1It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it
1وقتی خبر پیروزی اسرائیل به گوش پادشاهان کشورهای اطراف رسید، فوراً یک قشون متحد تشکیل دادند تا در مقابل یوشع و سپاه او بجنگند. اینها پادشاهان کشورهای غرب دریای اُردن و سواحل بحر مدیترانه تا کوههای لبنان، یعنی حِتیان، اَمُوریان، کنعانیان، فِرزِیان، حویان و یبوسیان بودند.
2that they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
2اما چون مردم جِبعون شنیدند که یوشع چه بلائی بر سر اریحا و عای آورد، آن ها به نوبۀ خود حیله ای سنجیدند و چند نفر را پیش یوشع فرستادند.
3But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
3آن ها لباس کهنه و کفشهای پاره پوشیدند و الاغها را با مَشکهای پینه ئی شراب و نانهای قاق و پوپَنَک زده بار کردند.
4they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins, old and torn and bound up,
4و به اردوی یوشع در جِلجال آمدند. به او و مردم اسرائیل گفتند: «ما از یک کشور دور آمده ایم تا یک پیمان صلح با شما ببندیم.»
5and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
5مردم اسرائیل به حویان جواب دادند: «ما چه می دانیم. ممکن است شما در همین نزدیکی ها زندگی کنید. پس ما نمی توانیم با شما پیمان ببندیم.»
6They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”
6آن ها به یوشع گفتند: «ما خدمت شما را می کنیم.» یوشع از آن ها پرسید: «شما کیستید و از کجا آمده اید؟»
7The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?”
7آن ها جواب دادند: «ما از یک سرزمین دوردست آمده ایم، زیرا ما در بارۀ خداوند، خدای شما شنیده ایم که چه کارهای حیرت آوری در مصر انجام داد.
8They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”
8و بر سر دو پادشاهِ اموری، سیحون پادشاهِ حِشبون و عوج پادشاه باشان که در عَشتاروت زندگی می کردند، چه بلائی آورد.
9They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,
9بنابران، رهبران و باشندگان کشور ما گفتند که توشۀ سفر را گرفته به دیدن شما بیائیم و بگوئیم که ما در خدمت شما هستیم. پس بیائید با هم پیمان دوستی ببندیم.
10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
10وقتیکه از خانه های خود حرکت کردیم، این نانها را که برای توشۀ راهِ خود گرفتیم گرم و تازه بودند و حالا همه خشک و قاق شده اند.
11Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’
11این مشکهای شراب که اینک کهنه و پاره شده اند، آنوقت نو بودند. و کفشها و لباس ما هم در این سفر طولانی کهنه شده اند.»
12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.
12مردم اسرائیل بدون اینکه بخود زحمت بدهند و با خداوند مشوره کنند، از توشۀ راه آن ها خوردند.
13These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey.”
13و یوشع با آن ها پیمان صلح بست و به آن ها اجازه داد که در آنجا زندگی کنند. و رهبران اسرائیل قسم خوردند که به پیمان خود وفادار بمانند.
14The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from the mouth of Yahweh.
14سه روز بعد حقیقت آشکار شد و معلوم گردید که آن ها همسایۀ شان می باشند.
15Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.
15عساکر اسرائیل برای تحقیق رفتند و در روز سوم به آن شهرها که عبارت بودند از جِبعون، کِفَیره، بیروت و قریۀ یعاریم رسیدند.
16It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.
16اما مردم اسرائیل صدمه ای به آن ها نرساندند، زیرا رهبران شان به نام خداوند، خدای اسرائیل قسم خورده بودند، بنابران، آن ها بر رهبران خود قهر بودند که چرا با آن مردم پیمان صلح بستند.
17The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.
17رهبران شان گفتند: «ما به نام خداوند، خدای اسرائیل قسم خورده ایم که به آن ها آسیب نرسانیم، بنابران، با آن ها کاری نداریم.
18The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.
18و اگر کاری برخلاف قسمی که خورده ایم بکنیم، آنگاه به قهر و غضب خدا گرفتار می شویم.»
19But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
19رهبران شان اضافه کرده گفتند: «بگذارید که زنده بمانند.» پس آن ها خدمتگاران مردم اسرائیل شدند و قرار پیشنهاد رهبران آن ها چوب می شکستاندند و آب برای شان می آوردند.
20This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”
20یوشع مردم جِبعون را نزد خود خواسته پرسید: «چرا ما را فریب دادید و گفتید که از یک کشور دور آمده اید، در حالیکه در همینجا زندگی می کردید؟
21The princes said to them, “Let them live, so they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.”
21پس حالا به لعنت خدا گرفتار شده اید! و از این ببعد در غلامی بسر می برید. چوب می شکنید و سقاء خانۀ خدا می باشید.»
22Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?
22آن ها جواب دادند: «چون ما به یقین می دانستیم که خداوند، خدای شما به بندۀ خود موسی امر فرموده بود که تمام این سرزمین را به تو بدهد و تو همه باشندگان آنرا از بین بُبَری. بنابران، ما از جان خود ترسیدیم و این کار را کردیم.
23Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
23حالا سرنوشت ما به دست شما است. هر چه صلاح شما باشد در حق ما بکنید.»
24They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
24پس یوشع آن ها را از دست مردم اسرائیل نجات داده نگذاشت که کشته شوند.اما یوشع از همان روز آن ها را مأمور کرد که برای مردم چوب بشکنند و برای خانۀ خدا در هر جائیکه ساختمان آن را برای عبادت انتخاب کند، آب بیاورند.
25Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”
25اما یوشع از همان روز آن ها را مأمور کرد که برای مردم چوب بشکنند و برای خانۀ خدا در هر جائیکه ساختمان آن را برای عبادت انتخاب کند، آب بیاورند.
26He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.
27That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place which he should choose.
