¹ฝ่ายอาบีเมเลคบุตรชายเยรุบบาอัลก็ขึ้นไปหาญาติของมารดาที่เมืองเชเคม แล้วพูดกับเขาและกับครอบครัวที่บ้านของตาว่า

¹Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

²"ขอบอกความนี้ให้เข้าหูบรรดาชาวเมืองเชเคมเถิดว่า `จะให้บุตรชายเยรุบบาอัลทั้งเจ็ดสิบคนครอบครองท่านทั้งหลายดี หรือจะให้ผู้เดียวปกครองดี' ขอระลึกไว้ด้วยว่า ตัวข้าพเจ้านี้เป็นกระดูกและเนื้อเดียวกับท่านทั้งหลาย"

²“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

³ฝ่ายญาติของมารดาของเขาก็กล่าวคำทั้งหมดเหล่านี้ให้เข้าหูบรรดาชาวเชเคม จิตใจของชาวเมืองก็เอนเอียงเข้าข้างอาบีเมเลค ด้วยเขากล่าวกันว่า "เขาเป็นญาติของเรา"

³His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”

⁴เขาจึงเอาเงินเจ็ดสิบแผ่นออกจากวิหารพระบาอัลเบรีทมอบให้อาบีเมเลค อาบีเมเลคก็เอาเงินนั้นไปจ้างนักเลงหัวไม้ไว้ติดตามตน

⁴They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

⁵เขาจึงไปที่บ้านบิดาของเขาที่เมืองโอฟราห์ฆ่าพี่น้องของตน คือบุตรชายเยรุบบาอัลทั้งเจ็ดสิบคนที่ศิลาแผ่นเดียว เหลือแต่โยธามบุตรชายสุดท้องของเยรุบบาอัล เพราะเขาซ่อนตัวเสีย

⁵He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

⁶ชาวเมืองเชเคมและชาววงศ์วานมิลโลทั้งสิ้นก็มาประชุมพร้อมกัน ตั้งอาบีเมเลคให้เป็นกษัตริย์ที่ข้างที่ราบแห่งเสาสำคัญที่อยู่ในเมืองเชเคม

⁶All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

⁷เมื่อมีคนไปบอกโยธาม เขาก็ขึ้นไปยืนอยู่บนยอดภูเขาเกริซิม แผดเสียงร้องให้เขาทั้งหลายฟังว่า "ชาวเมืองเชเคมเอ๋ย ขอจงฟังข้าพเจ้า เพื่อพระเจ้าจะทรงฟังเสียงของท่าน

⁷When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

⁸ครั้งหนึ่งต้นไม้ต่างๆได้ออกไปเจิมตั้งต้นไม้ต้นหนึ่งไว้เป็นกษัตริย์ เขาจึงไปเชิญต้นมะกอกเทศว่า `เชิญท่านปกครองเราเถิด'

⁸The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

⁹แต่ต้นมะกอกเทศตอบเขาว่า `จะให้เราทิ้งน้ำมันของเรา ซึ่งเขาใช้ถวายเกียรติแด่พระเจ้าและแก่มนุษย์ เพื่อไปกวัดแกว่งอยู่เหนือต้นไม้ทั้งปวงหรือ'

⁹“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my fatness, with which by me they honor God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

¹⁰แล้วต้นไม้เหล่านั้นจึงไปพูดกับต้นมะเดื่อว่า `เชิญท่านมาปกครองเหนือเราเถิด'

¹⁰“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹¹แต่ต้นมะเดื่อตอบเขาว่า `จะให้เราทิ้งรสหวานและผลดีของเราเสีย และไปกวัดแกว่งอยู่เหนือต้นไม้ทั้งหลายหรือ'

¹¹“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

¹²ต้นไม้เหล่านั้นก็ไปพูดกับเถาองุ่นว่า `เชิญท่านมาปกครองเหนือเราเถิด'

¹²“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹³แต่เถาองุ่นกล่าวแก่เขาว่า `จะให้เราทิ้งน้ำองุ่นของเรา อันเป็นที่ชื่นใจพระเจ้าและมนุษย์ ไปกวัดแกว่งอยู่เหนือต้นไม้ทั้งหลายหรือ'

¹³“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

¹⁴บรรดาต้นไม้ก็ไปพูดกับต้นหนามว่า `เชิญท่านมาปกครองเหนือเราเถิด'

