¹ต่อมาเมื่อสันบาลลัทได้ยินว่าเรากำลังก่อสร้างกำแพง เขาโกรธและเดือดดาลมาก และเขาเยาะเย้ยพวกยิว

¹But it happened that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

²และเขาพูดต่อหน้าพี่น้องของเขาและต่อหน้ากองทัพของสะมาเรียว่า "พวกยิวที่อ่อนแอเหล่านี้ทำอะไรกัน เขาจะซ่อมกันหรือ เขาจะทำสัตวบูชาหรือ เขาจะทำให้เสร็จในวันเดียวหรือ เขาจะเอาหินที่ถูกเผาจากกองขยะมาใช้อีกหรือ"

²He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

³โทบีอาห์คนอัมโมนอยู่ข้างๆท่าน และเขาพูดว่า "เออ สิ่งที่เขากำลังสร้างอยู่นั้น ถ้าสุนัขจิ้งจอกตัวหนึ่งวิ่งขึ้นไป มันจะพังกำแพงหินของเขาลงมา"

³Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

⁴"ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลาย ขอทรงสดับ เพราะข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายเป็นที่ดูถูกดูหมิ่น ขอทรงหันการเยาะเย้ยของเขาให้ตกบนศีรษะของเขาเอง และขอทรงมอบเขาไว้ให้ถูกปล้นบนแผ่นดินที่เขาจะไปเป็นเชลยนั้น

⁴“Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a spoil in a land of captivity;

⁵ขออย่าทรงปกปิดความชั่วช้าของเขาไว้ และขออย่าลบล้างบาปของเขาทั้งหลายต่อเบื้องพระพักตร์พระองค์ เพราะเขาทั้งหลายได้ยั่วเย้าให้ทรงกริ้วต่อหน้าบรรดาผู้ก่อสร้าง"

⁵don’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

⁶เราจึงสร้างกำแพงขึ้น และกำแพงทั้งสิ้นก็ต่อกันสูงครึ่งหนึ่งแล้ว เพราะประชาชนมีน้ำใจที่จะทำงาน

⁶So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

⁷แต่ต่อมาเมื่อสันบาลลัทและโทบีอาห์ กับชาวอาระเบีย และคนอัมโมน และชาวอัศโดดได้ยินว่า การซ่อมแซมกำแพงเยรูซาเล็มนั้นกำลังคืบหน้าต่อไป และกำลังปิดช่องโหว่ต่างๆ เขาทั้งหลายก็โกรธมาก

⁷But it happened that when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry;

⁸และเขาก็ปองร้ายกันจะมาสู้รบกับเยรูซาเล็ม และก่อการโกลาหลขึ้นในนั้น

⁸and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

⁹แต่เราทั้งหลายได้อ้อนวอนต่อพระเจ้าของเรา และวางยามป้องกันเขาทั้งหลายทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน

⁹But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

¹⁰แต่ยูดาห์กล่าวว่า "เรี่ยวแรงของคนที่ขนของก็กำลังทรุดลง และมีสิ่งสลักหักพังมาก เราไม่สามารถสร้างกำแพงได้"

¹⁰Judah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.”

¹¹และศัตรูของเรากล่าวว่า "เขาจะไม่รู้ไม่เห็นจนกว่าเราจะเข้ามาท่ามกลางเขาและฆ่าเขา กับยับยั้งงานของเขา"

¹¹Our adversaries said, “They shall not know, neither see, until we come into their midst, and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

¹²ต่อมาเมื่อพวกยิวที่อยู่ใกล้เขาทั้งหลายมาก็ได้บอกเราตั้งสิบครั้งว่า "เขาจะลุกขึ้นมาต่อสู้เราจากที่อยู่ของเขาทุกแห่ง"

¹²It happened that when the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

¹³ข้าพเจ้าจึงตั้งประชาชนไว้ในส่วนที่ต่ำที่สุดข้างหลังกำแพง และในที่สูง ตามครอบครัวของเขา โดยมีดาบ หอก และคันธนู

¹³Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

¹⁴ข้าพเจ้ามองดู แล้วลุกขึ้นพูดกับขุนนางและเจ้าหน้าที่ทั้งหลาย กับคนนอกนั้นว่า "อย่ากลัวเขาเลย จงระลึกถึงองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้ใหญ่ยิ่งและน่าเกรงกลัว และต่อสู้เพื่อพี่น้องของท่าน บุตรชายบุตรสาวของท่าน ภรรยาและเรือนของท่าน"

¹⁴I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

¹⁵อยู่มาเมื่อศัตรูของเราได้ยินว่าเราได้ยินเรื่องแล้ว และพระเจ้าได้ทรงทำลายแผนงานของเขา เราต่างก็กลับมายังกำแพงที่งานของตนทุกคน

¹⁵It happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.

¹⁶ตั้งแต่วันนั้นมา ผู้รับใช้ของข้าพเจ้าครึ่งหนึ่งทำการก่อสร้าง อีกครึ่งหนึ่งถือหอก โล่ คันธนู และเสื้อเกราะ บรรดาประมุขทั้งหลายหนุนหลังบรรดาวงศ์วานยูดาห์

¹⁶It happened from that time forth, that half of my servants worked in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

¹⁷ผู้ที่ก่อสร้างกำแพง และบรรดาผู้ที่ขนของกับผู้ที่ยกของขึ้น ทุกคนมือหนึ่งทำงาน อีกมือหนึ่งถืออาวุธไว้

¹⁷They all built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands worked in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

¹⁸ผู้ก่อสร้างทุกคนมีดาบคาดอยู่ที่สีข้างขณะที่เขาสร้าง ชายที่เป่าแตรอยู่ข้างข้าพเจ้า

¹⁸and the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

¹⁹ข้าพเจ้าพูดกับขุนนางและเจ้าหน้าที่ทั้งปวงกับคนนอกนั้นว่า "การงานก็ใหญ่โตและกระจายกันไปมาก เพราะเราแยกกันอยู่บนกำแพงห่างจากกัน

¹⁹I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.

²⁰เมื่อท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินเสียงแตรอยู่ตรงไหน จงวิ่งกรูกันไปที่พวกเรา พระเจ้าของเราทั้งหลายจะทรงต่อสู้เพื่อพวกเรา"

²⁰Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”

²¹เราจึงทำงานกัน พวกเราครึ่งหนึ่งถือหอกตั้งแต่เช้ามืดจนดาวขึ้น

²¹So we worked in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

²²ครั้งนั้น ข้าพเจ้าพูดกับประชาชนอีกว่า "ขอให้ผู้ชายทุกคนกับคนใช้ของเขาด้วยค้างคืนเสียภายในเยรูซาเล็ม เพื่อเขาจะเป็นยามให้เราในกลางคืนและทำงานกลางวัน"

²²Likewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

²³ข้าพเจ้า พี่น้องของข้าพเจ้า หรือคนใช้ของข้าพเจ้า หรือคนยามผู้ติดตามข้าพเจ้าก็ดี ไม่มีใครถอดเครื่องแต่งกายออก เว้นแต่เหล่าคนที่ถอดออกเพื่อซัก

²³So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.
