¹มีหลายคนได้เรียบเรียงเรื่องราวเหล่านั้น ซึ่งเป็นที่เชื่อได้อย่างแน่นอนในท่ามกลางเราทั้งหลาย

¹Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

²even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,

³it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;

⁴เพื่อท่านจะได้รู้แน่นอนอันเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวเหล่านั้น ซึ่งมีผู้แจ้งให้ท่านทราบแล้ว

⁴that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

⁵ในรัชกาลเฮโรด กษัตริย์ของยูเดีย มีปุโรหิตคนหนึ่งชื่อเศคาริยาห์ อยู่ในเวรอาบียาห์ ภรรยาของเศคาริยาห์ชื่อเอลีซาเบธ อยู่ในตระกูลอาโรน

⁵There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

⁶เขาทั้งสองเป็นคนชอบธรรมจำเพาะพระพักตร์พระเจ้า และดำเนินตามพระบัญญัติและกฎทั้งปวงขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าไม่มีที่ติเลย

⁶They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

⁷แต่เขาไม่มีบุตร เพราะว่านางเอลีซาเบธเป็นหมัน และเขาทั้งสองก็ชราแล้ว

⁷But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.

⁸ต่อมาขณะที่เศคาริยาห์ทำหน้าที่ปุโรหิตเข้าเฝ้าพระเจ้า เมื่อท่านอยู่เวรประจำการของท่าน

⁸Now it happened, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division,

⁹ท่านได้สลากตามธรรมเนียมของปุโรหิต ต้องเข้าไปในพระวิหารขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเพื่อเผาเครื่องหอมบูชา

⁹according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

¹⁰ส่วนบรรดาประชาชนก็อธิษฐานอยู่ภายนอกในเวลาเผาเครื่องหอมนั้น

¹⁰The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.

¹¹ทูตสวรรค์องค์หนึ่งขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้ามาปรากฏแก่เศคาริยาห์ ยืนอยู่ที่ข้างขวาแท่นเผาเครื่องหอมบูชา

¹¹An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹²เมื่อเศคาริยาห์เห็นก็ตกใจกลัว

¹²Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

¹³แต่ทูตสวรรค์องค์นั้นกล่าวแก่ท่านว่า "เศคาริยาห์เอ๋ย อย่ากลัวเลย ด้วยได้ทรงฟังคำอธิษฐานของท่านแล้ว นางเอลีซาเบธภรรยาของท่านจะมีบุตรเป็นผู้ชาย และท่านจะตั้งชื่อบุตรนั้นว่า ยอห์น

¹³But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

¹⁴ท่านจะมีความปรีดาและยินดี และคนเป็นอันมากจะเปรมปรีดิ์ที่บุตรนั้นบังเกิดมา

¹⁴You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

¹⁵เพราะว่าเขาจะเป็นใหญ่ในสายพระเนตรขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า เขาจะไม่ดื่มน้ำองุ่นหรือเหล้าเลย และเขาจะประกอบไปด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์ตั้งแต่ครรภ์มารดา

¹⁵For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

¹⁶เขาจะนำคนอิสราเอลหลายคนให้หันกลับมาหาองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า พระเจ้าของเขาทั้งหลาย

¹⁶He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.

¹⁷เขาจะนำหน้าพระองค์โดยแสดงอารมณ์และฤทธิ์เดชอย่างเอลียาห์ ให้พ่อกลับคืนดีกับลูกและคนที่ไม่เชื่อฟังให้กลับได้ปัญญาของคนชอบธรรม เพื่อจัดเตรียมชนชาติหนึ่งไว้ให้สมแก่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า"

¹⁷He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”

¹⁸เศคาริยาห์จึงทูลทูตสวรรค์ว่า "ข้าพเจ้าจะรู้แน่ได้อย่างไร เพราะข้าพเจ้าก็ชราและภรรยาก็อายุมากแล้ว"

¹⁸Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

¹⁹ฝ่ายทูตสวรรค์นั้นจึงตอบท่านว่า "เราคือกาเบรียลซึ่งยืนอยู่เฉพาะพระพักตร์พระเจ้า และทรงใช้ให้มาพูดและนำข่าวดีนี้มาแจ้งกับท่าน

¹⁹The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

²⁰ดูเถิด เพราะท่านมิได้เชื่อถ้อยคำของเรา ถึงเรื่องที่จะสำเร็จตามกำหนด ท่านก็จะเป็นใบ้ แล้วไม่สามารถพูดได้ จนถึงวันที่การณ์เหล่านี้จะบังเกิดขึ้น"