¹⁴“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹⁵ต้นหนามจึงตอบต้นไม้เหล่านั้นว่า `ถ้าแม้ท่านทั้งหลายจะเจิมตั้งเราให้เป็นกษัตริย์ของเจ้าทั้งหลายจริงๆ จงมาอาศัยใต้ร่มของเราเถิด มิฉะนั้นก็ให้ไฟเกิดจากต้นหนามเผาผลาญต้นสนสีดาร์เลบานอนเสีย'

¹⁵“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

¹⁶บัดนี้ซึ่งเจ้าทั้งหลายตั้งอาบีเมเลคเป็นกษัตริย์นั้น ถ้าทำด้วยความจริงใจและเที่ยงธรรม และถ้าได้กระทำให้เหมาะต่อเยรุบบาอัลและครอบครัวของท่าน สมกับความดีที่มือท่านได้กระทำไว้

¹⁶“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands

¹⁷(ด้วยว่าบิดาของเราได้รบพุ่งเพื่อเจ้าทั้งหลาย และเสี่ยงชีวิตช่วยเจ้าทั้งหลายให้พ้นจากมือพวกมีเดียน

¹⁷(for my father fought for you, and risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

¹⁸แต่ในวันนี้เจ้าทั้งหลายได้ลุกขึ้นประทุษร้ายต่อครอบครัวบิดาของเรา ได้ฆ่าบุตรชายทั้งเจ็ดสิบคนของท่านเสียบนศิลาแผ่นเดียว แล้วตั้งอาบีเมเลคบุตรชายของสาวคนใช้ขึ้นเป็นกษัตริย์ปกครองเหนือชาวเชเคม เพราะว่าเขาเป็นญาติของเจ้าทั้งหลาย)

¹⁸and you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

¹⁹ถ้าเจ้าทั้งหลายได้กระทำด้วยความจริงใจและเที่ยงธรรมต่อเยรุบบาอัลและครองครัวของท่านในวันนี้ ก็จงชื่นชมในอาบีเมเลคเถิด และให้เขามีความชื่นชมยินดีในเจ้าทั้งหลายด้วย

¹⁹if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

²⁰แต่ถ้าไม่เป็นอย่างนั้น ก็ขอให้ไฟออกมาจากอาบีเมเลค เผาผลาญชาวเมืองเชเคมและวงศ์วานมิลโล และให้ไฟออกมาจากชาวเมืองเชเคมและจากวงศ์วานมิลโลเผาผลาญอาบีเมเลคเสีย"

²⁰but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.”

²¹โยธามก็รีบหนีไปยังเบเออร์อาศัยอยู่ที่นั่น เพราะกลัวอาบีเมเลคพี่ชายของตน

²¹Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

²²เมื่ออาบีเมเลคครอบครองอิสราเอลอยู่ได้สามปีแล้ว

²²Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

²³พระเจ้าทรงใช้วิญญาณชั่วเข้าแทรกระหว่างอาบีเมเลคกับชาวเมืองเชเคม ชาวเมืองเชเคมก็ทรยศต่ออาบีเมเลค

²³God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

²⁴เพื่อความทารุณที่เขาได้กระทำแก่บุตรชายเจ็ดสิบคนของเยรุบบาอัลจะสนอง และโลหิตของคนเหล่านั้นจะได้ตกแก่อาบีเมเลค พี่น้องผู้ได้ประหารเขาและตกแก่ชาวเมืองเชเคม ผู้เสริมกำลังมืออาบีเมเลคให้ฆ่าพี่น้องของตน

²⁴that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

²⁵ชาวเมืองเชเคมได้วางคนซุ่มซ่อนไว้คอยดักอาบีเมเลคที่บนยอดภูเขา เขาก็ปล้นคนทั้งปวงที่ผ่านไปมาทางนั้น และมีคนบอกอาบีเมเลคให้ทราบ

²⁵The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

²⁶ฝ่ายกาอัลบุตรชายเอเบดกับญาติของเขาเข้าไปในเมืองเชเคม ชาวเชเคมไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจกาอัล

²⁶Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

²⁷จึงพากันออกไปในสวนองุ่นเก็บผลมาย่ำ ทำการเลี้ยงสมโภชในวัดพระของเขา เขารับประทานและดื่ม และด่าแช่งอาบีเมเลคด้วย

²⁷They went out into the field, and harvested their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.

