¹เยฟธาห์คนกิเลอาดเป็นทแกล้วทหาร แต่เป็นบุตรชายของหญิงแพศยา กิเลอาดให้กำเนิดบุตรชื่อเยฟธาห์

¹Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

²ภรรยาแท้ของกิเลอดาคลอดบุตรชายหลายคน และเมื่อพวกบุตรเหล่านั้นโตขึ้นแล้ว จึงผลักไสเยฟธาห์ออกไปเสียโดยกล่าวว่า "เจ้าจะมีส่วนในมรดกของครอบครัวบิดาเราไม่ได้ เพราะเจ้าเป็นลูกของหญิงคนอื่น"

²Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.”

³เยฟธาห์จึงหนีจากพี่น้องของตนไปอาศัยอยู่ที่แผ่นดินโทบ พวกนักเลงก็มั่วสุมกับเยฟธาห์และติดตามเขาไป

³Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

⁴ต่อมาภายหลังคนอัมโมนได้ทำสงครามกับคนอิสราเอล

⁴It happened after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

⁵และเมื่อคนอัมโมนทำสงครามกับอิสราเอลนั้น พวกผู้ใหญ่ของเมืองกิเลอาดได้ไปเพื่อจะพาเยฟธาห์มาจากแผ่นดินโทบ

⁵It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

⁶เขากล่าวแก่เยฟธาห์ว่า "จงมาเป็นหัวหน้าของเรา เพื่อเราจะได้ต่อสู้กับคนอัมโมน"

⁶and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

⁷แต่เยฟธาห์กล่าวแก่พวกผู้ใหญ่ของกิเลอาดว่า "ท่านไม่ได้เกลียดข้าพเจ้า และขับไล่ข้าพเจ้าเสียจากครอบครัวบิดาของข้าพเจ้าดอกหรือ เมื่อคราวทุกข์ยากท่านจะมาหาข้าพเจ้าทำไมเล่า"

⁷Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

⁸พวกผู้ใหญ่ของกิเลอาดจึงกล่าวแก่เยฟธาห์ว่า "เหตุที่เรากลับมาหาท่าน ณ บัดนี้ ก็ด้วยต้องการให้ท่านไปกับเราสู้รบกับคนอัมโมน แล้วมาเป็นหัวหน้าของเราที่จะปกครองชาวกิเลอาดทั้งปวง"

⁸The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

⁹เยฟธาห์จึงกล่าวแก่พวกผู้ใหญ่ของกิเลอาดว่า "ถ้าท่านให้ข้าพเจ้ากลับบ้านเพื่อทำศึกกับคนอัมโมน และถ้าพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงมอบเขาไว้ต่อหน้าข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าจะได้เป็นหัวหน้าของท่านหรือเปล่า"

⁹Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?”

¹⁰พวกผู้ใหญ่ของกิเลอาดจึงตอบเยฟธาห์ว่า "พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงเป็นพยานระหว่างเรา เราจะกระทำตามที่ท่านสั่งทุกประการ"

¹⁰The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.”

¹¹เยฟธาห์จึงไปกับพวกผู้ใหญ่ของกิเลอาด และประชาชนก็ตั้งท่านให้เป็นหัวหน้าและเป็นประมุขของเขา แล้วเยฟธาห์ก็กล่าวคำที่ตกลงกันทั้งสิ้นต่อพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์ที่เมืองมิสปาห์

¹¹Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

¹²เยฟธาห์จึงส่งผู้สื่อสารไปยังกษัตริย์คนอัมโมนถามว่า "ท่านมีเรื่องอะไรกับข้าพเจ้า ท่านจึงยกมาต่อสู้กับแผ่นดินของข้าพเจ้า"

¹²Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

¹³กษัตริย์คนอัมโมนตอบผู้สื่อสารของเยฟธาห์ว่า "เพราะว่าเมื่ออิสราเอลยกออกมาจากอียิปต์ได้ยึดแผ่นดินของเราไป ตั้งแต่แม่น้ำอารโนนถึงแม่น้ำยับบอกและถึงแม่น้ำจอร์แดน บัดนี้ ขอคืนแผ่นดินเหล่านั้นเสียโดยดี"

¹³The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

¹⁴และเยฟธาห์ก็ส่งผู้สื่อสารไปหากษัตริย์คนอัมโมนอีก

¹⁴Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

¹⁵ให้กล่าวว่า "เยฟธาห์กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อิสราเอลมิได้ยึดแผ่นดินของโมอับ หรือแผ่นดินของคนอัมโมน

