1อยู่มาเมื่อมีรายงานให้สันบาลลัท โทบีอาห์และเกเชมชาวอาระเบียกับศัตรูอื่นๆของเราทั้งหลายได้ยินว่า ข้าพเจ้าได้ก่อกำแพง และไม่มีช่องโหว่เหลืออยู่ (แม้ว่าจนวันนั้นข้าพเจ้ายังไม่ได้ตั้งบานประตูที่ประตูเมือง)
1Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)
2สันบาลลัทกับเกเชมใช้ให้มาหาข้าพเจ้าว่า "ขอเชิญมาพบกันในชนบทแห่งหนึ่งในที่ราบโอโน" แต่เขาทั้งหลายเจตนาจะทำอันตรายข้าพเจ้า
2that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
3ข้าพเจ้าก็ใช้ผู้สื่อสารไปหาพวกเขาว่า "ข้าพเจ้ากำลังทำงานใหญ่ ลงมาไม่ได้ ทำไมจะให้งานหยุดเสียในขณะที่ข้าพเจ้าทิ้งงานลงมาหาท่าน"
3I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?”
4แล้วเขาใช้ให้มาหาข้าพเจ้าอย่างนี้สี่ครั้ง ข้าพเจ้าก็ตอบเขาไปทำนองเดียวกัน
4They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them the same way.
5สันบาลลัทได้ส่งคนใช้ของท่านมาหาข้าพเจ้าในทำนองเดียวกันเป็นครั้งที่ห้า ถือจดหมายเปิดมา
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6ในนั้นมีเขียนไว้ว่า "เขากล่าวกันในท่ามกลางประชาชาติทั้งหลาย และเกเชมก็กล่าวด้วยว่า ท่านและพวกยิวเจตนาจะกบฏ เหตุนั้นแหละท่านจึงสร้างกำแพง และท่านปรารถนาจะเป็นกษัตริย์ของพวกเขา ตามถ้อยคำนี้
6in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
7และท่านได้แต่งตั้งผู้พยากรณ์ไว้ให้ป่าวร้องเกี่ยวกับตัวท่านในเยรูซาเล็มว่า `มีกษัตริย์ในยูดาห์' บัดนี้จะได้รายงานให้กษัตริย์ทรงทราบตามถ้อยคำเหล่านี้ เหตุฉะนั้นขอเชิญท่านมาหารือด้วยกัน"
7You have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.”
8แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็ใช้ให้ไปหาเขากล่าวว่า "สิ่งที่ท่านกล่าวมานั้นเราไม่ได้กระทำกันเลย ท่านเสกสรรขึ้นตามใจของท่านเอง"
8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
9เพราะเขาทั้งหลายต้องการที่จะให้เราตกใจคิดว่า "มือของเขาจะผละจากงานไปเสีย และงานจะได้ไม่สำเร็จ" แต่ข้าแต่พระเจ้า บัดนี้ขอพระองค์ทรงเสริมกำลังมือของข้าพระองค์
9For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done. But now, strengthen my hands.”
10และข้าพเจ้าเข้าไปในเรือนของเชไมอาห์ บุตรชายเดไลยาห์ ผู้เป็นบุตรชายเมเหทาเบล ผู้ที่เก็บตัวอยู่ เขาพูดว่า "ให้เราไปพบกันในพระนิเวศของพระเจ้าในพระวิหาร ให้เราปิดประตูพระวิหารเสีย เพราะเขาทั้งหลายจะมาฆ่าท่าน เวลากลางคืนเขาจะมาฆ่าท่านเสีย"
10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”
11แต่ข้าพเจ้าว่า "คนอย่างข้าพเจ้าจะหนีหรือ และคนอย่างข้าพเจ้าจะเข้าไปอยู่ในพระวิหารเพื่อช่วยชีวิตให้รอดได้หรือ ข้าพเจ้าจะไม่เข้าไป"
11I said, “Should such a man as I flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
12และดูเถิด ข้าพเจ้าเข้าใจและเห็นว่า พระเจ้ามิได้ทรงใช้เขา แต่เขาได้พยากรณ์ใส่ร้ายข้าพเจ้า เพราะโทบีอาห์และสันบาลลัทได้จ้างเขา
12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13เขาทั้งสองได้จ้างเขามาด้วยหวังจะให้ข้าพเจ้ากลัวแล้วกระทำเช่นนั้น จะได้บาปและเขาจะมีเรื่องป้ายร้ายข้าพเจ้า เพื่อจะเยาะเย้ยข้าพเจ้า
13He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14"ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ ขอพระองค์ทรงระลึกถึงโทบีอาห์และสันบาลลัทตามสิ่งเหล่านี้ที่เขาได้กระทำ ทั้งโนอัดยาห์หญิงผู้พยากรณ์และผู้พยากรณ์อื่นๆซึ่งต้องการให้ข้าพระองค์กลัว"
14“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”
15กำแพงจึงสำเร็จในวันที่ยี่สิบห้าเดือนเอลูล ในห้าสิบสองวัน
15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
16และอยู่มาเมื่อศัตรูทั้งสิ้นของเราทั้งหลายได้ยิน และเมื่อประชาชาติทั้งปวงรอบเราก็เห็นแล้ว เขาก็น้อยเนื้อต่ำใจ เพราะเขาทั้งหลายหยั่งรู้ว่างานนี้ที่ได้สำเร็จไปก็ด้วยพระเจ้าของเราทรงช่วยเหลือ
16It happened, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations that were about us were afraid, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was worked of our God.
17ยิ่งกว่านั้นอีก ในครั้งนั้นขุนนางทั้งหลายของยูดาห์ก็ได้ส่งจดหมายหลายฉบับไปถึงโทบีอาห์ และจดหมายของโทบีอาห์ก็มาถึงเขา
17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.
18เพราะมีหลายคนในยูดาห์ได้ผูกพันกับเขาไว้ด้วยคำปฏิญาณ เพราะเขาเป็นบุตรเขยของเชคานิยาห์ ผู้เป็นบุตรชายอาราห์ และโยฮานันบุตรชายของเขาก็ได้รับบุตรสาวของเมชุลลาม ผู้เป็นบุตรชายเบเรคิยาห์เป็นภรรยาของตน
18For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.
19เขาทั้งหลายพูดถึงความดีของโทบีอาห์ต่อหน้าข้าพเจ้าด้วย และรายงานคำของข้าพเจ้าไปให้เขา และโทบีอาห์ก็ได้ส่งจดหมายมาให้ข้าพเจ้า เพื่อให้กลัว
19Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
