¹Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

¹ای برادران، نمی خواهم از آنچه برای اجداد ما واقع شد بی خبر باشید. درست است که همۀ آن ها در زیر سایۀ ابر بودند و همه از بحر عبور کردند

²and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

²و همه به عنوان پیروان موسی در ابر و بحر تعمید گرفتند

³and all ate the same spiritual food;

³و همه از یک نان روحانی می خوردند

⁴and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

⁴و از یک آب روحانی می نوشیدند؛ زیرا از صخره ای روحانی که ایشان را دنبال می کرد، می نوشیدند و آن صخره مسیح بود.

⁵However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁵ولی با وجود این، خدا از اکثر آنها خوشنود نبود و به این سبب جسدهای آن ها در سرتاسر بیابان پراگنده شد.

⁶Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

⁶همۀ این چیزها برای ایشان واقع شد تا برای ما عبرتی باشد، تا ما مانند آن ها آرزوی چیزهای بد نکنیم.

⁷Neither be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Exodus 32:6

⁷مثلاً مانند بعضی از آن ها بت پرست نباشید، چنانکه نوشته شده است: «قوم اسرائیل نشستند تا بخورند و بنوشند و برخاستند تا به لهو و لعب بپردازند.»

⁸Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.

⁸مرتکب گناهان جنسی نشویم چنانکه بعضی از آن ها مرتکب شدند و در عرض یک روز بیست و سه هزار نفر از آنها مردند.

⁹Neither let us test the Lord, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

⁹خداوند را امتحان نکنیم! به طوری که بعضی از ایشان امتحان کردند و به وسیلۀ مارها هلاک گردیدند.

¹⁰Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.

¹⁰برضد خداوند شکایت نکنیم، چنان که بعضی از آن ها کردند و به دست فرشتۀ مرگ نابود شدند.

¹¹Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

¹¹همۀ این واقعات به عنوان نمونه ای بر سر آنها آمد و برای تربیت ما به عنوان عبرت نوشته شد. زیرا ما در زمان های آخر زندگی می کنیم.

¹²Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.

¹²بنابراین هرکس که گمان می کند استوار است، متوجه باشد که سقوط نکند.

¹³No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

¹³وسوسه هایی که شما با آن روبرو می شوید، وسوسه هایی است که برای تمام مردم پیش می آید، اما خدا به وعده های خود وفا می کند و نمی گذارد شما بیش از حد توانایی خود وسوسه شوید. همراه با هر وسوسه ای خداوند راهی هم برای فرار از آن فراهم می کند تا بتوانید در مقابل آن پایداری کنید.

¹⁴Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

¹⁴پس ای برادران، در مقابل بت پرستی ایستادگی کنید.

¹⁵I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say.

¹⁵روی سخن من با شما، یعنی با روشنفکران است. دربارۀ آنچه می گویم خود تان قضاوت کنید.

¹⁶The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ?

¹⁶آیا نوشیدن پیالۀ پُر از برکت که خدا را برای آن سپاس می گوئیم، شرکت در خون مسیح نیست؟ و آیا وقتی نان را پاره کرده می خوریم، آیا شرکت در بدن مسیح نیست؟

¹⁷Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

¹⁷همان طوری که یک نان وجود دارد، ما نیز اگرچه بسیاریم یک بدن هستیم زیرا همۀ ما در خوردن یک نان شریک هستیم.

¹⁸Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

¹⁸دربارۀ آنچه قوم اسرائیل کرد فکر کنید، آیا خورندگان قربانی ها در خدمت قربانگاه شریک نیستند؟

¹⁹What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

¹⁹پس مقصود من چیست؟ آیا اینکه خوراکی که به بُت تقدیم می شود، مافوق خوراکی های معمولی است و یا خود بُت چیزی غیر از یک بُت است؟

²⁰But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons.

²⁰نخیر، بلکه مقصود این است که بت پرستان آنچه را قربانی می کنند به شیاطین تقدیم می نمایند، نه به خدا و من نمی خواهم شما با شیاطین شریک باشید.

²¹You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.

²¹شما نمی توانید هم از پیالۀ خداوند و هم از پیالۀ شیاطین بنوشید و شما نمی توانید هم بر سر دسترخوان خداوند و هم دسترخوان شیاطین بنشینید.

²²Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

²²آیا می خواهیم خشم خداوند را برانگیزانیم؟ آیا ما از او قویتر هستیم؟

²³“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.

²³می گوئید: «در انجام هر کاری آزاد هستیم.» درست است، اما هر کاری برای ما صلاح نیست. بلی، همان طور که می گوئید در انجام هر کاری آزاد هستیم، اما هرکاری مفید نیست.

²⁴Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good.

²⁴هیچ کس در فکر نفع خود نباشد، بلکه در فکر نفع دیگران باشد.

²⁵Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience,

²⁵برای این که وجدان شما آسوده باشد، گوشتی را که در بازار فروخته می شود، بدون چون و چرا بخورید.

²⁶for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.” Psalm 24:1

²⁶زیرا «زمین و هر آنچه در آن است از آنِ خداوند است.»

²⁷But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience.

²⁷و اگر شخصی بی ایمان شما را به خانۀ خود دعوت کند و می خواهید بروید، هر غذایی که پیش شما گذاشت بخورید و برای راحتی وجدان تان لازم نیست دربارۀ آن چیزی بپرسید.

²⁸But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”

²⁸اما اگر او به شما بگوید: «این گوشت، گوشت قربانی است،» به خاطر آن کسی که شما را آگاه ساخت و به خاطر وجدان، آن غذا را نخورید.

²⁹Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience?

²⁹مقصود من وجدان شما نیست، بلکه وجدان آن شخص. ولی شما خواهید گفت: «چرا طرز قضاوت دیگران آزادی عمل مرا محدود سازد؟

³⁰If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks?

³⁰اگر من خوراک خود را با شکرگزاری می خورم، دیگر چرا باید برای آنچه شکرگزاری کرده ام مورد انتقاد قرار بگیرم؟»

³¹Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

³¹هرچه می کنید، خواه خوردن، خواه نوشیدن و یا هر کار دیگری که می کنید، همه را برای جلال خدا انجام دهید.

³²Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God;

³²یهودیان یا یونانیان یا کلیسای خدا را نرنجانید.همان کاری را بکنید که من می کنم: من کوشش می کنم تمام مردم را در هر امری خشنود سازم و در فکر خود نیستم، بلکه در فکر نفع بسیاری هستم تا ایشان نجات یابند.

³³even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

³³همان کاری را بکنید که من می کنم: من کوشش می کنم تمام مردم را در هر امری خشنود سازم و در فکر خود نیستم، بلکه در فکر نفع بسیاری هستم تا ایشان نجات یابند.