²⁸กาอัลบุตรชายเอเบดจึงกล่าวว่า "อาบีเมเลคคือใคร และเราชาวเชเคมเป็นใครกันจึงต้องมาปรนนิบัติเขา เขาเป็นบุตรชายของเยรุบบาอัลมิใช่หรือ และเศบุลเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่ของเขามิใช่หรือ จงปรนนิบัติคนฮาโมร์บิดาของเชเคมเถิด เราจะปรนนิบัติอาบีเมเลคทำไมเล่า

²⁸Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

²⁹ถ้าคนเมืองนี้อยู่ใต้ปกครองเรานะ เราจะถอดอาบีเมเลคเสีย" เขาจึงท้าอาบีเมเลคว่า "จงเพิ่มกองทัพของท่านขึ้นแล้วออกมาเถิด"

²⁹Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army, and come out!”

³⁰พอเศบุลเจ้าเมืองได้ยินถ้อยคำของกาอัลบุตรชายเอเบดก็โกรธ

³⁰When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

³¹จึงส่งผู้สื่อสารไปยังอาบีเมเลคอย่างลับๆกล่าวว่า "ดูเถิด กาอัลบุตรชายเอเบดและญาติของเขามาที่เมืองเชเคม ดูเถิด พวกเขายุแหย่เมืองนั้นให้ต่อสู้กับท่าน

³¹He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.

³²บัดนี้ขอท่านจงลุกขึ้นในเวลากลางคืน ทั้งท่านและคนที่อยู่กับท่าน ไปซุ่มคอยอยู่ในทุ่งนา

³²Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field:

³³รุ่งเช้าพอดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นท่านจงลุกขึ้นแต่เช้าตรู่ รีบรุกเข้าเมือง และดูเถิด เมื่อกาอัลกับกองทัพออกมาต่อสู้ท่าน ท่านจงกระทำแก่เขาตามแต่โอกาสจะอำนวย"

³³and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early, and rush on the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”

³⁴ฝ่ายอาบีเมเลค และกองทัพทั้งสิ้นที่อยู่กับท่านก็ลุกขึ้นในเวลากลางคืน แบ่งออกเป็นสี่กองไปซุ่มคอยสู้เมืองเชเคม

³⁴Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

³⁵กาอัลบุตรชายเอเบดก็ออกไปยืนอยู่ที่ทางเข้าประตูเมือง อาบีเมเลคก็ลุกขึ้นพร้อมกับกองทัพที่อยู่กับท่าน ออกมาจากที่ซุ่มซ่อน

³⁵Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.

³⁶และเมื่อกาอัลเห็นกองทัพ จึงพูดกับเศบุลว่า "ดูเถิด กองทัพกำลังเคลื่อนลงมาจากยอดภูเขา" เศบุลตอบเขาว่า "ท่านเห็นเงาภูเขาเป็นคนไปกระมัง"

³⁶When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.”

³⁷กาอัลพูดขึ้นอีกว่า "ดูซิ กองทัพกำลังออกมาจากกลางแผ่นดินกองหนึ่ง และกองทัพอีกกองหนึ่งกำลังออกมาจากทางที่ราบเมโอเนนิม"

³⁷Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”

³⁸เศบุลก็กล่าวแก่กาอัลว่า "ปากของท่านอยู่ที่ไหนเดี๋ยวนี้ ท่านผู้ที่กล่าวว่า `อาบีเมเลคคือผู้ใด ที่เราต้องปรนนิบัติ' คนเหล่านี้เป็นคนที่ท่านหมิ่นประมาทมิใช่หรือ จงยกออกไปสู้รบกับเขาเถิด"

³⁸Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”

³⁹กาอัลก็เดินนำหน้ากองทัพเชเคมออกไปต่อสู้กับอาบีเมเลค

³⁹Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

⁴⁰อาบีเมเลคก็ขับไล่กาอัลหนีไป มีคนถูกบาดเจ็บล้มตายเป็นอันมาก จนถึงทางเข้าประตูเมือง

⁴⁰Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.

⁴¹ฝ่ายอาบีเมเลคก็อาศัยอยู่ที่อารูมาห์ และเศบุลก็ขับไล่กาอัลกับญาติของเขาออกไปไม่ให้อยู่ที่เชเคมต่อไป

⁴¹Abimelech lived at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

⁴²ต่อมารุ่งขึ้น มีชาวเมืองออกไปที่ทุ่งนา อาบีเมเลคก็ทราบเรื่อง

⁴²It happened on the next day, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

⁴³ท่านจึงแบ่งคนของท่านออกเป็นสามกอง ซุ่มคอยอยู่ที่ทุ่งนา ท่านมองดู ดูเถิด คนออกมาจากในเมือง ท่านจึงลุกขึ้นประหารเขา

⁴³He took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came forth out of the city; He rose up against them, and struck them.