¹⁵and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

¹⁶แต่เมื่ออิสราเอลออกจากอียิปต์ เขาได้เดินไปทางถิ่นทุรกันดารถึงทะเลแดง และมาถึงคาเดช

¹⁶but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds , and came to Kadesh;

¹⁷อิสราเอลจึงส่งผู้สื่อสารไปยังกษัตริย์เอโดมกล่าวว่า `ข้าพเจ้าขออนุญาตยกผ่านแผ่นดินของท่านไป' แต่กษัตริย์เอโดมไม่ฟัง และก็ได้ส่งคำขอเช่นเดียวกันไปยังกษัตริย์เมืองโมอับด้วย แต่ท่านก็ไม่ตกลง ดังนั้นอิสราเอลจึงยับยั้งอยู่ที่คาเดช

¹⁷then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁸แล้วเขาก็เดินไปในถิ่นทุรกันดารอ้อมแผ่นดินเอโดม และแผ่นดินโมอับ และมาทางด้านตะวันออกของแผ่นดินโมอับ และตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่ฟากแม่น้ำอารโนนข้างโน้น แต่เขามิได้เข้าไปในเขตแดนของโมอับ เพราะว่าแม่น้ำอารโนนเป็นพรมแดนของโมอับ

¹⁸Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁹อิสราเอลจึงส่งผู้สื่อสารไปหาสิโหนกษัตริย์คนอาโมไรต์ กษัตริย์กรุงเฮชโบน อิสราเอลเรียนท่านว่า `ขอให้พวกข้าพเจ้ายกผ่านแผ่นดินของท่านไปยังสถานที่ของข้าพเจ้า'

¹⁹Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

²⁰แต่สิโหนไม่วางใจที่จะให้อิสราเอลยกผ่านเขตแดนของตน ฉะนั้นสิโหนจึงได้รวบรวมประชาชนทั้งหมดของท่าน ตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่ยาฮาส และสู้รบกับอิสราเอล

²⁰But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²¹และพระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของอิสราเอลทรงมอบสิโหนและประชาชนทั้งหมดของท่านไว้ในมืออิสราเอล คนอิสราเอลก็โจมตีเขา อิสราเอลจึงยึดครองแผ่นดินทั้งสิ้นของคนอาโมไรต์ผู้ซึ่งเป็นชาวเมืองนั้น

²¹Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

²²และเขายึดเขตแดนทั้งหมดของคนอาโมไรต์ตั้งแต่แม่น้ำอารโนนถึงแม่น้ำยับบอก และตั้งแต่ถิ่นทุรกันดารถึงแม่น้ำจอร์แดน

²²They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

²³ดังนั้นพระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของอิสราเอลจึงขับไล่คนอาโมไรต์ออกเสียต่อหน้าอิสราเอลประชาชนของพระองค์ ฝ่ายท่านจะมาถือเอาเป็นกรรมสิทธิ์เช่นนั้นหรือ

²³So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

²⁴ท่านไม่ถือกรรมสิทธิ์สิ่งซึ่งพระเคโมชพระของท่านมอบให้ท่านยึดครองดอกหรือ พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของเราขับไล่ผู้ใดไปให้พ้นหน้าเรา เราก็ยึดครองที่ของผู้นั้น

²⁴Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

²⁵ฝ่ายท่านจะดีกว่าบาลาคบุตรชายสิปโปร์กษัตริย์เมืองโมอับหรือ ท่านเคยแข่งขันกับอิสราเอลหรือ ท่านเคยต่อสู้กับเขาทั้งหลายหรือ

²⁵Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

²⁶เมื่ออิสราเอลอาศัยอยู่ในกรุงเฮชโบนและชนบทของกรุงนั้น และในเมืองอาโรเออร์และชนบทของเมืองนั้น และอยู่ในบรรดาหัวเมืองที่ตั้งอยู่ตามฝั่งแม่น้ำอารโนนถึงสามร้อยปี ทำไมท่านไม่เรียกคืนเสียภายในเวลานั้นเล่า

²⁶While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time?

