นสง่าราศีของพระเจ้า"

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹พวกเขาจึงเอาศิลาออกเสียจากที่ซึ่งผู้ตายวางอยู่นั้น พระเยซูทรงแหงนพระพักตร์ขึ้นตรัสว่า "ข้าแต่พระบิดา ข้าพระองค์ขอบพระคุณพระองค์ที่พระองค์ทรงโปรดฟังข้าพระองค์

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. NU omits “from the place where the dead man was lying.” Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴²ข้าพระองค์ทราบว่า พระองค์ทรงฟังข้าพระองค์อยู่เสมอ แต่ที่ข้าพระองค์กล่าวอย่างนี้ก็เพราะเห็นแก่ประชาชนที่ยืนอยู่ที่นี่ เพื่อเขาจะได้เชื่อว่าพระองค์ทรงใช้ข้าพระองค์มา"

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴³เมื่อพระองค์ตรัสดังนั้นแล้ว จึงเปล่งพระสุรเสียงตรัสว่า "ลาซารัสเอ๋ย จงออกมาเถิด"

⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ผู้ตายนั้นก็ออกมา มีผ้าพันศพพันมือและเท้า และที่หน้าก็มีผ้าพันอยู่ด้วย พระเยซูตรัสกับเขาทั้งหลายว่า "จงแก้แล้วปล่อยเขาไปเถิด"

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ดังนั้นพวกยิวหลายคนที่มาหามารีย์และได้เห็นการกระทำของพระเยซู ก็เชื่อในพระองค์

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶แต่พวกเขาบางคนไปหาพวกฟาริสี และเล่าเหตุการณ์ที่พระเยซูได้ทรงกระทำให้ฟัง

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁸ถ้าเราปล่อยเขาไว้อย่างนี้ คนทั้งปวงจะเชื่อถือเขา แล้วพวกโรมก็จะมาริบเอาทั้งที่และชนชาติของเราไป"

⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁹แต่คนหนึ่งในพวกเขา ชื่อคายาฟาสเป็นมหาปุโรหิตประจำการในปีนั้น กล่าวแก่เขาทั้งหลายว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายไม่รู้อะไรเสียเลย

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

⁵¹เขามิได้กล่าวอย่างนั้นตามใจชอบ แต่เพราะว่าเขาเป็นมหาปุโรหิตประจำการในปีนั้น จึงพยากรณ์ว่าพระเยซูจะสิ้นพระชนม์แทนชนชาตินั้น

⁵¹Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

⁵²และมิใช่แทนชนชาตินั้นอย่างเดียว แต่เพื่อจะรวบรวมบุตรทั้งหลายของพระเจ้าที่กระจัดกระจายไปนั้น ให้เข้าเป็นพวกเดียวกัน

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

⁵³ตั้งแต่วันนั้นเป็นต้นมา เขาทั้งหลายจึงปรึกษากันจะฆ่าพระองค์เสีย

⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵⁴เหตุฉะนั้นพระเยซูจึงไม่เสด็จในหมู่พวกยิวอย่างเปิดเผยอีก แต่ได้เสด็จออกจากที่นั่นไปยังถิ่นที่อยู่ใกล้ถิ่นทุรกันดาร ถึงเมืองหนึ่งชื่อเอฟราอิม และทรงพักอยู่ที่นั่นกับพวกสาวกของพระองค์

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

⁵⁵ขณะนั้นใกล้จะถึงเทศกาลปัสกาของพวกยิวแล้ว และคนเป็นอันมากได้ออกจากหัวเมืองนั้นขึ้นไปยังกรุงเยรูซาเล็มก่อนเทศกาลปัสกาเพื่อจะชำระตัว

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁶เขาทั้งหลายจึงแสวงหาพระเยซู และเมื่อเขาทั้งหลายยืนอยู่ในพระวิหารเขาก็พูดกันว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายคิดเห็นอย่างไร พระองค์จะไม่เสด็จมาในงานเทศกาลนี้หรือ"

⁵⁶Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

⁵⁷ฝ่ายพวกปุโรหิตใหญ่และพวกฟาริสีได้ออกคำสั่งไว้ว่า ถ้าผู้ใดรู้ว่าพระองค์อยู่ที่ไหน ก็ให้มาบอกพวกเขาเพื่อจะได้ไปจับพระองค์

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
