1อยู่มาในสมัยนั้น เมื่อไม่มีกษัตริย์ในอิสราเอล มีคนเลวีคนหนึ่งอาศัยอยู่ที่แดนเทือกเขาเอฟราอิม แถบที่ไกลออกไปโน้น เขาได้หญิงคนหนึ่งจากเบธเลเฮมในยูดาห์มาเป็นภรรยาน้อย
1It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.
2ภรรยาน้อยนั้นเล่นชู้จึงทิ้งสามีเสียกลับไปอยู่บ้านบิดาของนางที่เบธเลเฮมในยูดาห์ อยู่ที่นั่นสักสี่เดือน
2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.
3สามีของนางก็ลุกขึ้นไปตามนาง เพื่อไปพูดกับนางด้วยจิตเมตตาและจะพานางกลับ เขาพาคนใช้คนหนึ่งและลาคู่หนึ่งไปด้วย นางพาเขาเข้าในบ้านบิดาของนาง เมื่อบิดาของผู้หญิงเห็นเข้าก็มีความยินดีต้อนรับเขา
3Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4พ่อตาของเขาคือบิดาของผู้หญิงหน่วงเหนี่ยวเขา และเขาพักอยู่ด้วยสามวัน เขาก็กินและดื่ม และพักนอนอยู่ที่นั่น
4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.
5อยู่มาถึงวันที่สี่เขาทั้งหลายก็ตื่นขึ้นแต่เช้ามืด และคนนั้นลุกขึ้นจะออกเดิน แต่พ่อของผู้หญิงพูดกับบุตรเขยของเขาว่า "จงรับประทานอาหารอีกสักหน่อยหนึ่งให้ชื่นใจแล้วภายหลังจึงค่อยออกเดิน"
5It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”
6ชายสองคนนั้นก็นั่งลงรับประทานและดื่มด้วยกัน และบิดาของผู้หญิงก็บอกชายนั้นว่า "จงค้างอีกสักคืนเถิด กระทำจิตใจให้เบิกบาน"
6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”
7เมื่อชายคนนั้นลุกขึ้นจะออกเดิน พ่อตาก็ชักชวนไว้ จนเขาต้องพักอยู่ที่นั่นอีก
7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.
8ในวันที่ห้าเขาก็ตื่นแต่เช้าตรู่เพื่อจะออกเดินทางไป บิดาของหญิงนั้นพูดว่า "ขอให้ชื่นใจเถิด" เขาทั้งสองก็อยู่จนเวลาบ่ายรับประทานอยู่ด้วยกันอีก
8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines”; and they both ate.
9เมื่อชายคนนั้นและภรรยาน้อยกับคนใช้ลุกขึ้นจะออกเดิน พ่อตาของเขาคือบิดาของผู้หญิงก็บอกเขาว่า "ดูเถิด นี่ก็บ่ายใกล้ค่ำแล้ว ขอค้างอยู่อีกคืนหนึ่งเถิด ดูเถิด จะสิ้นวันอยู่แล้ว พักนอนที่นี่เถิด เพื่อใจของเจ้าจะเบิกบาน พรุ่งนี้เช้าขอเจ้าตื่นแต่เช้าเพื่อออกเดินทาง เจ้าจะได้ไปบ้าน"
9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”
10แต่ชายคนนั้นไม่ยอมค้างอีกคืนหนึ่ง เขาจึงลุกขึ้นออกเดินทางไปจนถึงตรงข้ามกับเมืองเยบุส คือเยรูซาเล็ม เขามีลาสองตัวที่มีอาน และภรรยาน้อยก็ไปด้วย
10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.
11เมื่อเขามาใกล้เมืองเยบุสก็บ่ายมากแล้ว คนใช้จึงเรียนนายของเขาว่า "มาเถิด ให้เราแวะเข้าไปพักในเมืองของคนเยบุสเถิด ค้างคืนอยู่ในเมืองนี้แหละ"
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.”
12นายของเขาตอบว่า "เราจะไม่แวะเข้าไปในเมืองของคนต่างด้าว ผู้ที่ไม่ใช่คนอิสราเอล เราจะผ่านไปถึงเมืองกิเบอาห์"
12His master said to him, “We won’t turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”
13เขาจึงบอกคนใช้ว่า "มาเถิด ให้เราเข้าไปใกล้ที่เหล่านี้แห่งหนึ่ง และค้างอยู่ที่กิเบอาห์หรือที่รามาห์"
13He said to his servant, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”
14เขาจึงเดินทางผ่านไป เมื่อเขามาใกล้กิเบอาห์ซึ่งเป็นของคนเบนยามินดวงอาทิตย์ก็ตกแล้ว
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
15เขาจึงแวะเข้าไปจะค้างคืนที่เมืองกิเบอาห์ เขาก็แวะเข้าไปนั่งอยู่ที่ถนนในเมืองนั้น เพราะไม่มีใครเชิญให้เขาเข้าไปค้างในบ้าน
15They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.
