¹Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

¹رَحُبعام به شکیم رفت، زیرا تمام قوم اسرائیل برای مراسم تاجپوشی او جمع شده بودند.

²It happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

²در عین حال یَرُبعام، پسر نباط که از دست سلیمان به مصر فرار کرده بود، هنوز هم در آنجا بسر می برد. چون از جریان خبر شد، از مصر برگشت.

³They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

³پس مردم او را فراخوانده یکجا پیش رَحُبعام رفتند و به او گفتند:

⁴“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”

⁴«پدرت یوغ سنگینی را بر دوش ما گذاشته بود، پس اگر می خواهی ما خدمتگار تو باشیم، تو باید کار سخت و یوغ سنگین پدرت را از سر ما آسان و سبک کنی.»

⁵He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” The people departed.

⁵او به آن ها گفت: «برای من سه روز مهلت بدهید بعد دوباره پیش من بیائید.» مردم قبول کردند و براه خود رفتند.

⁶King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?”

⁶آنگاه رَحُبعام با مو سفیدان قوم که قبلاً مشاورین پدرش بودند مشوره کرد و از آن ها پرسید: «نظریۀ شما چیست؟ چه جوابی به آن ها بدهم؟»

⁷They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

⁷آن ها گفتند: «اگر با مردم به مهربانی رفتار کنی، آن ها را از خود راضی سازی و حرف خوب به آن ها بزنی، آنوقت آن ها همیشه خدمتگار تو خواهند بود.»

⁸But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

⁸اما رَحُبعام به مشورۀ بزرگان گوش نداد و از جوانانی که با او یکجا بزرگ شده بودند مصلحت خواست

⁹He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?’”

⁹و پرسید: «به این مردمی که به من گفتند: بار سنگینی را که پدرت بردوش ما گذاشت سبک بساز. چه جوابی بدهم؟»

¹⁰The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.

¹⁰آن ها جواب دادند: «به آنهائی که به تو گفتند: بار سنگین پدرت را از دوش ما سبک بساز. اینطور جواب بده: انگشت کوچک من ضخیمتر از کمر پدرم است و

¹¹Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”

¹¹یوغ سنگینی را که پدرم بر دوش شما گذاشت من آنرا سنگینتر می کنم. پدرم شما را با قمچین سرزنش کرد و من شما را با گژدم تنبیه می کنم.»

¹²So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”

¹²یَرُبعام و مردم، قراریکه شاه به آن ها گفته بود، در روز سوم پیش او آمدند.

¹³The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

¹³پادشاه به آن ها جواب سخت داد و مشورۀ مو سفیدان را فراموش کرد

¹⁴and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”

¹⁴و به مردم طبق نظریۀ جوانان جواب داد و گفت: «یوغ سنگینی را که پدرم بر دوش شما گذاشت من سنگینترش می سازم. پدرم شما را با قمچین سرزنش کرد، ولی من شما را با گژدم تنبیه می کنم.»

¹⁵So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹⁵به این ترتیب پادشاه به تقاضای مردم گوش نداد، زیرا خواست خدا همین بود تا آنچه را که خداوند قبلاً بوسیلۀ اخیای شیلونی در بارۀ یَرُبعام، پسر نباط پیشگوئی فرموده بود، عملی سازد.

¹⁶When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.

¹⁶بنابران، چون مردم دیدند که پادشاه درخواست آن ها را رد کرد در جواب او گفتند: «ما با داود سروکار نداریم؛ ما را با پسر یسی رابطه ای نیست. ای مردم اسرائیل، به خانه های تان بروید؛ و تو هم ای داود، متوجه فامیل خود باش.» پس همه مردم به خانه های خود برگشتند.

¹⁷But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

¹⁷و رَحُبعام تنها پادشاه آن عده از مردم اسرائیل بود که در شهرهای یَهُودا زندگی می کردند.

¹⁸Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

¹⁸بعد رَحُبعام، هدورام را که رئیس کارگران اجباری بود، برای جلب مردم فرستاد، اما مردم اسرائیل او را سنگسار کردند و کشتند و رَحُبعام با عجله بر اسپ خود سوار شد و به اورشلیم فرار کرد.بنابران، مردم سلطنت شمالی اسرائیل تا به امروز علیه خانوادۀ داود هستند.

¹⁹So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