²⁰Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

²¹ฝ่ายคนทั้งหลายที่คอยเศคาริยาห์ ก็ประหลาดใจ เพราะท่านอยู่ในพระวิหารช้านาน

²¹The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

²²เมื่อท่านออกมาแล้วก็พูดกับเขาไม่ได้ คนทั้งหลายจึงหยั่งรู้ว่าท่านได้เห็นนิมิตในพระวิหาร เพราะท่านใช้ใบ้กับเขาและยังเป็นใบ้อยู่

²²When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

²³ต่อมาเมื่อหมดเวรของท่านแล้ว ท่านก็กลับไปบ้าน

²³It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

²⁴ภายหลังนางเอลีซาเบธภรรยาของท่านก็ตั้งครรภ์ แล้วไปซ่อนตัวอยู่ห้าเดือนพูดว่า

²⁴After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

²⁵"องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ทรงกระทำเช่นนี้แก่ข้าพเจ้า ในวันที่พระองค์ได้ทอดพระเนตรดูข้าพเจ้า เพื่อนำความอดสูของข้าพเจ้าที่มีอยู่ท่ามกลางคนทั้งปวงไปเสีย"

²⁵“Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”

²⁶เมื่อถึงเดือนที่หก พระเจ้าทรงใช้ทูตสวรรค์กาเบรียลนั้น ให้มายังเมืองหนึ่งในแคว้นกาลิลี ชื่อนาซาเร็ธ

²⁶Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁷มาถึงหญิงพรหมจารีคนหนึ่งที่ได้หมั้นกันไว้กับชายคนหนึ่งชื่อโยเซฟ เป็นคนในวงศ์วานดาวิด หญิงพรหมจารีนั้นชื่อมารีย์

²⁷to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

²⁸ทูตสวรรค์มาถึงหญิงพรหมจารีนั้นแล้วว่า "เธอผู้ซึ่งเป็นที่ทรงโปรดปรานมาก จงจำเริญเถิด องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงสถิตอยู่กับเธอ เธอได้รับพระพรท่ามกลางสตรีทั้งปวง"

²⁸Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

²⁹เมื่อมารีย์เห็นทูตสวรรค์องค์นั้น เธอก็ตกใจเพราะคำของทูตนั้น และรำพึงว่าคำกล่าวนั้นจะหมายว่าอะไร

²⁹But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.

³⁰แล้วทูตสวรรค์จึงกล่าวแก่เธอว่า "มารีย์เอ๋ย อย่ากลัวเลย เพราะเธอเป็นที่พระเจ้าทรงโปรดปรานแล้ว

³⁰The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

³¹ดูเถิด เธอจะตั้งครรภ์และคลอดบุตรชายคนหนึ่ง จงตั้งชื่อบุตรนั้นว่า เยซู

³¹Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’

³²บุตรนั้นจะเป็นใหญ่ และจะทรงเรียกว่าเป็นบุตรของพระเจ้าสูงสุด พระเจ้าซึ่งเป็นองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า จะทรงประทานพระที่นั่งของดาวิดบรรพบุรุษของท่านให้แก่ท่าน

³²He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,

³³และท่านจะครอบครองวงศ์วานของยาโคบสืบไปเป็นนิตย์ และอาณาจักรของท่านจะไม่รู้จักสิ้นสุดเลย"

³³and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”

³⁴ฝ่ายมารีย์ทูลทูตสวรรค์นั้นว่า "เหตุการณ์นั้นจะเป็นไปอย่างไรได้ เพราะข้าพเจ้ายังหาได้ร่วมกับชายใดไม่"

³⁴Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”

³⁵ทูตสวรรค์จึงตอบเธอว่า "พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์จะเสด็จลงมาบนเธอ และฤทธิ์เดชของผู้สูงสุดจะปกเธอ เหตุฉะนั้นองค์บริสุทธิ์ที่จะบังเกิดมานั้นจะได้เรียกว่า พระบุตรของพระเจ้า

³⁵The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

³⁶ดูเถิด ถึงนางเอลีซาเบธ ญาติของเธอชราแล้ว ก็ยังตั้งครรภ์มีบุตรเป็นชายด้วย บัดนี้ นางนั้นที่คนเขาถือว่าเป็นหญิงหมันก็มีครรภ์ได้หกเดือนแล้ว

³⁶Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

³⁷เพราะว่าไม่มีสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใดซึ่งพระเจ้าทรงกระทำไม่ได้"

³⁷For everything spoken by God is possible.”

