1Now it happened in the days of Ahasuerus (this is Ahasuerus who reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over one hundred twenty-seven provinces),
1خشایار شاه، پادشاه فارس از قصر خود در شهر شوش بر قلمروی که از یکصد و بیست و هفت ولایت ـ از هندوستان تا حبشه ـ تشکیل شده بود فرمانروائی می کرد.
2that in those days, when the King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
2او در سومین سال سلطنت خود به افتخار افسران ارشد و وزرای خویش ضیافت بزرگی برپا کرد. سرکردگان نظامی فارس و ماد، و همچنین والیان و نجبای ولایات در آن جشن حضور داشتند.
3in the third year of his reign, he made a feast for all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him.
3و پادشاه تمام غنایم دربار و شکوه و جلال آن را به مدت شش ماه تمام به معرض تماشا قرار داد.
4He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even one hundred eighty days.
4بعد از آن، پادشاه مهمانی بزرگی برای تمام اهالی پایتخت، چه فقیر و چه غنی، ترتیب داد. محل این مهمانی ها در باغ های قصر سلطنتی بود و مدت یک هفتۀ کامل ادامه داشت.
5When these days were fulfilled, the king made a seven day feast for all the people who were present in Shushan the palace, both great and small, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.
5حویلی قصر با پرده های کتان آبی و سفید تزئین شده بود. این پرده ها بوسیلۀ ریسمانهای بنفش به حلقه های نقره ای ستونهای مرمر متصل بودند. تخت های طلا و نقره بر در حویلی قصر بروی سنگفرش هایی از مرمر سفید، دُر، مرمر سیاه و فیروزه قرار داشت.
6There were hangings of white, green, and blue material, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars. The couches were of gold and silver, on a pavement of red, white, yellow, and black marble.
6شراب در جام های طلایی که به اشکال مختلف ساخته شده بود صرف می شد و پادشاه در دادن شراب سلطنتی به مردم سخاوت فراوان داشت.
7They gave them drinks in golden vessels of various kinds, including royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king.
7در نوشیدن شراب محدودیتی وجود نداشت، زیرا پادشاه به خادمین دربار امر کرده بود که هرکس هر قدر بخواهد می تواند بنوشد.
8In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had instructed all the officials of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.
8در همان موقع، ملکه وشتی در داخل قصر خشایار شاه ضیافتی برای زنان ترتیب داده بود.
9Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
9در هفتمین روز ضیافت، پادشاه که از نوشیدن شراب سرمست بود، هفت خواجه سرای دربار را که مَهُومان، بِزتا، حَربونا، بِگتا، اَبَغتا، زاتَر، و کَرکَس نام داشتند و خادمین شخصی او بودند، احضار کرد
10On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcass, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
10و به آن ها امر کرد که ملکه وشتی را، با تاج سلطنتی بر سر، به حضور او بیاورند. ملکه زن زیبائی بود و پادشاه می خواست صاحب منصبان و تمام مهمانان او ببینند که ملکه چقدر زیبا است.
11to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.
11اما وقتی خادمین فرمان شاه را به ملکه وشتی ابلاغ کردند، او از رفتن ابا ورزید. پادشاه از این موضوع بسیار خشمگین شد.
12But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.
12پادشاه عادت داشت که نظریۀ مشاورین خود را در مورد اجرای قانون جویا شود. بنابراین، مشاورین خود را احضار کرد تا از آن ها بپرسد که چه باید بکند.
13Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times, (for it was the king’s custom to consult those who knew law and judgment;
13نام این هفت نفر از بزرگان فارس و ماد به نامهای کَرشَنا، شیتار، اَدماتا، ترشیش، مَرَس، مَرسَنا و مموکان بود. این اشخاص بیشتر از سایر مأمورین، مورد اعتماد شاه و در دربار امپراتوری دارای مقامات عالی بودند.
14and the next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom),
14پادشاه به این افراد گفت: «من، خشایار شاه، خادمین خود را با فرمانی به نزد ملکه وشتی فرستادم، ولی او از فرمان من سرپیچی کرد. مجازات او بر طبق قانون چیست؟»
15“What shall we do to the queen Vashti according to law, because she has not done the bidding of the King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?”
15آنگاه مموکان به پادشاه و مأمورین او گفت: «ملکه وشتی نه تنها به پادشاه و مأمورین دربار، بلکه در حقیقت به تمام مردان امپراطوری اهانت کرده است.
16Memucan answered before the king and the princes, “Vashti the queen has not done wrong to just the king, but also to all the princes, and to all the people who are in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus.
16وقتی زنان در امپراطوری بشنوند که ملکه چه کرده است، با تحقیر به شوهران خود می نگرند. آن ها خواهند گفت: «خشایار شاه فرمان داد که ملکه وشتی به حضور او برود، اما ملکه از فرمان او اطاعت نکرد.»
17For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands, when it is reported, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn’t come.’
17وقتی زنان درباری فارس و ماد از رفتار ملکه آگاه شوند، آن ها قبل از آنکه روز به پایان برسد، آنرا برای شوهران خود تعریف می کنند. دیگر زنان احترامی برای شوهران خود قائل نمی شوند و این موضوع موجب خشم شوهران می گردد.
18Today, the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s deed will tell all the king’s princes. This will cause much contempt and wrath.
18اگر پادشاه صلاح بدانند، فرمانی صادر کنند که ملکه وشتی دیگر هیچ وقت اجازۀ شرفیابی به حضور شاه را نداشته باشد. همچنین امر فرمائید که این مطلب در قوانین فارس و ماد ثبت گردد تا هرگز قابل تغییر نباشد. سپس زنی که بهتر از او باشد، به عنوان ملکه انتخاب شود.
19“If it please the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.
19وقتی این فرمان شما در سراسر این امپراطوری وسیع اعلام شود، آن وقت تمام زنها با شوهران خود چه فقیر و چه غنی با احترام رفتار خواهند کرد.»
20When the king’s decree which he shall make is published throughout all his kingdom (for it is great), all the wives will give their husbands honor, both great and small.”
20پادشاه و مأمورینش این پیشنهاد او را پسندیدند، و پادشاه مطابق پیشنهاد مموکان عمل کرد،و به هر یک از ولایات امپراطوری پیامی به خط و زبان محلی آن ناحیه فرستاد که مطابق آن شوهران رئیس خانوادۀ خود باشند و امر شان باید اطاعت شود.
21This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
21و به هر یک از ولایات امپراطوری پیامی به خط و زبان محلی آن ناحیه فرستاد که مطابق آن شوهران رئیس خانوادۀ خود باشند و امر شان باید اطاعت شود.
22for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.