16ดูเถิด มีชายแก่คนหนึ่งเข้ามาเมื่อเลิกจากงานนาเป็นเวลาเย็นแล้ว เขาเป็นชาวแดนเทือกเขาเอฟราอิมมาอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองกิเบอาห์ แต่ชาวเมืองนั้นเป็นคนเบนยามิน
16Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17เมื่อเขาเงยหน้าขึ้นเห็นผู้เดินทางคนนั้นนั่งอยู่ที่ถนนในเมือง ชายแก่คนนั้นก็ถามว่า "ท่านจะไปไหนและมาจากไหน"
17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”
18ชายคนนั้นจึงตอบเขาว่า "เราเดินทางจากเบธเลเฮมในยูดาห์ จะไปที่แดนเทือกเขาเอฟราอิมแถบที่ไกลออกไปโน้นซึ่งข้าพเจ้ามาจากที่นั่น ข้าพเจ้าไปเบธเลเฮมในยูดาห์มา และข้าพเจ้าจะกลับไปพระนิเวศพระเยโฮวาห์ ไม่มีใครเชิญข้าพเจ้าเข้าไปพักในบ้าน
18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.
19ฟางและอาหารที่จะเลี้ยงลา พวกเราก็มีพร้อมแล้ว ทั้งอาหารและน้ำองุ่นที่เลี้ยงตนทั้งเลี้ยงหญิงคนนี้ และชายหนุ่มที่อยู่กับพวกผู้รับใช้ของท่านก็มีอยู่แล้ว ไม่ขาดสิ่งใดเลย"
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything.”
20ชายแก่คนนั้นจึงพูดว่า "ขอท่านเป็นสุขสบายเถิด ถ้าท่านขาดสิ่งใด ข้าพเจ้าขอเป็นธุระทั้งสิ้น ขอแต่อย่านอนที่ถนนนี้เลย"
20The old man said, “Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don’t lodge in the street.”
21เขาจึงพาชายคนนั้นเข้าไปในบ้าน เอาอาหารให้ลา ต่างก็ล้างเท้าของตน และรับประทานอาหารและดื่ม
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.
22เมื่อเขากำลังทำให้จิตใจเบิกบาน ดูเถิด ชาวเมืองนั้นที่เป็นคนอันธพาลมาล้อมเรือนไว้ ทุบประตู ร้องบอกชายแก่ผู้เป็นเจ้าของบ้านว่า "ส่งชายที่เข้ามาอยู่ในบ้านของแกมาให้เราสังวาส"
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!”
23ชายผู้เป็นเจ้าของบ้านก็ออกไปพูดกับเขาว่า "อย่าเลย พี่น้องของข้าพเจ้า ขออย่ากระทำการร้ายเช่นนี้เลย เมื่อชายคนนี้มาอาศัยบ้านของข้าพเจ้าแล้ว ขออย่ากระทำสิ่งที่โง่เขลานี้เลย
23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.
24ดูเถิด นี่ มีลูกสาวพรหมจารีคนหนึ่งและเมียน้อยของเขา ข้าพเจ้าจะพาออกมาให้ท่านเดี๋ยวนี้ จงกระทำหยามเกียรติหรือทำอะไรแก่พวกเขาตามชอบใจเถิด แต่ขออย่าทำลามกกับชายคนนี้เลย"
24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”
25แต่คนเหล่านั้นไม่ยอมฟังเสียง ชายคนนั้นจึงฉวยภรรยาน้อยของตนผลักนางออกไปให้เขา เขาก็สมสู่ทำทารุณตลอดคืนจนรุ่งเช้า พอรุ่งสางๆ เขาทั้งหลายก็ปล่อยนางไป
25But the men wouldn’t listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go.
26พอแจ้งผู้หญิงนั้นก็กลับมาล้มลงที่ประตูบ้านซึ่งนายของตนพักอยู่ จนสว่างดี
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
27รุ่งเช้านายของนางก็ลุกขึ้นเมื่อเปิดประตูบ้าน จะออกเดินทาง ดูเถิด ผู้หญิงซึ่งเป็นภรรยาน้อยของเขาก็นอนอยู่ที่ประตูบ้าน มือเหยียดออกไปถึงธรณีประตู
27Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28เขาจึงบอกนางว่า "ลุกขึ้นไปกันเถิด" แต่ก็ไม่มีคำตอบ เขาจึงเอานางขึ้นหลังลา ชายนั้นก็ลุกขึ้นเดินทางไปบ้านของตน
28He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
29เมื่อถึงบ้านแล้ว ก็เอามีดฟันศพภรรยาน้อยออกเป็นท่อนๆพร้อมกับกระดูก สิบสองท่อนด้วยกันส่งไปทั่วเขตแดนอิสราเอล
29When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
30ทุกคนที่เห็นก็พูดว่า "เรื่องอย่างนี้ไม่มีใครเคยเห็นตั้งแต่สมัยคนอิสราเอลยกออกจากแผ่นดินอียิปต์จนถึงวันนี้ จงตรึกตรองปรึกษากันดู แล้วก็ว่ากันไปเถิด"
30It was so, that all who saw it said, “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
