¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

¹مردی به نام ایلعازَر، از اهالی بیت عنیا یعنی دهکده مریم و خواهرش مرتا، مریض بود.

²It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

²مریم همان بود که به پاهای خداوند عطر ریخت و آن ها را با مو های خود خشک کرد و اکنون برادرش ایلعازَر بیمار بود.

³The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

³پس خواهرانش برای عیسی پیغام فرستادند که: «ای خداوند، آن کسی که تو او را دوست داری بیمار است.»

⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

⁴وقتی عیسی این را شنید گفت: «این بیماری به مرگ او منجر نخواهد شد بلکه وسیله ای برای جلال خداست تا پسر خدا نیز از این راه جلال یابد.»

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁵عیسی مرتا و خواهر او و ایلعازَر را دوست می داشت.

⁶When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁶پس وقتی از بیماری ایلعازَر باخبر شد دو روز دیگر در جایی که بود توقف کرد

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁷و سپس به شاگردان گفت: «بیایید باز هم به یهودیه برویم.»

⁸The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?”

⁸شاگردان به او گفتند: «ای استاد، هنوز از آن وقت که یهودیان می خواستند تو را سنگسار کنند چیزی نگذشته است. آیا باز هم می خواهی به آنجا بروی؟»

⁹Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

⁹عیسی جواب داد: «آیا یک روز دوازده ساعت نیست؟ کسی که در روز راه می رود لغزش نمی خورد زیرا نور این جهان را می بیند.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹⁰اما اگر کسی در شب راه برود می لغزد زیرا در او هیچ نوری وجود ندارد.»

¹¹He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹¹عیسی این را گفت و افزود: «دوست ما ایلعازَر خوابیده است اما من می روم تا او را بیدار کنم.»

¹²The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹²شاگردان گفتند: «ای خداوند، اگر او خواب باشد حتماً خوب خواهد شد.»

¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹³عیسی از مرگ او سخن می گفت اما آن ها تصور کردند مقصد او خواب معمولی است.

¹⁴So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁴آنگاه عیسی بطور واضح به آن ها گفت: «ایلعازَر مرده است.

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁵به خاطر شما خوشحالم که آنجا نبوده ام چون حالا می توانید ایمان بیاورید. بیایید پیش او برویم.»

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, “Didymus” means “Twin” said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.”

¹⁶توما که او را دو گانگی می گفتند به دیگر شاگردان گفت: «بیایید ما هم برویم تا با او بمیریم.»

¹⁷So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁷وقتی عیسی به آنجا رسید معلوم شد که چهار روز است او را دفن کرده اند.

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away.

¹⁸بیت عنیا کمتر از نیم فرسنگ از اورشلیم فاصله داشت

¹⁹Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

¹⁹و بسیاری از یهودیان نزد مرتا و مریم آمده بودند تا به خاطر مرگ برادر شان آن ها را تسلی دهند.

²⁰Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²⁰مرتا همینکه شنید عیسی در راه است برای استقبال او بیرون رفت ولی مریم در خانه ماند.

²¹Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²¹مرتا به عیسی گفت: «خداوندا، اگر تو اینجا می بودی برادرم نمی مُرد.

²²Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²²با وجود این می دانم که حالا هم هرچه از خدا بخواهی به تو عطا خواهد کرد.»

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²³عیسی گفت: «برادرت باز زنده خواهد شد.»

²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁴مرتا گفت: «می دانم که او در روز قیامت زنده خواهد شد.»

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁵عیسی گفت: «من قیامت و زندگی هستم. کسی که به من ایمان بیاورد حتی اگر بمیرد، زندگی خواهد داشت

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁶و کسی که زنده باشد و به من ایمان بیاورد هرگز نخواهد مرد. آیا این را باور می کنی؟»

²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁷مرتا گفت: «بلی، خداوندا، من ایمان دارم که تو مسیح و پسر خدا هستی که می باید به دنیا بیاید.»

²⁸When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

²⁸پس از اینکه این را گفت رفت و خواهر خود مریم را صدا کرد و به طور پنهانی به او گفت: «استاد آمده است و تو را می خواهد.»

²⁹When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

²⁹وقتی مریم این را شنید فوراً برخاست و به طرف عیسی رفت.

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³⁰عیسی هنوز به دهکده نرسیده بود بلکه در همان جایی بود که مرتا به دیدن او رفت.

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³¹یهودیانی که برای تسلی دادن به مریم در خانه بودند وقتی دیدند که او با عجله برخاسته و از خانه بیرون می رود به دنبال او رفتند و با خود می گفتند که او می خواهد به سر قبر برود تا در آنجا گریه کند.

