¹ดูก่อนชาติทั้งหลาย จงฟังข้อความนี้ ชาวพิภพทั้งปวงเอ๋ย จงเงี่ยหูฟัง

¹Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,

²ทั้งผู้น้อยผู้ใหญ่ ทั้งเศรษฐีและคนจนด้วยกัน

²both low and high, rich and poor together.

³ปากของข้าพเจ้าจะเผยปัญญา การรำพึงของจิตใจข้าพเจ้าคือความเข้าใจ

³My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart shall utter understanding.

⁴ข้าพเจ้าจะเอียงหูฟังคำอุปมา ข้าพเจ้าจะแก้ปริศนาของข้าพเจ้าให้เข้ากับเสียงพิณเขาคู่

⁴I will incline my ear to a proverb. I will open my riddle on the harp.

⁵ทำไมข้าพเจ้าจึงกลัวในคราวทุกข์ยากลำบาก เมื่อความชั่วช้าแห่งผู้ข่มเหงล้อมตัวข้าพเจ้า

⁵Why should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?

⁶คนผู้วางใจในทรัพย์ศฤงคารของตัว และอวดอ้างความมั่งคั่งอันอุดมของตน

⁶Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches—

⁷แน่ทีเดียวไม่มีคนใดไถ่พี่น้องของตนได้ หรือถวายค่าชีวิตของเขาแด่พระเจ้า

⁷none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.

⁸(เพราะค่าไถ่ชีวิตของเขานั้นแพงและไม่เคยพอเลย)

⁸For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough,

⁹ที่เขาจะมีชีวิตเรื่อยไปเป็นนิตย์และไม่ต้องเห็นความเปื่อยเน่า

⁹That he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.

¹⁰เออ เขาเห็นว่า ถึงปราชญ์ก็ยังตาย คนโง่และคนโฉดก็ต้องพินาศเหมือนกัน และละทรัพย์ศฤงคารของตนไว้ให้คนอื่น

¹⁰For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.