²⁷ฉะนี้ข้าพเจ้าจึงมิได้กระทำความผิดต่อท่าน แต่ท่านได้กระทำความผิดต่อข้าพเจ้าในการที่ทำสงครามกับข้าพเจ้า ขอพระเยโฮวาห์จอมผู้พิพากษาเป็นผู้ทรงพิพากษาระหว่างคนอิสราเอลและคนอัมโมนในวันนี้"

²⁷I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

²⁸แต่กษัตริย์ของคนอัมโมนมิได้เชื่อฟังในคำของเยฟธาห์ซึ่งท่านส่งไปให้

²⁸However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

²⁹พระวิญญาณของพระเยโฮวาห์ก็มาสถิตกับเยฟธาห์ ท่านจึงยกผ่านกิเลอาดและมนัสเสห์และผ่านมิสปาห์แห่งกิเลอาด และจากมิสปาห์แห่งกิเลอาด ท่านยกผ่านต่อไปถึงที่คนอัมโมน

²⁹Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

³⁰และเยฟธาห์ปฏิญาณต่อพระเยโฮวาห์ว่า "ถ้าพระองค์ทรงมอบคนอัมโมนไว้ในมือของข้าพระองค์แล้ว

³⁰Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

³¹ผู้ใดที่ออกมาจากประตูเรือนของข้าพระองค์เพื่อต้อนรับข้าพระองค์เมื่อข้าพระองค์กลับมาจากคนอัมโมนนั้นด้วยความสงบแล้ว ผู้นั้นจะต้องเป็นของของพระเยโฮวาห์ และข้าพระองค์จะถวายผู้นั้นเป็นเครื่องเผาบูชา"

³¹then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

³²แล้วเยฟธาห์จึงยกข้ามไปสู้รบกับคนอัมโมน และพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงมอบเขาไว้ในมือของท่าน

³²So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

³³และท่านได้ประหารเขาจากอาโรเออร์จนถึงที่ใกล้ๆเมืองมินนิทรวมยี่สิบหัวเมือง และไกลไปจนถึงที่ราบแห่งสวนองุ่น ผู้คนล้มตายมาก คนอัมโมนจึงพ่ายแพ้ต่อหน้าคนอิสราเอล

³³He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

³⁴แล้วเยฟธาห์ก็กลับมาบ้านที่มิสปาห์ ดูเถิด บุตรสาวของท่านถือรำมะนาเต้นโลดออกมาต้อนรับท่าน เธอเป็นบุตรคนเดียว นอกจากบุตรสาวคนนี้ท่านไม่มีบุตรชายและบุตรสาวเลย

³⁴Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁵และต่อมาเมื่อท่านเห็นเธอแล้ว ท่านก็ฉีกเสื้อผ้าของท่าน กล่าวว่า "อนิจจา ลูกสาวเอ๋ย เจ้าให้พ่อแย่แล้ว เพราะเจ้าเป็นเหตุให้พ่อเดือดร้อนมากยิ่ง เพราะพ่อได้อ้าปากปฏิญาณต่อพระเยโฮวาห์ไว้ จะคืนคำก็ไม่ได้"

³⁵It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

³⁶เธอจึงพูดกับพ่อว่า "คุณพ่อขา เมื่อคุณพ่อออกปากสัญญากับพระเยโฮวาห์ไว้อย่างไร ขอคุณพ่อกระทำกับลูกตามคำที่ออกจากปากของคุณพ่อเถิด เพราะพระเยโฮวาห์ได้ทรงแก้แค้นคนอัมโมนศัตรูเพื่อคุณพ่อแล้ว"

³⁶She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

³⁷และเธอพูดกับบิดาของเธอว่า "ขอให้ลูกอย่างนี้เถิด ขอปล่อยลูกไว้สักสองเดือน ลูกจะได้จากบ้านและลงไปบนภูเขา ร้องไห้คร่ำครวญถึงความเป็นพรหมจารีของลูก ลูกกับเพื่อนๆของลูก"

³⁷She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

³⁸ท่านจึงตอบว่า "ไปเถิด" และท่านก็ปล่อยเธอไปสองเดือน เธอก็ออกไป เธอและพวกเพื่อนของเธอแล้วร้องไห้คร่ำครวญถึงความเป็นพรหมจารีของเธอบนภูเขา

³⁸He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

³⁹อยู่มาเมื่อครบสองเดือนแล้ว เธอก็กลับมาหาบิดาของเธอ และท่านก็กระทำกับเธอตามคำปฏิญาณที่ได้ปฏิญาณไว้ เธอยังไม่เคยสมสู่กับชายใดเลย และก็เป็นธรรมเนียมในอิสราเอล

³⁹It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,

⁴⁰คือที่บุตรสาวชาวอิสราเอลไปร้องไห้ไว้ทุกข์ให้บุตรสาวของเยฟธาห์คนกิเลอาดปีละสี่วัน

⁴⁰that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