³²Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³²همین که مریم به جایی که عیسی بود آمد و او را دید، به پاهای او افتاده گفت: «خداوندا، اگر در این جا می بودی برادرم نمی مُرد.»

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³³عیسی وقتی او و یهودیانی را که همراه او بودند گریان دید از دل آهی کشید و سخت متأثر شد

³⁴and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁴و پرسید: «او را کجا گذاشته اید؟» جواب دادند: «خداوندا، بیا و ببین.»

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁵عیسی گریست.

³⁶The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁶یهودیان گفتند: «ببینید چقدر او را دوست داشت؟»

³⁷Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁷اما بعضی گفتند: «آیا این مرد که چشمان کور را باز کرد نمی توانست کاری بکند که جلوی مرگ ایلعازَر را بگیرد؟»

³⁸Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁸پس عیسی در حالی که از دل آه می کشید به سر قبر آمد. قبر غاری بود که سنگی پیش روی آن گذاشته بودند.

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

³⁹عیسی گفت: «سنگ را بردارید.» مرتا خواهر ایلعازَر گفت: «خداوندا، حالا چهار روز از مرگ او می گذرد و بو گرفته است.»

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴⁰عیسی به او گفت: «آیا به تو نگفتم که اگر ایمان داشته باشی جلال خدا را خواهی دید؟»

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. NU omits “from the place where the dead man was lying.” Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴¹پس سنگ را از پیش روی قبر برداشتند. آنگاه عیسی به آسمان نگاه کرد و گفت: «ای پدر، تو را شکر می کنم که سخن مرا شنیده ای.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴²من می دانستم که تو همیشه سخن مرا می شنوی ولی به خاطر کسانی که اینجا ایستاده اند این را گفتم تا آن ها ایمان بیاورند که تو مرا فرستاده ای.»

⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴³پس از این سخنان، عیسی با صدای بلند فریاد زد: «ای ایلعازَر، بیرون بیا.»

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁴آن مرده، در حالی که دست ها و پاهایش با کفن بسته شده و صورتش با دستمال پوشیده بود، بیرون آمد. عیسی به آن ها گفت: «او را باز کنید و بگذارید برود.»

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁵بسیاری از یهودیانی که برای دیدن مریم آمده بودند، وقتی آنچه را عیسی انجام داد مشاهده کردند، به او ایمان آوردند.

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁶اما بعضی از آن ها پیش فریسی ها رفتند و کارهایی را که عیسی انجام داده بود به آن ها گزارش دادند.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁷فریسی ها و سران کاهنان با شورای بزرگ یهود جلسه ای تشکیل دادند و گفتند: «چه کنیم؟ این مرد معجزات زیادی می کند.

⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁸اگر او را همینطور آزاد بگذاریم همۀ مردم به او ایمان خواهند آورد و آن وقت رومیان خواهند آمد و جا و ملت ما را خواهند گرفت.»

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁴⁹یکی از آن ها یعنی قیافا که در آن سال کاهن اعظم بود گفت: «شما اصلاً چیزی نمی دانید.

⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

⁵⁰متوجه نیستید که لازم است یک نفر به خاطر قوم بمیرد تا ملت ما به کلی نابود نشود.»

⁵¹Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

⁵¹او این سخن را از خود نگفت، بلکه چون در آن سال کاهن اعظم بود پیشگویی کرد که عیسی در راه قوم یهود خواهد مُرد

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

⁵²و نه تنها در راه آن قوم بلکه تا فرزندان خدا را که پراگنده هستند بصورت یک بدن واحد به هم بپیوندد.

⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵³از آن روز به بعد آن ها نقشه قتل او را کشیدند.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

⁵⁴بعد از آن عیسی دیگر به طور آشکار در بین یهودیان رفت و آمد نمی کرد، بلکه از آنجا به ناحیه ای نزدیک بیابان به شهری به نام افرایم رفت و با شاگردان خود در آنجا ماند.

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁵عید فِصَح یهودیان نزدیک بود و عدۀ زیادی از آبادی های اطراف به اورشلیم آمدند تا پیش از عید خود را تطهیر نمایند.

⁵⁶Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

⁵⁶آن ها در جستجوی عیسی بودند و در عبادتگاه به یکدیگر می گفتند: «او به عید نخواهد آمد. نظر شما چیست؟»اما سران کاهنان و پیروان فرقۀ فریسی امر کرده بودند که هرکه بداند عیسی کجاست اطلاع دهد تا او را دستگیر نمایند.

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

⁵⁷اما سران کاهنان و پیروان فرقۀ فریسی امر کرده بودند که هرکه بداند عیسی کجاست اطلاع دهد تا او را دستگیر نمایند.