³⁸ส่วนมารีย์จึงทูลว่า "ดูเถิด ข้าพเจ้าเป็นหญิงคนใช้ขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ขอให้บังเกิดแก่ข้าพเจ้าตามคำของท่านเถิด" แล้วทูตสวรรค์นั้นจึงจากเธอไป

³⁸Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her.

³⁹คราวนั้นมารีย์จึงรีบออกไปถึงเมืองหนึ่งในแถบภูเขาแห่งยูเดีย

³⁹Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,

⁴⁰แล้วเข้าไปในเรือนของเศคาริยาห์ทักทายปราศรัยนางเอลีซาเบธ

⁴⁰and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

⁴¹ต่อมาเมื่อนางเอลีซาเบธได้ยินคำปราศรัยของมารีย์ ทารกในครรภ์ของเขาก็ดิ้น และนางเอลีซาเบธก็เต็มไปด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์

⁴¹It happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

⁴²จึงร้องเสียงดังว่า "ท่านได้รับพรท่ามกลางสตรีทั้งปวง และผู้บังเกิดจากครรภ์ของท่านก็ได้รับพระพรด้วย

⁴²She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

⁴³เป็นไฉนข้าพเจ้าจึงได้ความโปรดปรานเช่นนี้ คือมารดาขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของข้าพเจ้าได้มาหาข้าพเจ้า

⁴³Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴⁴เพราะดูเถิด พอเสียงปราศรัยของท่านเข้าหูข้าพเจ้า ทารกในครรภ์ของข้าพเจ้าก็ดิ้นด้วยความยินดี

⁴⁴For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!

⁴⁵สตรีที่ได้เชื่อก็เป็นสุข เพราะว่าจะสำเร็จตามพระดำรัสจากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าที่มาถึงเขา"

⁴⁵Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

⁴⁶นางมารีย์จึงว่า "จิตใจของข้าพเจ้าก็ยกย่ององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า

⁴⁶Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.

⁴⁷และวิญญาณของข้าพเจ้าก็เกิดความยินดีในพระเจ้า พระผู้ช่วยให้รอดของข้าพเจ้า

⁴⁸เพราะพระองค์ทรงห่วงใยฐานะอันยากต่ำแห่งหญิงคนใช้ของพระองค์ เพราะดูเถิด ตั้งแต่นี้ไปคนทุกชั่วอายุจะเรียกข้าพเจ้าว่าผาสุก

⁴⁸for he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.

⁴⁹เพราะว่าผู้ทรงฤทธิ์ได้ทรงกระทำการใหญ่กับข้าพเจ้า พระนามของพระองค์ก็บริสุทธิ์

⁴⁹For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.

⁵⁰พระกรุณาของพระองค์มีแก่บรรดาผู้ยำเกรงพระองค์ ทุกชั่วอายุสืบๆไป

⁵¹พระองค์ทรงสำแดงฤทธิ์ด้วยพระกรของพระองค์ พระองค์ทรงกระทำให้คนที่มีใจเย่อหยิ่งแตกฉานซ่านเซ็นไป

⁵¹He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵²พระองค์ทรงถอดเจ้านายจากพระที่นั่ง และทรงยกผู้น้อยขึ้น

⁵²He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly.

⁵³พระองค์ทรงโปรดให้คนอดอยากอิ่มด้วยสิ่งดี และพระองค์ทรงกระทำให้คนมั่งมีไปมือเปล่า

⁵³He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.

⁵⁴พระองค์ทรงช่วยอิสราเอลผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ คือทรงจดจำพระกรุณาของพระองค์

⁵⁵ที่มีต่ออับราฮัมและต่อเชื้อสายของท่านเป็นนิตย์ ตามที่พระองค์ได้ตรัสไว้กับบรรพบุรุษของเรา"

⁵⁵As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever.”

⁵⁶มารีย์อาศัยอยู่กับนางเอลีซาเบธประมาณสามเดือน แล้วจึงกลับไปยังบ้านของตน

⁵⁶Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.

⁵⁷ครั้นเวลาซึ่งนางเอลีซาเบธจะคลอดบุตรครบถ้วนแล้ว นางก็คลอดบุตรเป็นชาย

⁵⁷Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁸เพื่อนบ้านและญาติพี่น้องของนางได้ยินว่า องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ทรงสำแดงพระมหากรุณาแก่นาง เขาทั้งหลายก็พากันเปรมปรีดิ์ด้วย

⁵⁸Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁹ต่อมาครั้นถึงวันที่แปดแล้ว เขาก็พากันมาให้ทารกนั้นเข้าสุหนัต และเขาจะให้ชื่อทารกนั้นว่า เศคาริยาห์ ตามชื่อบิดา

⁵⁹It happened on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father.

