¹When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

¹وقتی قرار بر این شد که ما از راه بحر به ایتالیا سفر کنیم، پولُس و چند زندانی دیگر را به صاحب منصبی به نام یولیوس از فرقۀ اوغُسطُس تحویل دادند.

²Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea; Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

²به کشتی ادرامیتینی که عازم بندرهای ایالت آسیا بود سوار شدیم و حرکت کردیم و اَرِستَرخُس مقدونی از اهالی تسالونیکی همراه ما بود.

³The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

³روز بعد در بندر صیدون لنگر انداختیم و یولیوس به پولُس محبت کرد و اجازه داد که در آنجا به دیدن دوستان خود برود و ضروریات خود را از آنها بگیرد.

⁴Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

⁴از آنجا بار دیگر راه بحر را در پیش گرفتیم و چون باد از جهت مخالف می وزید از حاشیه قبرس که باد پناه بود عبور نمودیم

⁵When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

⁵و پس از گذشتن از آب های قیلیقیه و پمفیلیه به میرای لیکیه رسیدیم.

⁶There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.

⁶صاحب منصب در آنجا یک کشتی اسکندریه ای را که عازم ایتالیا بود پیدا کرد و ما را سوار آن نمود.

⁷When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

⁷روزهای زیادی به آهستگی پیش می رفتیم و با زحمت فراوان به بندر قنیدوس رسیدیم و چون باد مخالف ما بود، جهت دیگر را در پیش گرفتیم و از کنار دماغۀ سَلمونی و ساحل جزیرۀ کریت که پناهگاه بود، راندیم.

⁸With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

⁸به سختی از آنجا گذشته به نزدیکیهای شهر لسائیه به محلی به نام «بندر نیک» رسیدیم.

⁹When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them,

⁹زمان زیادی را در آنجا گذرانیده بودیم و دیگر ادامۀ سفر ما با خطر روبرو بود، زیرا مدت زیادی از روز کفاره، که در اوایل خزان است گذشته بود. پس پولُس به آن ها نصیحت نموده

¹⁰and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”

¹⁰گفت: «آقایان، می بینم که سفر ما از اینجا به بعد پُر خطر خواهد بود. به کشتی و بار آن خسارت و زیان خواهد رسید و برای خود ما هم تلفات جانی خواهد داشت.»

¹¹But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

¹¹اما صاحب منصب به حرفهای ناخدای کشتی و صاحب آن بیشتر توجه داشت تا به سخنان پولُس

¹²Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking northeast and southeast.

¹²و نظر به اینکه آن بندر برای اقامت زمستانی نامناسب بود، اکثر آنها صلاح دانستند که از آنجا حرکت کنند تا شاید به فینیکاس برسند و زمستان را در آنجا که بندری کریتی و رو به شمال غربی و جنوب غربی است بگذرانند.

¹³When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.

¹³پس وقتی نسیم جنوبی برخاست به گمان آنکه به مقصد خود رسیده اند، لنگر کشتی را برداشتند و از نزدیک کنارۀ کریت گذشتیم.

¹⁴But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon. Or, “a northeaster.”

¹⁴اما طولی نکشید که باد شدیدی که به باد شمال شرقی معروف است از خشکی بطرف ما برخاست و

¹⁵When the ship was caught, and couldn’t face the wind, we gave way to it, and were driven along.

¹⁵به کشتی زد و ما قادر نبودیم کشتی را مستقیماً در خلاف جهت باد هدایت کنیم، بنابراین خود را به دست باد سپردیم تا با جریان آن پیش رویم.

¹⁶Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.

¹⁶در پناه جزیرۀ کوچکی به نام کاودا با زحمت زیاد توانستیم قایق کشتی را به اختیار خود در آوریم.

¹⁷After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

¹⁷آنها قایق را به کشتی سوار کردند و با طناب اطراف کشتی را محکم بستند و از ترس اینکه مبادا کشتی در جاهای کم عمق خلیج سیرتیس گیر کند، بادبان کشتی را پایین کشیدند و ما همچنان با جریان باد پیش می رفتیم.

¹⁸As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.

¹⁸باد شدید ادامه داشت، به طوری که روز دوم بار کشتی را به بحر ریختند

¹⁹On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.

¹⁹و در روز سوم اسباب و لوازم کشتی را با دست خود به بحر انداختند.

²⁰When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.

²⁰روزهای زیاد نه آفتاب به چشم می خورد و نه ستارگان. باد همچنان با شدت می وزید و دیگر هیچ امیدی به نجات ما نبود.

²¹When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them, and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss.

²¹وقتی که مدت زیادی بدون غذا راه پیمودند، پولُس در میان ایشان ایستاد و گفت: «ای دوستان، کاش به حرفهای من گوش می دادید و از کریت سفر نمی کردید تا از اینهمه ضرر و زیان در امان می بودید.

