¹Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

¹پس یوشع، پسر نون دو نفر جاسوس را محرمانه از شِطیم به کنعان فرستاد و گفت: «بروید و وضع و شرایط آنجا را و مخصوصاً از شهر اریحا را بررسی و مطالعه کنید.» آندو رفتند و در آنجا در خانۀ زن فاحشه ای بنام راحاب شب را بسر بردند.

²The king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

²به پادشاه اریحا خبر دادند و گفتند: «دو نفر اسرائیلی به کشور تان برای جاسوسی آمده اند.»

³The king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

³پادشاهِ اریحا به راحاب پیغام فرستاده گفت: «مردانی که در خانۀ تو هستند، جاسوس می باشند. آن ها را پیش من بیاور.»

⁴The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I didn’t know where they came from.

⁴اما راحاب آن دو نفر را پنهان کرده گفت: «بلی، آن مردان نزد من آمدند، ولی من ندانستم که آن ها از کجا آمده بودند.

⁵It happened about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly; for you will overtake them.”

⁵و هنگام غروب آفتاب، پیش از آنکه دروازه های شهر بسته شوند، اینجا را ترک کردند. و نمی دانم که به کجا رفتند. حالا هم وقت دارید که اگر عجله کنید، شاید آن ها را دستگیر نمائید.»

⁶But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.

⁶سپس راحاب آن دو نفر را بسر بام برد و زیر شاخه های کتان که بر بام چیده بود پنهان کرد.

⁷The men pursued them the way to the Jordan to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

⁷فرستادگان شاه از جاده ایکه بطرف اُردن می رفت به تعقیب جاسوسان تا دریای اُردن رفتند. و بعد از رفتن آن ها دروازه های شهر بسته شدند.

⁸Before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof;

⁸پیش از آنکه جاسوسان بخوابند، راحاب به سر بام رفت

⁹and she said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

⁹و به آن ها گفت: «من می دانم که خداوند این سرزمین را به شما می دهد. همۀ مردم این سرزمین از شما می ترسند و هر وقتیکه نام قوم اسرائیل را می شنوند، به وحشت می افتند.

¹⁰For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

¹⁰و ما شنیده ایم که چون از مصر خارج می شدید، چطور خداوند بحیرۀ احمر را برای تان خشک کرد و چگونه سیحون و عوج، دو پادشاه شرق اُردن را از بین بردید.

¹¹As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

¹¹بمجردی که خبر آن به گوش ما رسید، همگی از ترس شما، به وحشت افتادیم و دل و جرأت خود را از دست دادیم. بیشک که خداوند، خدای شما، خدای آسمان در عالم بالا و خدای زمین در دنیای پائین است.

¹²Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;

¹²پس حالا بنام خداوند قسم بخورید تا همانطوریکه من با شما با مهربانی رفتار کردم، شما هم با فامیل من بخوبی رفتار کنید. و به من اطمینان بدهید که قصد کشتن پدر، مادر، برادران، خواهران مرا و خانوادۀ شانرا نخواهید داشت.»

¹³and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”

¹³آن ها به راحاب گفتند: «اگر به آنچه می گوئیم عمل نکنیم، خدا ما را بکشد. و اگر تو از نقشۀ ما چیزی به کسی نگوئی، البته وقتی خداوند این سرزمین را به ما داد با شما با مهربانی و وفاداری رفتار می کنیم.»

¹⁴The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”

¹⁴بعد راحاب آن ها را با ریسمان از راه کلکین پائین کرد، چونکه خانۀ او در دیوار شهر آباد شده بود.

¹⁵Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.

¹⁵و به آن ها گفت: «بسر کوه بروید و برای سه روز خود را در آنجا پنهان کنید تا آنهائی که در تعقیب شما هستند برگردند و آنگاه پی کار خود بروید.»

¹⁶She said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way.”

¹⁶آن ها به راحاب گفتند: «ما به این وعده ایکه از ما خواستی وفا می کنیم.

¹⁷The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us to swear.

¹⁷وقتیکه این سرزمین را به دست آوردیم این طناب سرخ را به کلکینی که ما را از آن پائین کردی ببند. و تو باید پدر، مادر، برادران، خواهران و تمام خانوادۀ پدرت را در خانه ات جمع کنی.

¹⁸Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.

¹⁸و هر کسیکه از خانه ات بیرون شود و به کوچه برود خونش به گردن خودش می باشد و گناه ما نخواهد بود. و اگر به کسیکه در خانۀ تو باشد و صدمه ای برسد، البته ما مسئول خواهیم بود.

¹⁹It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.

¹⁹و اگر تو از نقشۀ ما به کسی اطلاع بدهی، آنوقت ما مجبور نخواهیم بود که به وعدۀ خود که به تو می دهیم، عمل کنیم.»

²⁰But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.”

²⁰راحاب موافقه نمود و آن ها را روانه کرد. وقتی آن ها رفتند، او طناب سرخ را به کلکین بست.

²¹She said, “According to your words, so be it.” She sent them away, and they departed. She tied the scarlet line in the window.

²¹آن ها بسر کوه رفتند و مدت سه روز در آنجا پنهان شدند. تا وقتیکه فرستادگان شاه برگشتند. آن ها سراسر کشور را جستجو کردند، ولی جاسوسان را نیافتند.

²²They went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn’t find them.

²²آنگاه جاسوسان از کوه پائین شدند، از دریا عبور کرده پیش یوشع پسر نون برگشتند. و همه وقایع سفر خود را به او گزارش دادندو گفتند: «حالا به ما ثابت شد که خداوند همۀ آن سرزمین را به ما داده است. علاوتاً تمام مردم آنجا بی نهایت از ما می ترسند.»

²³Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.

²³و گفتند: «حالا به ما ثابت شد که خداوند همۀ آن سرزمین را به ما داده است. علاوتاً تمام مردم آنجا بی نهایت از ما می ترسند.»

²⁴They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has delivered into our hands all the land. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”
