¹คราวนั้นยอห์นผู้ให้รับบัพติศมา มาประกาศในถิ่นทุรกันดารแคว้นยูเดีย

¹In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

²กล่าวว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายจงกลับใจเสียใหม่ เพราะว่าอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์มาใกล้แล้ว"

²“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

³ยอห์นผู้นี้แหละซึ่งตรัสถึงโดยอิสยาห์ศาสดาพยากรณ์ว่า `เสียงผู้ร้องในถิ่นทุรกันดารว่า ท่านจงเตรียมมรรคาขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า จงกระทำหนทางของพระองค์ให้ตรงไป'

³For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.” Isaiah 40:3

⁴เสื้อผ้าของยอห์นผู้นี้ทำด้วยขนอูฐ และท่านใช้หนังสัตว์คาดเอว อาหารของท่านคือตั๊กแตนและน้ำผึ้งป่า

⁴Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

⁵ขณะนั้นชาวกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม และคนทั่วแคว้นยูเดีย และคนทั่วลุ่มแม่น้ำจอร์แดน ก็ออกไปหายอห์น

⁵Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.

⁶และได้รับบัพติศมาจากยอห์นในแม่น้ำจอร์แดน ด้วยการสารภาพความผิดบาปของตน

⁶They were baptized or, immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ครั้นยอห์นเห็นพวกฟาริสีและพวกสะดูสีพากันมาเป็นอันมากเพื่อจะรับบัพติศมา ท่านจึงกล่าวแก่เขาว่า "โอ เจ้าชาติงูร้าย ใครได้เตือนเจ้าให้หนีจากพระอาชญาซึ่งจะมาถึงนั้น

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, or, immersion he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁸เหตุฉะนั้นจงพิสูจน์การกลับใจของเจ้าด้วยผลที่เกิดขึ้น

⁸Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!

⁹อย่านึกเหมาเอาในใจว่า เรามีอับราฮัมเป็นบิดา เพราะเราบอกเจ้าทั้งหลายว่า พระเจ้าทรงฤทธิ์สามารถจะให้บุตรเกิดขึ้นแก่อับราฮัมจากก้อนหินเหล่านี้ได้

⁹Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

¹⁰บัดนี้ขวานวางไว้ที่โคนต้นไม้แล้ว ดังนั้นทุกต้นที่ไม่เกิดผลดีจะต้องตัดแล้วโยนทิ้งในกองไฟ

¹⁰“Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

¹¹I indeed baptize or, immerse you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. TR and NU add “and with fire”

¹²พระหัตถ์ของพระองค์ถือพลั่วพร้อมแล้ว และจะทรงชำระลานข้าวของพระองค์ให้ทั่ว พระองค์จะทรงเก็บข้าวของพระองค์ไว้ในยุ้งฉาง แต่พระองค์จะทรงเผาแกลบด้วยไฟที่ไม่รู้ดับ"

¹²His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”

¹³แล้วพระเยซูเสด็จจากแคว้นกาลิลีมาหายอห์นที่แม่น้ำจอร์แดน เพื่อจะรับบัพติศมาจากท่าน

¹³Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

¹⁴แต่ยอห์นทูลห้ามพระองค์ว่า "ข้าพระองค์ต้องการจะรับบัพติศมาจากพระองค์ ควรหรือที่พระองค์จะเสด็จมาหาข้าพระองค์"

¹⁴But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”

¹⁵และพระเยซูตรัสตอบยอห์นว่า "บัดนี้จงยอมเถิด เพราะสมควรที่เราทั้งหลายจะกระทำตามสิ่งชอบธรรมทุกประการ" แล้วท่านก็ยอมทำตามพระองค์

¹⁵But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

¹⁶และพระเยซูเมื่อพระองค์ทรงรับบัพติศมาแล้ว ในทันใดนั้นก็เสด็จขึ้นจากน้ำ และดูเถิด ท้องฟ้าก็แหวกออก และพระองค์ได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพระวิญญาณของพระเจ้าเสด็จลงมาดุจนกเขาและสถิตอยู่บนพระองค์

¹⁶Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.

¹⁷และดูเถิด มีพระสุรเสียงตรัสจากฟ้าสวรรค์ว่า "ท่านผู้นี้เป็นบุตรที่รักของเรา เราชอบใจท่านมาก"

¹⁷Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