⁴⁴ส่วนอาบีเมเลคกับทหารที่อยู่ด้วยก็รุกไปยืนอยู่ที่ทางเข้าประตูเมือง ฝ่ายทหารอีกสองกองก็รุกเข้าโจมตีคนทั้งหมดที่ในทุ่งนาประหารเสีย

⁴⁴Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field, and struck them.

⁴⁵อาบีเมเลคโจมตีเมืองนั้นตลอดวันยังค่ำ ยึดเมืองนั้นได้ และฆ่าฟันประชาชนที่อยู่ในเมืองนั้นเสีย ทั้งทำลายเมืองนั้นเสียด้วย แล้วก็หว่านเกลือลงไป

⁴⁵Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and killed the people who were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

⁴⁶เมื่อบรรดาชาวบ้านหอเชเคมได้ยินเช่นนั้น ก็หนีเข้าไปอยู่ในป้อมในวัดของพระเบรีท

⁴⁶When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

⁴⁷มีคนไปเรียนอาบีเมเลคว่า บรรดาชาวบ้านหอเชเคมไปมั่วสุมกันอยู่

⁴⁷It was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

⁴⁸อาบีเมเลคก็ขึ้นไปบนภูเขาศัลโมน ทั้งท่านกับบรรดาคนที่อยู่ด้วย อาบีเมเลคถือขวานตัดกิ่งไม้ใส่บ่าแบกมา ท่านจึงบอกคนที่อยู่ด้วยว่า "เจ้าเห็นข้าทำอะไร จงรีบไปทำอย่างข้าเถิด"

⁴⁸Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”

⁴⁹ดังนั้นคนทั้งปวงก็ตัดกิ่งไม้แบกตามอาบีเมเลคไปสุมไว้ ณ ที่ป้อม แล้วก็จุดไผเผาป้อมนั้น ชาวบ้านหอเชเคมก็ตายหมดด้วย ทั้งชายและหญิงประมาณหนึ่งพันคน

⁴⁹All the people likewise each cut down his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire on them; so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

⁵⁰อาบีเมเลคไปยังเมืองเธเบศตั้งค่ายประชิดเมืองเธเบศไว้ และยึดเมืองนั้นได้

⁵⁰Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

⁵¹แต่ในเมืองมีหอรบแห่งหนึ่ง ประชาชนเมืองนั้นทั้งสิ้นก็หนีเข้าไปอยู่ในหอทั้งผู้ชายและผู้หญิง ปิดประตูขังตนเองเสีย เขาก็ขึ้นไปบนหลังคาหอรบ

⁵¹But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.

⁵²อาบีเมเลคยกมาถึงหอรบนี้ ได้ต่อสู้กัน จนเข้ามาใกล้ประตูหอรบได้ จะเอาไฟเผา

⁵²Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

⁵³มีหญิงคนหนึ่งเอาหินโม่ชิ้นบนทุ่มศีรษะอาบีเมเลค กะโหลกศีรษะของท่านแตก

⁵³A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.

⁵⁴ท่านจึงรีบร้องบอกคนหนุ่มที่ถืออาวุธของท่านว่า "เอาดาบฟันเราเสียเพื่อคนจะไม่กล่าวว่า `ผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งฆ่าเขาตาย'" ชายหนุ่มของท่านคนนั้นก็แทงท่านทะลุถึงแก่ความตาย

⁵⁴Then he called hastily to the young man his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword, and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”

⁵⁵เมื่อคนอิสราเอลเห็นว่าอาบีเมเลคสิ้นชีวิตแล้ว ต่างคนก็กลับไปยังที่ของตน

⁵⁵When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his place.

⁵⁶ดังนี้แหละพระเจ้าทรงสนองความชั่วที่อาบีเมเลคได้กระทำต่อบิดาของตนที่ได้ฆ่าพี่น้องเจ็ดสิบคนของตนเสีย

⁵⁶Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father, in killing his seventy brothers;

⁵⁷และพระเจ้าทรงกระทำให้บรรดาความชั่วร้ายของชาวเชเคมกลับตกบนศีรษะของเขาทั้งหลายเอง คำสาปแช่งของโยธามบุตรชายเยรุบบาอัลก็ตกอยู่บนเขาทั้งหลาย

⁵⁷and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite on their heads: and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
