¹Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

¹اینها اقوامی بودند که خداوند آن ها را برای آزمایش آن طبقه از مردم اسرائیل که در جنگ با کنعانیان تجربه ای نداشتند، بیرون نراند و آن ها را بحال شان گذاشت.

²only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing of it:

²و در عین حال خداوند می خواست که به این نسل جوان موقع بدهد تا فنون جنگی را یاد بگیرند و در جنگ مهارت پیدا کنند:

³the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

³پنج حکمران فلسطینی، تمام کنعانیان، سِیدونی ها و حویان که در کوههای لبنان ـ از بَعل حِرمون تا سرحد حمات ـ زندگی می کردند.

⁴They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the commandments of Yahweh, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

⁴آن ها در آنجا ماندند، تا معلوم شود که آیا قوم اسرائیل احکام خداوند را که بوسیلۀ موسی به پدران شان داده شده بودند، بجا می آورند یا نه.

⁵The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁵پس مردم اسرائیل در بین کنعانیان، حِتیان، اموریان، فِرزِیان، حویان و یبوسیان زندگی کردند.

⁶and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

⁶دختران شان را برای پسران خود گرفتند و دختران خود را به پسران آن ها دادند. و خدایان شان را پرستش کردند.

⁷The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

⁷باز مردم اسرائیل کارهائی کردند که در نظر خداوند زشت بود. خداوند، خدای خود را فراموش نمودند. خدایان بَعل و عَشتاروت را پرستیدند.

⁸Therefore the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

⁸بنابران، آتش خشم خداوند در مقابل قوم اسرائیل برافروخته شد. و خداوند آن ها را به دست کوشان رِشعَتایم، پادشاه بین النهرین مغلوب ساخت. و مردم اسرائیل مدت هشت سال خدمت کوشان رِشعَتایم را کردند.

⁹When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

⁹اما وقتی مردم اسرائیل پیش خداوند ناله و زاری نمودند، خداوند نجات دهنده ای برای شان فرستاد که عُتنِئیل پسر قناز برادر کوچک کالیب بود. و آن ها را نجات داد.

¹⁰The Spirit of Yahweh came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.

¹⁰روح خداوند بر او آمد، قوم اسرائیل را رهبری کرد و به جنگ رفت. با کمک خداوند، کوشان رِشعَتایم، پادشاهِ بین النهرین را شکست داد.

¹¹The land had rest forty years. Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹¹و در آن سرزمین مدت چهل سال آرامش برقرار بود و بعد عُتنِئیل پسر قناز فوت کرد.

¹²The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh.

¹²بار دیگر مردم اسرائیل کارهای زشتی کردند که خداوند را ناراضی ساختند. و خداوند به عِجلون، پادشاه موآب کمک کرد که آن ها را مغلوب سازد، زیرا در مقابل خداوند به کارهای بدی دست زدند.

¹³He gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.

¹³عِجلون با عمونیان و عمالَقه متحد شده اسرائیل را شکست دادند و شهر اریحا را تصرف کردند.

¹⁴The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁴و عِجلون پادشاه موآب مدت هجده سال بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

¹⁵But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁵وقتی مردم اسرائیل پیش خداوند زاری کردند، خداوند باز نجات دهنده ای برای شان فرستاد. نام او اِیهود، پسر جیرا، از قبیلۀ بنیامین و شخص چپ دستی بود. مردم اسرائیل هر سال به دست او برای عِجلون جزیه می فرستادند.

¹⁶Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.

¹⁶اِیهود برای خود یک خنجر دو دمه بطول پنجاه سانتی متر ساخت و آنرا در زیر لباس بالای ران راست خود پنهان نمود.

¹⁷He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁷بعد از آنکه جزیه را به عِجلون که یک آدم بسیار چاق بود تقدیم کرد،

¹⁸When he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute.

¹⁸آنهائی را که جزیه را حمل کرده بودند، واپس فرستاد.

¹⁹But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand to you, king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him went out from him.

¹⁹و خودش از معدن سنگ که در جِلجال بود برگشت. پیش عِجلون پادشاه آمد و گفت: «من یک پیام محرمانه برایت آورده ام.» پادشاه فوراً به کسانیکه در حضورش بودند امر کرد که بیرون بروند.

²⁰Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.

²⁰در آن وقت پادشاه در قصر تابستانی و در اطاق مخصوص خود نشسته بود. اِیهود به او نزدیک شد و گفت: «من پیامی از جانب خدا برایت آورده ام.» پادشاه از چوکی خود برخاست.

²¹Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

²¹آنگاه اِیهود با دست چپ خود خنجر را از زیر لباس کشید و به شکم او زد که دستۀ خنجر با تیغ آن در شکمش فرورفت و نوک آن از پشت او بیرون آمد، زیرا اِیهود خنجر را از شکم پادشاه بیرون نکشید.

²²and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

²²بعد اِیهود دروازه های خانه را قفل کرد و از راه دهلیز بالاخانه بیرون رفت.

²³Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.

²³پس از رفتن اِیهود وقتی خدمتگاران پادشاه آمدند و دیدند که دروازه بالاخانه قفل بود، فکر کردند که او به تشناب رفته است.

²⁴Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”

²⁴پس انتظار کشیدند. و چون انتظار شان طولانی شد و دروازه هم قفل بود، کلید را گرفته دروازه را باز کردند و دیدند که پادشاه شان مُرده بر زمین افتاده است.

²⁵They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

²⁵در وقتیکه خدمتگاران شاه انتظار می کشیدند، اِیهود از معدن سنگ گذشت و صحیح و سالم به سِعیرَت رسید.

²⁶Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirah.

²⁶و چون به کوهستان افرایم آمد شیپور را به صدا درآورد. و مردم اسرائیل از کوهستان با او رفتند و اِیهود رهبری آن ها را به عهده گرفت.

²⁷It happened, when he had come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them.

²⁷آنگاه به آن ها گفت: «بدنبال من بیائید، زیرا خداوند دشمنان تان، موآبیان را به دست شما داده است.» پس آن ها بدنبال او رفتند و گذرگاه های دریای اُردن را بروی مردم موآب بستند. به هیچ کس اجازۀ عبور ندادند.

²⁸He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.

²⁸آن ها ده هزار نفر از مردم موآب را که همه مردان نیرومند و جنگی بودند، بقتل رساندند و هیچ کسی نتوانست فرار کند.

²⁹They struck of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

²⁹به این ترتیب، موآبیان به دست مردم اسرائیل مغلوب شدند. و مردم آن سرزمین مدت هشت سال در آرامی بسر بردند.بعد از اِیهود داورِ دیگری بنام شَمجَر پسر عَنات روی کار آمد که ششصد نفر از فلسطینی ها را با یک چوب گاورانی کشت. او هم نجات دهندۀ قوم اسرائیل بود.

³⁰So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. The land had rest eighty years.

³⁰بعد از اِیهود داورِ دیگری بنام شَمجَر پسر عَنات روی کار آمد که ششصد نفر از فلسطینی ها را با یک چوب گاورانی کشت. او هم نجات دهندۀ قوم اسرائیل بود.

³¹After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck of the Philistines six hundred men with an oxgoad: and he also saved Israel.
