1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against the children of Israel.
1خداوند مردم اسرائیل را منع کرده بود که نباید از آن چیز هائیکه باید از بین برده شوند، برای خود بگیرند. اما فرمان خداوند اطاعت نشد، زیرا عَخان پسر کَرمی نواسۀ زَبدی کواسۀ زِرَح که از قبیلۀ یهودا بود، امر خدا را بجا نیاورد. بنابران، غضب خداوند بر بنی اسرائیل افروخته گردید.
2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.
2یوشع چند نفر را از اریحا به شهر عای که در شرق بیت ئیل و در نزدیکی بیت آوَن بود، فرستاد تا معلوماتی دربارۀ آن جا به دست آورند. آن ها بعد از آنکه مأموریت خود را به انجام رساندند،
3They returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Don’t let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them.”
3نتیجۀ بازرسی خود را به یوشع چنین گزارش دادند: «حاجت نیست که همگی برای حمله به شهر عای بروند. چون عای یک شهر بسیار کوچک است، فقط دو یا سه هزار نفر کافی است که آن شهر را فتح کنند، نه اینکه همۀ لشکر را بفرستیم.»
4So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai.
4بنابران، در حدود سه هزار عسکر اسرائیلی رفتند و حمله را شروع کردند. اما اسرائیلی ها شکست خورده فرار کردند.
5The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them, and they chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.
5عساکر عای آن ها را از دروازۀ شهر تا شباریم (یعنی معدن سنگ) تعقیب کرده تقریباً سی و شش نفر شان را در سرازیری کوه کشتند. مردم اسرائیل به خاطر این واقعه جرأت خود را از دست داده و به وحشت افتادند.
6Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of Yahweh until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
6یوشع و سرکردگان اسرائیل یخن خود را پاره کرده تا شام در برابر صندوق پیمان خداوند روی بخاک افتادند و خاک بر سر خود باد کردند
7Joshua said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan!
7و گفتند: «ای خداوند متعال، چرا ما را از اُردن عبور دادی و به اینجا آوردی تا به دست اموریان کشته شویم؟ کاش از آنطرف اُردن نمی آمدیم.
8Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!
8خداوندا، حالا چه چاره کنیم؟ مردم اسرائیل همه فرار کرده اند.
9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?”
9و اگر کنعانیان و دیگر کشورهای اطراف ما از این ماجرا باخبر شوند، ما را محاصره کرده همه را نیست و نابود می کنند. آنوقت چه کاری کرده می توانیم؟ و می ترسیم که به نام مقدست بی احترامی شود.»
10Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you fallen on your face like that?
10خداوند به یوشع فرمود: «برخیز، چرا روی بخاک افتاده ای؟
11Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff.
11مردم اسرائیل همه گناهکار اند. به پیمانی که من با آن ها بسته بودم، وفا نکردند. چیزهای ممنوع را که باید از بین می بردند، برای خود گرفتند. دزدی کردند، دروغ گفتند و به دارائی خود افزودند.
12Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
12و از همین خاطر است که مردم اسرائیل در برابر دشمن مقاومت کرده نمی توانند و از آن ها فرار می کنند. و در نتیجه، خود شان باعث نابودی خود شده اند. و اگر آن چیزهای ممنوع را از بین نبرید، من دیگر با شما نخواهم بود.
13“Get up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, “There is a devoted thing in the midst of you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you.”
13پس برخیز و به مردم بگو که خود را پاک کنند و برای فردا آماده شوند و برای شان بگو که خداوند، خدای اسرائیل چنین می فرماید: «شما مردم اسرائیل چیزهای ممنوع را که باید از بین برده می شدند برای خود نگهداشته اید و تا از آن چیزها صرف نظر نکنید، نمی توانید در برابر دشمن مقاومت نمائید.
14“‘In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which Yahweh selects shall come near by families. The family which Yahweh selects shall come near by households. The household which Yahweh selects shall come near man by man.
14فردا صبح همه قبایل حاضر شوند و قبیلۀ مسئول را که خداوند مشخص می کند با تمام خانواده های خود پیش بیایند. بعد خانوادۀ گناهکار را جدا کنید و هر عضو آن یکه یکه پیش بیاید.
15It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of Yahweh, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
15و آن کسیکه مال ممنوعه را برای خود گرفته است، با همه دارائی اش در آتش سوختانده شود، زیرا که آن شخص پیمان خداوند را شکسته و سبب شده است که اینهمه بدبختی ها بر سر اسرائیل بیایند.»»
16So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected.
16پس یوشع صبح وقت فردای آن روز برخاسته بنی اسرائیل را قبیله قبیله جمع کرد و قبیلۀ یهودا مسئول شناخته شد.
17He brought near the family of Judah; and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected.
17بعد هر خانوادۀ یهودا پیش آمد و قرعه بنام خانوادۀ زِرَح اصابت کرد. آنگاه هر فامیل پیش آمد و فامیل زَبدی را جدا کردند.
18He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
18وقتیکه هر مرد فامیل زَبدی پیش آمد، عَخان پسر کَرمی نواسۀ زَبدی کواسۀ زِرَح از قبیلۀ یهودا گناهکار شناخته شد.
19Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please give glory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done! Don’t hide it from me!”
19آنگاه یوشع به عَخان گفت: «فرزندم، خداوند، خدای اسرائیل را تجلیل و تمجید کن و راست بگو که چه کرده ای؟»
20Achan answered Joshua, and said, “I have truly sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done.
20عَخان جواب داد: «من در برابر خداوند، خدای اسرائیل واقعاً گناه کرده ام و کار بدی که از من سر زده است این است:
21When I saw among the spoil a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it.”
21از بین اموال غنیمت یک چپن شِنعاری، دوصد مثقال نقره و یک میلۀ طلا به وزن پنجاه مثقال مرا وسوسه کرد و از روی حرص آن ها را برای خود گرفتم و در خیمۀ خود در زیر خاک پنهان کرده ام. و نقره زیر همه قرار دارد.»
22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
22یوشع چند نفر را فرستاد و آن ها به طرف خیمه دویدند و دیدند که واقعاً همه چیزها را در خیمه درحالیکه نقره در زیر همه قرار داشت، پنهان کرده بود.
23They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before Yahweh.
23آن ها را از خیمه پیش یوشع و مردم اسرائیل آوردند و بحضور خداوند قرار دادند.
24Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
24پس یوشع همراه همه مردم اسرائیل، عخان پسر زِرَح را با نقره، چپن، میلۀ طلا، پسران، دختران، گاوها، خرها، گوسفندان، خیمه و همه دارائی اش گرفته در وادی عَخور آوردند.
25Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you this day.” All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
25یوشع به عَخان گفت: «چرا اینهمه مصیبت را بر سر ما آوردی؟ حالا خداوند، خودت را به مصیبت گرفتار می کند!» آنگاه همگی عَخان را همراه با فامیلش سنگسار کردند و بعد همه را در آتش سوختاندند.و تودۀ بزرگی از سنگ را بر آن ها انباشتند که تا به امروز باقی است. به این ترتیب، خشم خداوند فرونشست. و بنابران، آنجا را وادی مصیبت نامیدند.
26They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called “The valley of Achor” to this day.
26و تودۀ بزرگی از سنگ را بر آن ها انباشتند که تا به امروز باقی است. به این ترتیب، خشم خداوند فرونشست. و بنابران، آنجا را وادی مصیبت نامیدند.
