¹Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

¹مرد مقتدر و ثروتمندی در قبیلۀ بنیامین زندگی می کرد. نام او قَیس، نام پدرش اَبیئیل، نام پدر کلانش صرور، نام نیکه اش بَکُورَت و نام نیکه کلان او افیح بود.

²He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

²قَیس پسر جوان و خوش چهره ای بنام شائول داشت که در بین تمام اسرائیل مثل او جوان خوش اندامی پیدا نمی شد و در بلندی قد نظیر او کسی نبود.

³The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.”

³روزی خرهای قَیس، پدر شائول گم شدند. قَیس به پسر خود، شائول گفت: «برخیز و یکی از خادمان را با خود گرفته برای یافتن خرها برو.»

⁴He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them.

⁴آن ها از کوهستانهای افرایم گذشته تا سرزمین شَلیشه رفتند، اما خرها را نیافتند. از آنجا به شَعلیم سفر کردند، ولی اثری از خرها نبود. بعد سراسر سرزمین بنیامین را جستجو نمودند، باز هم خرها را نیافتند.

⁵When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us.”

⁵وقتی به سرزمین صوف رسیدند، شائول به خادم همراه خود گفت: «بیا که برگردیم. ممکن است حالا پدرم خرها را فراموش کرده و بخاطر ما پریشان باشد.»

⁶He said to him, “See now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes surely to pass. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.”

⁶اما خادمش در جواب او گفت: «یک چیزی بیادم آمد. در این شهر یک مرد خدا زندگی می کند و همه مردم به او احترام دارند. او هر چیزی که بگوید، حقیقت پیدا می کند. بیا که پیش او برویم، شاید بتواند ما را در سفر راهنمائی کند.»

⁷Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

⁷شائول جواب داد: «ولی ما چیزی نداریم که برایش ببریم. نانی که در توبره داشتیم تمام شده است و تحفۀ دیگری هم موجود نیست که برای آن مرد خدا بدهیم. پس چه ببریم؟»

⁸The servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

⁸خادم گفت: «من شش نخود نقره دارم و آن را به مرد خدا می دهیم تا راه را برای ما نشان بدهد.»

⁹(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a Seer.)

⁹(در آن زمان وقتی کسی حاجتی از خدا می داشت، می گفت: «بیا که پیش یک رایی برویم.» چون به کسانی که امروز نبی می گویند در آن دوران آن ها را رایی می گفتند.)

¹⁰Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

¹⁰شائول قبول کرد و گفت: «بسیار خوب، بیا که برویم.» پس آن ها به شهر پیش آن مرد خدا رفتند.

¹¹As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

¹¹آن دو در راهِ تپه ای که به طرف شهر می رفت با چند دختر جوان برخوردند که برای کشیدن آب می رفتند. از آن دخترها پرسیدند: «آیا در این شهر نبی خداوند است؟»

¹²They answered them, and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

¹²دخترها جواب دادند: «بلی، از همین راه مستقیم بروید، چون او همین حالا به شهر رسید، زیرا مردم در بالای تپه مصروف اجرای مراسم قربانی هستند.

¹³As soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you shall find him.”

¹³پس عجله کنید، چون ممکن است وقتی شما به شهر داخل شوید او برای صرف غذا بسر تپه برود. و تا او به آنجا نرسد، مردم به غذا دست نمی زنند، زیرا او اول دعای قربانی را می خواند و بعد از آن مهمانها غذا می خورند. حالا بروید، بزودی او را می بینید.»

¹⁴They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.

¹⁴پس آن ها به شهر رفتند و دیدند که سموئیل در راه خود بسوی تپه، بطرف آن ها می آید.

¹⁵Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

¹⁵یک روز پیش از آمدن شائول، خداوند به سموئیل فرمود:

¹⁶“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry has come to me.”

¹⁶«فردا در همین ساعت مردی را از سرزمین بنیامین پیش تو می فرستم و تو او را مسح کرده بعنوان فرمانروای قوم برگزیدۀ من، اسرائیل انتخاب می کنی تا قوم برگزیدۀ مرا از دست فلسطینی ها نجات بدهد. من بر آن ها رحم کرده ام، زیرا زاری و نالۀ شان بگوش من رسیده است.»

¹⁷When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people.”

¹⁷وقتی سموئیل شائول را دید، خداوند به سموئیل فرمود: «این شخص همان کسی است که من در باره اش بتو گفتم! او کسی است که باید بر قوم برگزیدۀ من حکومت کند.»

¹⁸Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”

¹⁸لحظه ای بعد شائول در پیش دروازۀ شهر با سموئیل برخورد و گفت: «لطفاً خانۀ نبی خداوند را به ما نشان بده.»

¹⁹Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart.

¹⁹سموئیل جواب داد: «من خودم همان نبی هستم؛ حالا پیشتر از من بسر تپه برو، زیرا امروز با من غذا می خوری. فردا صبح هرچه که می خواهی بدانی، برایت می گویم و بعد می توانی به هر جائی می خواهی، بروی.

²⁰As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father’s house?”

²⁰اما در بارۀ خرها که سه روز پیش گم شده بودند، غم نخور، چرا که آن ها یافت شده اند، ولی چیزی که مردم اسرائیل بیشتر می خواهند تو و خانوادۀ پدرت می باشید.»

²¹Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?”

²¹شائول جواب داد: «من از قبیلۀ بنیامین هستم که کوچکترین قبیله ها است و خانوادۀ من هم از نگاه اهمیت و شهرت کمترین خانواده های قبیلۀ بنیامین می باشد. چرا این سخنان را با من می زنی؟»

²²Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

²²آنگاه سموئیل شائول و خادمش را در سالون بزرگی که در آن در حدود سی نفر مهمان حضور داشتند، برده در صدر مجلس جا داد.

²³Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’”

²³بعد سموئیل به آشپز گفت: «آن تکۀ گوشت را که به تو دادم و گفتم که آنرا پیش خود نگهدار، بیاور.»

²⁴The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

²⁴آشپز گوشت را آورد و پیش شائول گذاشت. سموئیل گفت: «این را مخصوصاً برای تو نگهداشته بودم تا در وقت معینش آن را بخوری. حالا بفرما، نوش جان کن!» به این ترتیب، شائول در آن روز با سموئیل غذا خورد.

²⁵When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop.

²⁵وقتی آن ها از تپه پائین آمدند و به شهر رفتند، سموئیل شائول را بر بام خانۀ خود برده و با او به گفتگو پرداخت.

²⁶They arose early: and it happened about the spring of the day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

²⁶صبح وقت روز دیگر سموئیل شائول را که در پشت بام بود صدا کرد و گفت: «برخیز، وقت آن است که باید بروی.» پس شائول برخاست با سموئیل بیرون رفت.وقتی آن ها به خارج شهر نزدیک شدند، سموئیل به شائول گفت: «به خادمت بگو که پیشتر از ما برود و تو کمی معطل کن، زیرا می خواهم پیغامی را که از جانب خداوند دارم برایت برسانم.»

²⁷As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant pass on before us” (and he passed on), “but stand still first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God.”

²⁷وقتی آن ها به خارج شهر نزدیک شدند، سموئیل به شائول گفت: «به خادمت بگو که پیشتر از ما برود و تو کمی معطل کن، زیرا می خواهم پیغامی را که از جانب خداوند دارم برایت برسانم.»