²²Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

²²خوب، حالا که این طور شده از شما می خواهم که خود را نبازید. هیچ ضرری به جان کسی نخواهد رسید، فقط کشتی از دست خواهد رفت،

²³For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,

²³زیرا دیشب فرشتۀ آن خدایی که من از او هستم و او را می پرستم، در کنار من ایستاد

²⁴saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

²⁴و گفت: «ای پولُس نترس زیرا تو باید در حضور امپراطور حاضر شوی و خدا جانِ همۀ همسفرانت را به تو بخشیده است.»

²⁵Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.

²⁵پس آقایان باید قویدل باشید، زیرا من به خدا ایمان دارم و می دانم همان طوری که به من گفته است خواهد شد.

²⁶But we must run aground on a certain island.”

²⁶ولی به کنارۀ یکی از این جزایر رانده خواهیم شد.»

²⁷But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.

²⁷وقتی شب چهاردهم فرا رسید و ما هنوز در بحیرۀ آدریاتیک از این سو به آن سو رانده می شدیم، نزدیک نصف شب ملاحان احساس کردند که به خشکی نزدیک می شوند.

²⁸They took soundings, and found twenty fathoms. 20 fathoms = 120 feet = 36.6 meters After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms. 15 fathoms = 90 feet = 27.4 meters

²⁸پس عمق پیمایی کردند و به عمق تقریباً سی و هشت متر رسیدند و به فاصله کوتاهی دوباره اندازه گیری نمودند و به عمق بیست و هفت متری رسیدند.

²⁹Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.

²⁹و چون می ترسیدند که به سنگ ها بخوریم، چهار لنگر از پشت کشتی به بحر انداختند و دعا می کردند که زودتر روز شود.

³⁰As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,

³⁰ملاحان می خواستند کشتی را ترک کنند و برای عملی ساختن نقشۀ خود به بهانه اینکه می خواهند لنگرها را از پیش کشتی به بحر بیندازند، قایق را به آب انداختند.

³¹Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved.”

³¹اما پولُس به صاحب منصب و عساکر گفت: «اگر ملاحان در کشتی نمانند نجات شما ممکن نخواهد بود.»

³²Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let it fall off.

³²پس عساکر طنابهای قایق را بریدند و آن را رها کردند.

³³While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “This day is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

³³کمی پیش از سپیده دم، پولُس به همه اصرار می کرد که چیزی بخورند. او گفت: «امروز چهارده روز است که در بلاتکلیفی به سر می برید و چیزی نخورده اید.

³⁴Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.”

³⁴تمنا دارم چیزی بخورید زیرا نجات جان شما بسته به آنست. مویی از سر هیچیک از شما کم نخواهد شد.»

³⁵When he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it, and began to eat.

³⁵با این سخنان نان را برداشت و در حضور همۀ آنها پس از آنکه خدا را شکر نمود پاره کرد و شروع به خوردن نمود.

³⁶Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.

³⁶پس همه قویدل گشتند و غذا خوردند.

³⁷In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.

³⁷(تعداد ما در کشتی جمعاً دو صد و هفتاد و شش نفر بود.)

³⁸When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

³⁸پس از آنکه سیر شدند بقیۀ غله را به بحر ریختند تا کشتی را سبک نمایند.

³⁹When it was day, they didn’t recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.

³⁹وقتی صبح شد، ملاحان خشکی را نشناختند اما متوجه خلیجی با ساحل ریگی شدند. تصمیم گرفتند که در صورت امکان کشتی را در آنجا به گِل بنشانند.

⁴⁰Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

⁴⁰سپس بند لنگر ها را بریدند و آن ها را در بحر رها کردند و همان موقع بندهای سُکان را هم شُل کردند و بادبان پیش کشتی را بالا کشیدند و کشتی را یکراست به طرف ساحل راندند.

⁴¹But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.

⁴¹کشتی به یکی از تپه های زیر آب برخورد کرد و در آنجا گیر نموده دماغۀ کشتی ثابت و بی حرکت ماند ولی قسمت عقب در نتیجه بر خورد با امواج شدید در هم شکست.

⁴²The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.

⁴²در اینموقع عساکر فکر می کردند بهتر است زندانیان را بکشند، مبادا کسی از ایشان بوسیله شنا فرار کند.

⁴³But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land;

⁴³اما صاحب منصبی که می خواست پولُس را سالم به مقصد برساند، مانع انجام نقشه آنها شد. او امر کرد که اول کسانی که شنا بلد بودند، خود را از کشتی به داخل آب بیآندازند و خود را به خشکی برسانند.و بقیه یا روی تخته پاره ها و یا روی قطعات کشتی بدنبال آنها بروند. به این ترتیب همۀ ما صحیح و سالم به خشکی رسیدیم.

⁴⁴and the rest should follow, some on planks, and some on other things from the ship. So it happened that they all escaped safely to the land.

⁴⁴و بقیه یا روی تخته پاره ها و یا روی قطعات کشتی بدنبال آنها بروند. به این ترتیب همۀ ما صحیح و سالم به خشکی رسیدیم.