⁶⁰ฝ่ายมารดาจึงตอบว่า "ไม่ใช่ แต่ต้องให้ชื่อว่ายอห์น"

⁶⁰His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.”

⁶¹เขาพากันตอบนางว่า "ไม่มีผู้ใดในพวกญาติของท่านที่มีชื่ออย่างนั้น"

⁶¹They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

⁶²แล้วเขาจึงใช้ใบ้กับบิดา ถามว่าท่านอยากจะให้บุตรนั้นชื่ออะไร

⁶²They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.

⁶³บิดาจึงขอกระดานชนวนมาเขียนว่า "ชื่อของบุตรคือยอห์น" คนทั้งหลายก็ประหลาดใจนัก

⁶³He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled.

⁶⁴ในทันใดนั้นปากและลิ้นของท่านก็คืนดีอีก แล้วท่านกล่าวสรรเสริญพระเจ้า

⁶⁴His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.

⁶⁵บรรดาเพื่อนบ้านของท่านก็บังเกิดความกลัว และเหตุการณ์ทั้งปวงนั้นก็เลื่องลือไปทั่วแถบภูเขาแคว้นยูเดีย

⁶⁵Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.

⁶⁶บรรดาคนที่ได้ยินก็จดจำไว้ในใจและว่า "ทารกนั้นจะเป็นอย่างไรหนอ" และพระหัตถ์ขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าอยู่กับเขา

⁶⁶All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁷ฝ่ายเศคาริยาห์ผู้เป็นบิดาประกอบไปด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์แล้วได้พยากรณ์ว่า

⁶⁷His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁸"จงสรรเสริญองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า พระเจ้าของพวกอิสราเอล ด้วยว่าพระองค์ได้ทรงเยี่ยมเยียนและช่วยไถ่ชนชาติของพระองค์

⁶⁸“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and worked redemption for his people;

⁶⁹และได้ทรงชูเขาแห่งความรอดขึ้นมาเพื่อเราในวงศ์วานของดาวิดผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์

⁷⁰ตามที่พระองค์ได้ตรัสไว้ตั้งแต่เริ่มสร้างโลก โดยปากของพวกศาสดาพยากรณ์บริสุทธิ์ของพระองค์

⁷¹ว่าเราจะรอดพ้นจากพวกศัตรูของเราทั้งหลาย และพ้นจากมือของคนทั้งปวงที่ชังเรา

⁷²จะทรงสำแดงพระกรุณาซึ่งทรงสัญญาแก่บรรพบุรุษของเรา และทรงระลึกถึงพันธสัญญาบริสุทธิ์ของพระองค์

⁷²to show mercy towards our fathers, to remember his holy covenant,

⁷³คือคำปฏิญาณซึ่งพระองค์ได้ทรงกระทำไว้กับอับราฮัมบรรพบุรุษของเรา

⁷⁴ว่าเมื่อเราทั้งหลายพ้นจากมือศัตรูของเราแล้ว จะทรงโปรดให้เราปรนนิบัติพระองค์โดยปราศจากความกลัว

⁷⁴to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,

⁷⁵ด้วยความบริสุทธิ์และด้วยความชอบธรรมจำเพาะพระพักตร์พระองค์ตลอดชีวิตของเรา

⁷⁶ท่านทารกเอ๋ย เขาจะเรียกท่านว่าเป็นศาสดาพยากรณ์ของผู้สูงสุด เพราะว่าท่านจะนำหน้าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเพื่อจะจัดเตรียมมรรคาของพระองค์ไว้

⁷⁶And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

⁷⁷เพื่อจะให้ชนชาติของพระองค์มีความรู้ถึงความรอด โดยการทรงยกบาปของเขา

⁷⁸โดยพระทัยเมตตากรุณาแห่งพระเจ้าของเรา แสงอรุณจากเบื้องสูงจึงมาเยี่ยมเยียนเรา

⁷⁸because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn from on high will visit us,

⁷⁹เพื่อจะส่องสว่างแก่คนทั้งหลายผู้อยู่ในที่มืด และในเงาแห่งความตาย เพื่อจะนำเท้าของเราไปในทางสันติสุข"

⁷⁹to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

⁸⁰ฝ่ายทารกนั้นก็ได้เจริญวัยขึ้น และจิตวิญญาณก็มีกำลังทวีขึ้น และไปอาศัยในถิ่นทุรกันดารจนถึงวันที่ท่านจะได้มาปรากฏแก่ชนชาติอิสราเอล

⁸⁰The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
